        Redesigning Taguchi Sensor

        The configuration of the main components and the physical structure of the Taguchi sensor, the first ceramic gas sensor mass produced, has remained virtually unaltered since its appearance 40 years ago. This device owns an excellent combination of the quality factors but is non-selective. The research efforts carried out to enhance the selectivity in this resistive gas sensor are briefly reviewed. A novel design, Capillary-attached Gas Sensor (CGS), is introduced, which employs the same ceramic components used for the fabrication of a classical Taguchi sensor but in altered geometries. CGS presents remarkable advantages from the view point of selectivity over the original design. While the steady state response of a CGS has the same significance as that of the Taguchi sensor, its transient response presents valuable diagnostic information. Fabrication and test of a prototype CGS is reported.

        A New AC/DC Converter for the Interconnections between Wind Farms and HVDC Transmission Lines

        In this paper, a new ac/dc converter is proposed for HVDC-connected wind farms. The proposed converter provides a suitable dc voltage for HVDC transmission systems. Each wind turbine is connected to two full bridge diode rectifiers. These rectifiers are connected to each other by three thyristors. Firing the thyristors at desired angles provides an adjustable dc voltage in the output of the converter. Simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed converter.

        Protective and Therapeutic Effects of Aloe Vera Gel on Ulcerative Colitis Induced by Acetic Acid in Rats

        Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic intestinal inflammation. Common clinical symptoms are weight loss, diarrhea, ulcers, and inflammation. Aloe vera (AV) has several medicinal properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory analgesic, and improvement of gastric and skin ulcers. This study aimed to investigate the protective and therapeutic effects of AV gel on acetic acid-induced UC in rats. UC was induced in 48 rats by injection of 4% acetic acid into the rectum. Protective and treatment groups received treatments 7 days before and after the induction of colitis, respectively. The negative control group, the positive control group, and AV groups received distilled water, sulfasalazine, and 50 and 300 mg/kg of gel extract, respectively. Water and food intake and body weight changes were recorded. The extent of the mucosal ulcers, colon tissue thickening, and mucosal bleeding were scored by the Gerald classification system score (microscopy observations). Slides of tissues were prepared for pathologic assay using the modified Wallace method (macroscopic observations). The results of the macroscopic and microscopic examination showed protective and therapeutic effects of 50 mg/kg dose of AV on acetic acid-induced colitis in rats which reduces the inflammation, ulcers and tissue damage compared with negative control (p < 0.05). There were no significant changes in the amount of water and food intake, body weight changes, and colon weight in protective and treatment groups. Based on the results, AV gel could be used to improve the symptoms of UC, as well as prevent people who are susceptible to the UC.

        Association of Dietary Patterns with Visceral Adiposity, Lipid Accumulation Product, and Triglyceride-Glucose Index in Iranian Adults

        In the present study, we sought to examine the association between dietary patterns (DPs) and visceral adiposity, lipid accumulation product (LAP), and triglyceride-glucose index. This cross-sectional study was conducted on adults aged between 18-45 years old who lived in Tehran, Iran, between February 2017 and December 2018 (n = 270). DPs were derived using principal component analysis. We used analysis of variance to examine differences in continues variables across tertiles of major DPs. Subsequently, for the modeling of these relationships, and also considering the possible effect of the confounding factors, multivariate regression was used. Three DPs were identified: healthy pattern, mixed pattern, and western pattern, respectively. Compared with individuals in the lowest category of mixed pattern, those in the highest category had lower fasting blood sugar (96.26 ± 11.57 vs. 101 ± 28.66, p = 0.01). A significant association was found between healthy pattern, after adjustment for potential confounders, and odds of LAP; such that individuals in the top category of healthy pattern score were 71% less likely to have a high LAP compared with those in the lowest category (odds ratio, 0.29; 95% confidence interval, 0.10-0.81). We found that adherence to a healthy DP was associated with decreased LAP. To confirm the veracity of these findings, more studies should be conducted.

