Consumer Engagement and Sponsorship Effectiveness: Finding Flow in Sport

Consumer engagement concerns the quality (or strength) of the psychological connection with sport properties (or sponsors) perceived by the consumer, which is a valuable asset to sponsored property’s and sponsor’s brand equity and a key determinant of sponsorship effectiveness. In this study, we focus on the phenomenon of ‘flow’ (i.e., state of intense momentary engagement) as an important indicator of consumer engagement and examine the phenomenon’s influence on sponsorship effectiveness. A pre-post survey-based study was conducted to test whether the experience of flow influences the consumer’s attitude and behavioral intention towards the sponsor before and after the sponsorship exposure through a major sporting event. The results showed significant moderating effect of flow, suggesting emphasis on flow as a key indicator of consumer engagement and a key construct explaining sponsorship effectiveness.

The dorsal metacarpal artery perforator flap is a flap that rises from the hand dorsum. Owing to its reliability and versatility, this flap is used as a workhorse for finger defect. However, to cover the radial-volar defect of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) of the index finger, a longer flap is required than before. Here, we introduce the oblique extended reverse first dorsal metacarpal artery (FDMA) perforator flap to cover the radial-volar aspect defect of the index finger. A 45-year-old man got injured to the radial-volar defect of PIPJ of the left index finger caused by thermal press machine. The wound was 21 cm in size, and the joint and bone were exposed. We used FDMA perforator from anastomosis with palmar metacarpal artery at metacarpal neck. Since the defect was extended to the volar side, the flap was elevated by oblique extension to the fourth metacarpal base level. The fascia was included to the flap, and the flap was rotated counterclockwise. Finally, PIPJ was fully covered by the flap. Donor site was primarily closed. After 12 months of operation, the flap was stable without complication and limitation of range of motion. The oblique extended reverse FDMA perforator flap is a reliable method for covering the radial-volar defect of the PIPJ of the index finger. This flap, which also has an aesthetic advantage, will be a good choice for hand surgeons who want to cover the PIPJ defect of the index finger using a nonmicrosurgical option.
Novel surgical use of electrosurgical tip cleaners in subdermal excision for axillary osmidrosis

Background Axillary osmidrosis is a disease characterized by axillary malodor. The conventional treatment method of subdermal excision uses Metzenbaum scissors. Recently, subdermal excision using the Versajet system was introduced. However, it is an expensive surgical tool, and a recent study demonstrated a higher frequency of axillary skin necrosis with the Versajet. We propose a novel, cost-effective, and safe subdermal excision method that utilizes an electrosurgical tip cleaner (ETC). Methods Our retrospective cohort study included 27 patients who underwent subdermal excision from June 2012 to November 2021. The patients were classified into three groups according to the surgical method: Metzenbaum scissors, Versajet, and ETC. The operation time, hospitalization cost, and postoperative complications were investigated. Results The number of patients in the Metzenbaum scissors, Versajet, and ETC groups was seven, eleven, and nine, respectively. The mean operation time and hospitalization cost were significantly different among the three groups (P<0.05). The longest mean operation time was observed in the Metzenbaum scissors group (112.9±23.6 minutes), followed by the ETC and Versajet groups (76.4±27.1 and 64.2±24.8 minutes, respectively). The most expensive method was the Versajet ($2,346.1±517.7), followed by the ETC and Metzenbaum scissors ($1,391.8±317.7 and $1,279.6±287.5, respectively). No postoperative complications were observed. Conclusions The ETC is a novel method of subdermal excision, comparable to Metzenbaum scissors or Versajet. Therefore, it is recommended for situations where it is necessary to consider both the time and cost of surgery.
Branding a Nation with Sport: The Importance of Collaborative Strategies

Sport (e.g., mega event, athlete, traditional sport, facility) can be an effective tool for nation branding. Nation branding with sport is a complex process with multiple organizations involved (e.g., National Olympic Committee, Organizing Committee, Ministry of Sport). With focus on collaborative relations and the case of Korea, this study explores the branding strategies of key organizations involved in promoting a nation’s brand through sport and investigates the current and ideal collaborative relations among the organizations with document analysis, interviews, and a simplified MACTOR analysis. Based on the findings, suggestions are made for better utilization of sport in nation branding and for developing collaborative strategies.
Surgical Approach to Necrotizing Fasciitis in the Buccal Fat Pad

Cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) of the face is a rare and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that requires immediate intervention. CNF involving the buccal fat pad particularly demands surgical drainage, with attention to the surrounding anatomical structures to prevent vascular or nerve damage. In this study, we reviewed the anatomy of buccal fat pads to suggest appropriate surgical approaches. A retrospective chart review was conducted on seven patients with CNF who had a buccal fat pad abscess requiring surgical incision and drainage between January 2022 and August 2023. Abscesses within the central buccal fat pad and its pterygoid extensions were drained via intraoral incisions. Abscesses in the temporal extension were addressed by the Dingman approach. All patients underwent our surgical drainage regimen combined with proper intravenous antibiotics, leading to successful treatment of CNF without significant functional sequelae, with an average stay of 18.71 days. The buccal fat pad, which corresponds to the deep space of the face, is surrounded by vital structures such as the facial artery, vein, nerve, and parotid duct. When treating abscesses in the buccal fat pad, it is important to understand the relationship of the fat pad to other vital structures for optimal outcomes.
Anomalous extinction in index-matched terahertz nanogaps

<P>Slot-type nanogaps have been widely utilized in transmission geometry because of their advantages of exclusive light funneling and exact quantification of near-field enhancement at the gap. For further application of the nanogaps in electromagnetic interactions with various target materials, complementary studies on both transmission and reflection properties of the nanogaps are necessary. Here, we observe an anomalous extinction of terahertz waves interacting with rectangular ring-shaped sub-30 nm wide gaps. Substrate works as an index matching layer for the nanogaps, leading to a stronger field enhancement and increased nonlinearity at the gap under substrate-side illumination. This effect is expressed in reflection as a larger dip at the resonance, caused by destructive interference of the diffracted field from the gap with the reflected beam from the metal. The resulting extinction at the resonance is larger than 60% of the incident power, even without any absorbing material in the whole nanogap structure. The extinction even decreases in the presence of an absorbing medium on top of the nanogaps, suggesting that transmission and reflection from nanogaps might not necessarily represent the absorption of the whole structure.</P>
