Effect of TiO2 nanotubes arrays on osseointegration of orthodontic miniscrew.

        Jang, Insan,Shim, Seong-Cheol,Choi, Dong-Soon,Cha, Bong-Kuen,Lee, Jae-Kwan,Choe, Byung-Hak,Choi, Won-Youl Kluwer Academic Publishers 2015 BIOMEDICAL MICRODEVICES Vol.17 No.4

To increase the stability of orthodontic miniscrews, TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated on the surface of Ti miniscrews and the effect of those arrays on the osseointegration of miniscrews was evaluated. Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays were grown on the surface of orthodontic miniscrews. Ethylene glycol based electrolyte was used in the anodic oxidation process. Two-step anodic oxidation was conducted to obtain clean and open windows in TiO2 nanotube arrays. The diameter and length of the TiO2 nanotube arrays were ~ 70 nm and ~ 5 μm, respectively. The miniscrews with TiO2 nanotube arrays were implanted in the legs of New Zealand white rabbits for 8 weeks. Histological osseointegration was assessed by bone-to-implant contact ratio, and three-dimensional bone volume ratio was measured by micro-computed tomography analysis. The miniscrews with TiO2 nanotube arrays had a greater mean bone-to-implant contact ratio of 52.8 % than the control, 29.3 %. Mean bone volume ratio (BV/TV) was also higher in the miniscrews with TiO2 nanotube arrays, at 81.2 % than those in the control via micro-CT analysis. Our findings support that TiO2 nanotube arrays on the surface of miniscrews enhance osseointegration and improve the stability of the miniscrew.

Chewing performance in orthodontic patients treated with extraction of premolars

Insan Jang,Eunhye Jang,Dong-Soon Choi,Bong-Kuen Cha 조선대학교 치의학연구원 2019 Oral Biology Research (Oral Biol Res) Vol.43 No.3

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the kinematic parameters of the chewing cycles in patients who had undergone comprehensive orthodontic treatment with extraction of premolars and to compare these parameters with those of a non-extraction group. The samples for this retrospective study consisted of kinesiographic recordings obtained from patients who had undergone comprehensive orthodontic treatment without orthognathic surgery. They were divided into a non-extraction group (n=19) and an extraction group (n=40) depending on whether their premolars were extracted for orthodontic treatment. Mandibular kinesiography was recorded using Bio-EGN before (T1) and after (T2) the treatment, and chewing cycle time, velocity, the position of turning point, and the lateral width of the cycle were measured. No significant difference was found in most of the kinematic parameters between the extraction and non-extraction groups at T1 and in those between T1 and T2 in the non-extraction group. In the extraction group, on the other hand, opening and closing velocities significantly decreased and the turning point of the chewing cycle was significantly more superior at T2 than at T1. The chewing cycle time did not significantly differ between T1 and T2 in the extraction group. Patients who have undergone orthodontic treatment with premolar extraction have chewing cycles that are shorter and slower than those before the treatment, and their chewing movement may differ from that of those who have not undergone extraction.

Vol.55 No.9

Objective: To compare the electromyographic activity of masseter and temporal muscles between bruxers and nonbruxers in adult and adolescent patients. Material and Methods: The samples composed of the surface electromyography (EMG) recordings obtained from the orthodontic patients. Sixty-eight patients who had bruxsim habit (43 female and 25 male) were divided into four groups according to their age and gender. Control groups consisted of 79 patients who had not bruxism habit. EMG of the masseter muscle and anterior temporal muscle were recorded before treatment in clenching at maximum intercuspation. The ratio of temporal and masseter muscle activity (T/M ratio) was compared between bruxers and nonbruxers in adult and adolescent patients. Results: EMG of masseter muscle and temporal muscle were significantly higher in adult male bruxism group than control. T/M ratio in adult male bruxism group was significantly lower than in adult male nonbruxism group. However, there was no significant difference in T/M ratio between adolescent bruxism group and adolescent nonbruxism group. Conclusions: The balance in the activity of the masseter and temporal muscles may not differ between bruxers and nonbruxers during adolescent periods. However, in adult period, the masseter muscle activity against temporal muscle is greater in males with bruxism habit compared to non-bruxer.

This case report describes the treatment of an inversely impacted maxillary first premolar in a 12.6-year-old girl by autotransplantaion and comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Four months after surgery, brackets were placed, and orthodontic force was applied. After orthodontic treatment, the transplanted premolar showed favorable stability and occlusion with a little short root length. This case demonstrates a successful treatment modality for an inversely impacted premolar with prolonged retention of a primary molar.

