Bilateral Osteoarthritis of Coxofemoral Joint in a Thoroughbred Horse

        Hyohoon Jeong 한국임상수의학회 2018 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.35 No.5

A 3-year-old black Thoroughbred colt weighing 500 kg was admitted to the Equine Hospital of Korea RacingAuthority (KRA) due to the chronic gait abnormality of the hindlimbs. The history revealed that the patient had runand fallen onto the fence of the farm about at the age of 1 year old and the lameness had been worsening insidiouslysince the accident. The degree of lameness was 2/5 in accordance with the AAEP lameness grading system in bothhindlimbs at hand walking and trot. The lameness was exacerbated at lunging clockwise and counterclockwise onboth hindlimbs. The definitive diagnosis of the bilateral osteoarthritis of coxofemoral joint was established usingradiography under general inhalation anesthesia. The prognosis was considered to be poor with low expectancy forracing and the colt was expelled from the racecourse eventually. The clinicians are required to consider the possibilityof osteoarthritis of coxofemoral joint presented with chronic hindlimb lameness although it is rare. This is the firstreport on the bilateral osteoarthritis coxofemoral joint in Republic of Korea.

Neonatal Encephalopathy Complicated with Septic Arthritis in a Foal

        Hyohoon Jeong,Taeho Oh 한국임상수의학회 2018 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.35 No.5

A 2-day-old Thoroughbred foal weighing 58 kg was admitted to the Equine Hospital of Korea RacingAuthority (KRA) Jeju Stud Farm with clinical signs including loss of suckling behavior and barking. Neonatalencephalopathy (NE) was diagnosed based on history and typical clinical signs of NE. The foal seemed to recoverin 5 days of intensive care and treatment but then was complicated with the septic arthritis of left hock joint on the6th day of admission. A course of aggressive systemic antimicrobial therapy with joint lavage for 8 days was conductedand the foal was fully recovered and discharged. The follow up on the patient after 2 years revealed that the patientachieved a great success as a racehorse without any unexpected sequel. This report describes a course of NE complicatedwith septic arthritis in a foal and the clinical outcome of the intensive care and treatment in detail. To our knowledge, this is the first report which describes NE complicated with septic arthritis in a foal in Republic of Korea.

Intestinal Lymphoma in a Halla Horse

        Jeong, Hyohoon,Lee, Seyoung,Park, Kyung-won,Lee, Eun-bee,Kim, Jae-Hoon,Jung, Ji-Youl,Seo, Jong-pil The Korean Society of Veterinary Clinics 2022 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.39 No.3

A 21-year-old female Halla Horse weighing 248 kg was referred to the Jeju National University Equine Hospital with the chief complaint of anorexia accompanied by general weakness and depression for the previous three days suspected to be related to colic. Extensive diagnostic tests were performed for the following six days, including complete blood count (CBC), serum chemistry, gastroscopy, x-rays, and ultrasound imaging. The signalment, history, symptoms, and test results strongly suggested a chronic intestinal inflammatory disease with or without an alimentary tumor; hence, an exploratory laparotomy was performed. Almost the entire small intestine wall was severely thickened with diffuse ecchymosis on the serosa and protruded nodules on the mucosa. A presumptive diagnosis of an intestinal tumor was made, and the patient was euthanized, considering the patient's welfare with poor prognosis and low expectancy. A massive part of the small intestine was collected and submitted for macroscopic and microscopic pathology evaluations. The pathologic examination, including immunohistochemistry (IHC), indicated equine intestinal lymphoma showing strong positivity for T cell marker. This report describes the clinical signs, diagnosis and pathological features of intestinal lymphoma in a Halla Horse in detail.

Successful Treatment of Ulna Fracture in a Small Raptor

        Taeil kim,Hyohoon Jeong,Donghak Choi,Sungho Yun,Young-Sam Kwon 한국임상수의학회 2018 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.35 No.6

A wild Falco tinnunculus, which is a small raptor, was rescued and presented due to immobilization. Onphysical examination, a left ulnar fracture was detected, which was reduced with an intramedullary (IM) pin and softbandaging. Passive range of motion (PROM) exercises were then conducted to prevent complications such as ankylosis. The raptor was released into the wild four weeks postoperatively. We suggest that IM pinning with bandaging andappropriate PROM exercises may effectively treat ulnar fractures in small raptors.

Computed tomographic features of the temporomandibular joint in 10 Jeju horses

Lee, Seyoung,Lee, Eun-Bee,Park, Kyung-Won,Jeong, Hyohoon,Shin, Kwang-Yun,Kweon, Young-Park,Seo, Jong-pil The Korean Society of Veterinary Science 2022 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol. No.

Background: The equine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has a complex anatomical structure that makes diagnosis of TMJ disorders difficult. Computed tomography (CT) is now available in equine medicine; hence, TMJ evaluation has become more convenient. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to describe the CT features of the TMJ in Jeju horses and to compare these features with those of Thoroughbreds. Methods: In this report, the TMJs of 10 Jeju horses (mean age: 4.5 ± 1.9 yr; mean body weight: 282.6 ± 40.3 kg) and 6 Thoroughbreds (mean age: 7.3 ± 1.6 yr; mean body weight: 479.7 ± 44.0 kg) were examined using CT. After CT scanning, the Hounsfield units (HU) and height to width ratio (H:W) of the mandibular condyle were measured. Results: The mean H:W in Jeju horses was significantly lower than that in Thoroughbreds. The mean HU in Jeju horses was lower than that in Thoroughbreds; however, the difference was not significant. The most frequent CT finding was an irregular medial margin of the mandibular condyle in both breeds. Conclusions: In this study, the shape of the mandibular condyle in Jeju horses was flatter than that in Thoroughbreds. This report could be useful in evaluating the TMJ in Jeju horses. Moreover, CT could be a pragmatic choice for the examination of the TMJ in horses.

Small intestinal epiploic foramen entrapment in a seven-month pregnant Thoroughbred mare: a case report

        Hyebin Hwang,Seyoung Lee,Kyung-won Park,Eun-bee Lee,Tae-Young Kang,Jong-pil Seo,Hyohoon Jeong 대한수의학회 2023 大韓獸醫學會誌 Vol.63 No.2

A seven-month pregnant four-year-old Thoroughbred mare with colic weighing 600 kg was referred to the Jeju National University Equine Hospital. A physical examination and ultrasound suggested epiploic foramen entrapment. The patient underwent ileum resection and end-to-side jejunocecostomy. After surgery, the horse showed a consistent pain when introduced to feeding. A repeat laparotomy was performed to enlarge the stoma size with side-to-side jejunocecostomy. The repeat laparotomy was successful, and the mare gave birth uneventfully. This report describes a case of small intestinal epiploic foramen entrapment and the clinical outcomes of the 2 consecutive laparotomies a Thoroughbred mare in late gestation.
