Early detection and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is important. The current treatment for early AD is acetylcholine esterase inhibitors (AChEIs); however, the efficacy is poor. Besides, AChEI did not show efficacy in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Beta-amyloid (A) deposits have been regarded to be highly related to the pathogenesis of AD. However, many clinical trials aiming at the clearance of A deposits failed to improve the cognitive decline of AD, even at its early phase. There should be other important mechanisms unproven in the course of AD and MCI. Feasible biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment response of AD are lacking to date. The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) activation plays an important role in learning and memory. On the other hand, oxidative stress has been regarded to contribute to aging with the assumption that free radicals damage cell constituents and connective tissues. Our recent study found that an NMDAR enhancer, sodium benzoate (the pivotal inhibitor of D-amino acid oxidase [DAAO]), improved the cognitive and global function of patients with early-phase AD. Further, we found that peripheral DAAO levels were higher in patients with MCI and AD than healthy controls. We also found that sodium benzoate was able to change the activity of antioxidant. These pieces of evidence suggest that the NMDAR function is associated with anti-oxidation, and have potential to be biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment response of AD.

Carrier injection and charge loss characteristics of nonvolatile memories with chemically-synthesized (CS) and vacuum-deposited (VD) gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) have been investigated. Compared to CS counterparts, the memories with VD Au-NPs exhibit a higher dot density of 3.77 × 1011 cm-2, leading to a larger memory window. Further, the energy from valence-band edge to vacuum level (EVB_vac) of tunneling oxide for the samples with CS and VD Au-NPs is found to be 9.04 and 9.85 eV respectively. The small EVB_vac value of the memories with CS Au-NPs is resulted from the formation of a thin chemical oxide (SiOx) on thermally-grown SiO2 tunneling layer during the chemically synthesized process, contributing to a slow erasing behavior. Besides, the programming of the memories with VD Au-NPs is saturated at high gate bias, which has been well-explained by the electrons induced potential coupling between Au-NPs. Superior data retention property and high temperature dependence of charge loss are observed for the memories with CS Au-NPs, which can be ascribed to the thick tunneling oxide layer by the additional SiOx film.
Three methods for studying coupled vibration in a multi flexible disk rotor system

This paper improved and developed Shaft-disk-blade (SDB) rotor system based on the previous studies of the authors in the last decade from Yang and Huang (2005) to Chiu et al. (2017). This paper also explored blade-bending, disk-transverse, and shaft-torsion coupling vibration of a multi flexible disk rotor system. Unlike the previous studies of the authors, this paper adopted three methods: (a) Assumed mode method (AMM), (b) Finite element method (FEM), and (c) experimental method. The first approach is the main method, and the two other methods are complementary. Results generated from the three methods were then compared and analyzed. Based on the previous definition of the authors, a flexible disk rotor system displays three types of coupling vibrations: Inter-blade, SDB, and diskblade modes. The system changes the rules of natural frequencies and mode shapes. This paper presents several interesting results. First, the author determined the change rules of the mode shapes and natural frequencies using the AMM, FEM (including three kinds of software), and the experimental method. Second, numerical calculation results also revealed that two phenomena regarding the distance of disk and flexible disk would be affected by the natural frequencies. Third, the experimental results would be explored in this paper. Last, the flexible disk could affect the system instability in the case study of rotation effects.