We propose Femto-cell power control scheme in HeNet with Game Theory. The Femto-cell which provide high quality with low power is issued by many benefits, however there is a bunch of interferences when many Femto-cells use overlapped bandwidth with Macro-cell. We defined base station of cellular networks and mobile users as players of Game Theory, and configured interference effect among each other as power utility function. Futhermore, we showed enhanced overall system performance, lower power usage and interference decrease by using optimal power.

Vol.26 No.2

Solitary median maxillary central incisor (SMMCI) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the absence of one of the maxillary central incisors, with the remaining incisor positioned centrally in the midline. While SMMCI can manifest independently, it can also be associated with holoprosencephaly, a condition resulting from incomplete or failed separation of the cerebral hemispheres. A 14.9-year-old female patient presented with a congenital absence of one maxillary central incisor and an anterior overjet of 14.3 mm. She was diagnosed with Class II division 1 malocclusion with SMMCI. The treatment approach included the extraction of the SMMCI and orthodontic treatment using the fixed orthodontic appliances. Following the orthodontic treatment, there was a notable enhancement in anterior occlusion and aesthetics, with proper space distribution for restorative procedures in the maxillary anterior region.

      • Functional evaluation of orthopedic and orthodontic treatment in a patient with unilateral posterior crossbite and facial asymmetry

Vol.44 No.3

An 8-years old boy with facial asymmetry and unilateral posterior crossbite on the left side received orthopedic and orthodontic treatment. During the first phase of treatment, the narrow maxillary arch was expanded using an acrylic plate. Then, the acrylic plate was used as a bite block with occlusal indentations from the construction bite that was obtained with the incisors in a coincident dental midline. After the position of the mandible was stabilized, the second phase of orthodontic treatment was initiated using fixed appliances for detailing of the occlusion. Skeletal symmetry, ideal occlusion, and coincident dental midlines were thus achieved. Functionally, occlusal force balance and masticatory muscle activity were improved, and the chewing patterns were normalized.

Application of the foramina of the trigeminal nerve as landmarks for analysis of craniofacial morphology

Vol.49 No.5

Objective: The objective of this study was to develop new parameters based on the foramina of the trigeminal nerve and to compare them with the conventional cephalometric parameters in different facial skeletal types. Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and cephalograms from 147 adult patients (57 males and 90 females; mean age, 26.1 years) were categorized as Class I (1o < ANB < 3o), Class II (ANB > 5o), and Class III (ANB < –1o). Seven foramina in the craniofacial area—foramen rotundum (Rot), foramen ovale (Ov), infraorbital foramen, greater palatine foramen, incisive foramen (IF), mandibular foramen (MDF), and mental foramen (MTF)—were identified in the CBCT images. Various linear, angular, and ratio parameters were compared between the groups by using the foramina, and the relationship between the new parameters and the conventional cephalometric parameters was assessed. Results: The distances between the foramina in the cranial base did not differ among the three groups. However, the Rot-IF length was shorter in female Class III patients, while the Ov-MTF length, MDF-MTF length, and Ov-MDF length were shorter in Class II patients than in Class III patients of both sexes. The MDF-MTF/FH plane angle was larger in Class II patients than in Class III patients of both sexes. Most parameters showed moderate to high correlations, but the Ov-MDF-MTF angle showed a relatively low correlation with the gonial angle. Conclusions: The foramina of the trigeminal nerve can be used to supplement assessments based on the conventional skeletal landmarks on CBCT images.

Positional change of the condyle after orthodontic-orthognathic surgical treatment: is there a relationship to skeletal relapse?

Vol.40 No.4

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the condylar position in relation to the glenoid fossa before and after orthodontic-orthognathic surgical treatment and to investigate the relationship with skeletal relapse. Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalograms and temporomandibular joint tomograms from 19 patients with mandibular prognathism who received orthodontic-orthognathic surgery were included in this study. Samples were divided into two groups based on skeletal change during the retention period. The relapse group consisted of 7 patients (3 females and 4 males; mean age, 21.9 years) whose pogonion or menton displaced more than 1 mm during the retention period and the stable group consisted of 12 patients (5 females and 7 males; mean age, 21.7 years). Anterior joint space, posterior joint space, superior joint space, and anteroposterior index were measured on tomograms at pretreatment and posttreatment timepoints. Condyle position and frequency of the positional change were compared between both groups. Results: In the relapse group and stable group, 42.9% and 45.8% of the condyles, respectively, showed forward or backward displacement at posttreatment. However, the changes were small and the mean anterior, posterior, superior joint spaces and frequencies of the positional changes did not differ statistically between both groups. Conclusion: Our results suggest that small positional changes of the condyle, which may occur after orthodontic-orthognathic surgery treatment, may not be related to skeletal relapse after removal of the orthodontic appliances.