        In vitro and in vivo evaluation of the mechanisms of citalopraminduced hepatotoxicity

        Even though citalopram is commonly used inpsychiatry, there are several reports on its toxic effects. So,the current study was designed to elucidate the mechanismsof cytotoxic effects of in vitro and in vivo citalopramtreatment on liver and the following cytolethal events. Forin vitro experiments, freshly isolated rat hepatocytes wereexposed to citalopram along with/without various agents. To do in vivo studies liver function enzyme assays andhistological examination were performed. In the in vitroexperiments, citalopram (500 lM) exposure demonstratedcell death, a marked elevation in ROS formation, mitochondrialpotential collapse, lysosomal membrane leakiness,glutathione (GSH) depletion and lipid peroxidation. In vivo biochemistry panel assays for liver enzymesfunction (AST, ALT and GGTP) and histological examinationconfirmed citalopram (20 mg/kg)-induced damage. citalopram-induced oxidative stress cytotoxicity markerswere significantly prevented by antioxidants, ROS scavengers,MPT pore sealing agents, endocytosis inhibitors,ATP generators and CYP inhibitors. Either enzymeinduction or GSH depletion were concomitant with augmentedcitalopram-induced damage both in vivo andin vitro which were considerably ameliorated withantioxidants and CYP inhibitors. In conclusion, it is suggestedthat citalopram hepatotoxicity might be a result ofoxidative hazard leading to mitochondrial/lysosomal toxicconnection and disorders in biochemical markers whichwere supported by histomorphological studies.

      • Sleep Quality and Associated Risk Factors in Leukemia Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy in Iran

        This study aimed to determine sleep disorders and associated risk factors in leukemia patients undergoing chemotherapy in Imam Khomeini Hospital of Sari, Iran. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015 with 100 patients selected. Inclusion criteria included complete mental and psychological health and being over 18 years old, and exclusion criteria included suffering other cancers, other chronic diseases, concurrent radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality standard questionnaire was used to collect data. The questionnaire consisted of mental sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep quality, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping drugs, and impaired daily functioning. Data were analyzed by software SPSS 18 and by using descriptive and inferential tests (Pearson, Spearman, T-test and chi-square). Totals of 47 men (47%) and 53 women (53%) with a mean age of $44.1{\pm}1.7$, participated in the study. The mean overall score of sleep quality was $9.3{\pm}3.9$, which represents the average sleep quality in most participants. T-test shows that males have better sleep quality than females (t=2.1; 95%CI:0.004-0.25; P<0.01). Also the sleep quality increased with age (r=0.22, P=0.03). Results show that the amount of sleep quality was only moderate in most patients, so it is necessary to take coping strategies to improve their quality of sleep.

      • Natural frequency analysis of joined conical-cylindrical-conical shells made of graphene platelet reinforced composite resting on Winkler elastic foundation

        Natural frequency behavior of graphene platelets reinforced composite (GPL-RC) joined truncated conical-cylindrical- conical shells resting on Winkler-type elastic foundation is presented in this paper for the first time. The rule of mixture and the modified Halpin-Tsai approach are applied to achieve the mechanical properties of the structure. Four different graphene platelets patterns are considered along the thickness of the structure such as GPLA, GPLO, GPLX, GPLUD. Finite element procedure according to Rayleigh-Ritz formulation has been used to solve 2D-axisymmetric elasticity equations. Application of 2D axisymmetric elasticity theory allows thickness stretching unlike simple shell theories, and this gives more accurate results, especially for thick shells. An efficient parametric investigation is also presented to show the effects of various geometric variables, three different boundary conditions, stiffness of elastic foundation, dispersion pattern and weight fraction of GPLs nanofillers on the natural frequencies of the joined shell. Results show that GPLO and BC3 provide the most rigidity that cause the most natural frequencies among different BCs and GPL patterns. Also, by increasing the weigh fraction of nanofillers, the natural frequencies will increase up to 200%.
