        한국어 초성 비음의 인식 자질

        본 연구는 비음과 모음 연결구간이 한국어 비자음을 인식하는데 기여하는 역할에 대해 연구하였다. 긴 비음 [ㄴ]과 짧은 비음 [ㄴ], 그리고 모음 [우]/[아]가 사용된 자연발화를 이용하여 세가지 타입(비성자질, 모음연결구간, 전체음절)의 음성테스트 시료를 만들었다. 실험결과에 따르면, 긴 비성자질과는 달리 짧은 비성자질은 비자음으로 인식되는 자질로는 약하다는 사실이 발견되었다. 짧은 비성자질은 폐쇄음으로 인식되기도 했다. 반면에, 긴 비성자질 뒤의 모음 [아]보다는 짧은 비성자질 뒤의 모음 [아]에서 비자음 [ㄴ]이 더 많이 인식되었다. 우리는 이런 현상이 비성자질과 연결모음구간의 상대적 돋들림에 의한 상호 보완작용 때문이라고 주장한다. 또한 이 논문은 [아] 모음 연결구간이 [우] 모음 연결구간과는 다른 인식결과를 도출하였다는 것을 보여주었다. 앞으로의 연구에서는 한국어의 다양한 비음과 모음과의 결합을 연구하려고 한다. This study investigated the role of the nasal murmur and vowel transitions as perceptual cues for Korean nasals. Three types of stimuli (murmur, vowel transition, and whole syllable) were generated from natural utterances of [n] with long vs. short murmur plus [u]/[a]. The results of the identification test showed that unlike the long murmur, the short murmur provides a weak perceptual cue for nasality. The short murmur could lead to the perception of nasals as voiced plosives. In contrast, more correct nasals responses were induced from the vowel [a] following the short murmur type rather than from the vowel [a] following the long murmur type. We suggest that there is the reciprocal relationship in perception between the relative salience of murmur and vowel transition. In this paper, we also showed that transition to vowel /a/ induced different perceptual results from transition to vowel /u/ did. In the future study, we will investigate a wide variety of nasals and the following vowel types to understand the full spectrum of the nasal-vowel sequence in Korean.

        Cross-generational Change of /o/ and /u/ in Seoul Korean Ⅱ

        This is a follow-up study on Han and Kang (2013) which argued that the Euclidean distances between /o/ and /u/ in Seoul Korean decreased in the first syllable position as speakers were among younger female speakers but not for male speakers, whereas in the second syllable position both gender groups showed a cross-generational decreasing effect of the Euclidean distance between /o/ and /u/. This study normalized the same data in Han and Kang (2013) which measured 12 speakers (six males and six females) for each Age group and investigated the spectral changes vowels /o/ and /u/ between age and gender, using the log-mean normalized statistical results. This study also examined overlap fraction values generated in SOAM 2D (F1 x F2) (cf. Wassink, 2006), which may also indicate the proximity of two vowels in question. The results showed that /o/ and /u/ vowels were making closer with /o/ raising for female speakers in V₁ and V₂ positions but only in the V₂ position for male speakers. That is, females led the upward movement of peripheral /o/ vowel, just like the raising of ‘e’ and ‘o’ in New York City (Labov, 1991). The results also showed that younger speakers used a rather narrow vowel space for the vowels. This also contributed to the proximity of the vowels /o/ and /u/, resulting in rather large overlap fraction values for younger speakers between these two vowels.

        Cross-generational Change of /o/ and /u/ in Seoul Korean Ⅰ

        This study examined cross-generational changes in the vowel system of Seoul Korean. Acoustic analyses of the vowel formants of /o/ and /u/, and their Euclidean distances in the vowel space were undertaken to explore an on-going merger of these two vowels as proposed in previous acoustic studies and a phonological analysis by Chae (1999). A robust cross-generational change of /o/ and /u/ was found, more evident for female speakers than for male speakers. For female speakers, with each successive generation, /o/ became increasingly approximated with /u/, regardless of the syllable positions that the target vowels were posited, whereas the cross-generational differences in the Euclidean distances were only shown in the second syllable position for the male speakers. These results demonstrate that 1) women are more advanced than men in the on-going approximation of /o/ and /u/; 2) the approximation of /o/ and /u/ is common in the non-initial position. Taken together, the merger of /o/ and /u/ appears to be in progress in Seoul Korean.

