In order to control glucose concentration during fed-batch culture for antibiotic production, we applied so called “software sensor” which estimates unmeasured variable of interest from measured process variables using software. All data for analysis were collected from industrial scale cultures in a pharmaceutical company. First, we constructed an estimation model for glucose feed rate to keep glucose concentration at target value. In actual fed-batch culture, glucose concentration was kept at relatively high and measured once a day, and the glucose feed rate until the next measurement time was determined by an expert worker based on the actual consumption rate. Fuzzy neural network (FNN) was applied to construct the estimation model. From the simulation results using this model, the average error for glucose concentration was 0.88 g/L. The FNN model was also applied for a special culture to keep glucose concentration at low level. Selecting the optimal input variables, it was possible to simulate the culture with a low glucose concentration from the data sets of relatively high glucose concentration. Next, a simulation model to estimate time course of glucose concentration during one day was constructed using the on-line measurable process variables, since glucose concentration was only measured off-line once a day. Here, the recursive fuzzy neural network (RFNN) was applied for the simulation model. As the result of the simulation, average error of RFNN model was 0.91 g/L and this model was found to be useful to supervise the fed-batch culture.
AKARI IRC INFRARED 2.5-5 ㎛ SPECTROSCOPY OF NEARBY LUMINOUS INFRARED GALAXIES

We present the result of systematic AKARI IRC infrared $2.5-5{\mu}m$ spectroscopy of >100 nearby luminous infrared galaxies, to investigate the energetic roles of starbursts and optically-elusive buried AGNs. Based on (1) the equivalent widths of the $3.3{\mu}m$ PAH emission features, (2) the optical depths of absorption features, and (3) continuum slopes, we can disentangle emission from starbursts and AGNs. We find that the energetic importance of buried AGNs increases with increasing galaxy infrared luminosities, suggesting that the AGN-starburst connections (and thereby possible AGN feedback to host galaxies) are luminosity dependent.

Enterococcus faecium, especially those showing multidrug resistance, has emerged as a significant cause of healthcare-associated infections worldwide. However, relatively little is known about the virulence and pathogenesis of this species. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of four putative virulence determinants of E. faecium and to correlate them with phenotypic traits. Using forty E. faecium vanA-type isolates from hospitalized patients and their environmental vicinity, we determined the following: the antimicrobial susceptibility profile, occurrence of the genes cylA, efaA, esp, and gelE, hemolytic and gelatinase activities, capacity to form biofilm and in vitro adhesion to epithelial cells. All isolates were shown to be resistant to vancomycin and teicoplanin, as well as to two or more other antimicrobials. All isolates harbored at least one putative virulence marker, and the prevalence was as follows: esp, 87.5%; efaA, 82.5%; gelE, 70%;and cylA, 65%. The presence of 4 genes was observed in 32.5% isolates. The presence of the efaA was associated with the presence of esp, regardless of the source of the isolates. A positive association with the presence of cylA and hemolytic activity in the sheep blood agar assay was observed. No association was found for gelE and gelatinase production in the agar plate assay, for efaA and LLC-MK2 cell adhesion, and for esp and biofilm formation on polystyrene surface. These results show the presence of putative virulence genes in multiple antimicrobial resistant E. faecium isolates from different sources in a hospital setting.