        대학 PBL 수업 활성화 전략 탐색: A대학교의 사례를 중심으로

        대학교육은 급격한 사회 변화를 따라가지 못하고, 사회를 필요한 인재를 양성해내지 못한다는 비판에 직면해있다. 이에 교수자 중심, 강의식 수업을 벗어나 학습자 중심의 구성주의적 학습으로의 패러다임 전환이 요구되는 상황이다. PBL은 이러한 변화에 부응하는 대표적인 교수학습 방법으로서 여러 대학에서 전략적으로 확산되고 있다. 그런데 정작 PBL로 수업을 해야 하는 교수들은 PBL에 대해 잘 알지 못하거나, PBL이란 교수학습 방법을 통해 어떻게 수업을 해야 할지 막막한 경우가 많다. 이에 본 연구는 PBL 수업이 잘 정착되었다고 인정받는 A대학교에 대한 사례연구를 통해 대학교육에서 PBL수업 활성화 전략을 도출하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 A대학교에서 진행 중인 8개 PBL 수업에 대한 참여관찰, 교수 8명 및 학생 14명 대상으로 한 심층면담 등을 진행하고 그 결과를 질적연구를 통해 분석하였다. 그 결과 수업의 초반-중반-후반에 걸쳐 3개의 상위 범주 및 7개의 하위 범주를 도출하였다. 이를 통해 PBL 수업에서 적용해야 할 활성화 전략은 첫째 수업 방향의 분명한 제시, 둘째 학생 잠재력에 대한 신뢰, 셋째 도전적 과제를 통한 열정 자극, 넷째 학습자 참여 방안 구축, 다섯째 학생 고유의 관점 제시와 독려, 여섯째 결과물에 대한 발표 기회 부여, 일곱째 학습을 통한 성취감 획득 등이 필요했다. 본 연구를 통해 PBL 수업과 관련된 대학교육혁신 관계자와 교수자 등이 PBL에 대한 불필요한 오해를 걷어내고 실제로 질높은 수업을 구현하기 위한 방법을 찾아가는데 의미있는 시사점을 찾을 수 있기를 기대한다. University education is facing criticism that it cannot keep up with rapid social changes and train outstanding individuals that are needed for society. Therefore, it is necessary to change the paradigm from instructor-centered and lecture-based classes to learner-centered constructive learning. PBL is a typical teaching and learning method that meets these changes and is spreading strategically in various universities. However, professors who have to teach with PBL often do not know about PBL or how to teach through PBL. This study aims to derive activation strategies for PBL classes in university education through case studies on A University, which is recognized as well settled for PBL classes. For this purpose, the participants were observed in 8 PBL classes in A University, and in-depth interviews with 8 professors and 14 students were conducted and the results were analyzed through qualitative research. As a result, three upper categories and seven lower categories were derived from the early, middle, and late stages of the class. The activation strategies to be applied in PBL class were (1) clear presentation of direction, (2) confidence in student potential, (3) stimulation of passion through challenging tasks, (4) establishment of learner participation plan, (5) presentation and encouragement of student's unique viewpoint, (6) presentation opportunity, and (7) acquisition of achievement through learning. Through this study, it is expected that university education innovation officials and professors related to PBL class will find meaningful implications for finding out ways to realize high quality class by eliminating unnecessary misconceptions about PBL.

        편지글 읽기에 나타난 한국어 모음 /오/-/우/의 세대간 차이

        This study is a follow-up study of Han and Kang (2013) and Kang and Han (2013) which examined cross-generational changes in the Korean vowels /o/ and /u/ using acoustic analyses of the vowel formants of these two vowels, their Euclidean distances and the overlap fraction values generated in SOAM 2D (Wassink, 2006). Their results showed an on-going approximation of /o/ and /u/, more evident in female speakers and non-initial vowels. However, these studies employed non-words in a frame sentence. To see the extent to which these two vowels are merged in real words in spontaneous speech, we conducted an acoustic analysis of the formants of /o/ and /u/ produced by two age groups of female speakers while reading a letter sample. The results demonstrate that 1) the younger speakers employed mostly F2 but not F1 differences in the production of /o/ and /u/; 2) the Euclidean distance of these two vowels was shorter in non-initial than initial position, but there was no difference in Euclidean distance between the two age groups (20’s vs. 40-50’s); 3) overall, /o/ and /u/ were more overlapped in non-initial than initial position, but in non-initial position, younger speakers showed more congested distribution of the vowels than in older speakers.

        Towards a Functional Account of Case Marker Reduction and Coda Neutralization in Korean

        In this paper, we argue that principles on language's communicative function can uniformly account for various form reduction phenomena in syntax and phonology. Focusing on the case marker reduction and coda neutralization in Korean, we claim that deletion or neutralization is basically triggered by the economy principle of production (Minimize Effort), but monosyllabic elements are exempted from these reduction phenomena because reduction phenomena are also heavily restricted by the optimal principle of recognition (Maximize Information). Based on these functional approaches using two antagonistic functional principles, some ellipsis phenomena in Korean and English are also revisited.
