Ensuring sufficient supplies of clean, economic and acceptable energy is a critical global challenge for the 21st century. There seems little alternative to a greatly expanded role for nuclear power, but implementation of this option will depend on ensuring that all resulting wastes can be disposed of safely. Although there is a consensus on the fundamental feasibility of such disposal by experts in the field, concepts have to be developed to make them more practical to implement and, in particular, more acceptable to key stakeholders. By considering global trends and using illustrative examples from Japan, key areas for future R&D are identified and potential areas where the synergies of international collaboration would be beneficial are highlighted.

Shear Strength of an Aluminum Alloy Bonded with a DP-460 Adhesive: Single Lap-shear Joints

Single lap-shear joints (SLJ) specimens with and without partial round fillets were fabricated to measure the average shear strength of adhesives. The effects of the length of the adherend on the SLJ specimens were also investigated. An epoxy adhesive was used to bond aluminum alloy. Tensile tests were performed on the adhesive bulk specimens to measure the mechanical properties. The finite element analysis (FEA) method was used to measure the adhesive stress distributions, i.e., the peel and shear stresses, on the bonded part. The experimental results revealed that the specimen consisting short length of adherend and without the partial round fillets exhibited the smallest average shear strength of adhesive among the investigated specimens. FEA revealed that the low average shear strength for the specimen with a short adherend length was caused by high stress concentrations on the adhesive at the edge of the bonded part.
Airborne Ku-Band Antenna Subsystem for Satellite Communications

An Airborne Antenna Subsystem (AAS) is presented for Ku-band airborne broadband satellite communications. The AAS employs ultra-low profile dual reflector mechanical scanned antenna to reduce the additional aerodynamic drag with high RF performance up to low elevation beam direction. The AAS achieves precise satellite tracking capability under the severe dynamic condition of airplane. In addition, the AAS achieves precise polarization tracking capability for FSS satellite transponder application. Furthermore, wide-variety of novel technologies have been developed and applied to the AAS, such as high efficiency SSPAs, ultra-thin broadband OMT, etc. The AAS gas been confirmed to achieve excellent performance, and practically operated since Spring of 2004.
Significantly high polarization degree of the very low-albedo asteroid (152679) 1998 KU<sub>2</sub>

<P>We present a unique and significant polarimetric result regarding the near-Earth asteroid (152679) 1998 KU2, which has a very low geometric albedo. From our observations, we find that the linear polarization degrees of 1998 KU2 are 44.6 ± 0.5% in the <I>R</I>C band and 44.0 ± 0.6% in the <I>V</I> band at a solar phase angle of 81.0°. These values are the highest of any known airless body in the solar system (i.e., high-polarization comets, asteroids, and planetary satellites) at similar phase angles. This polarimetric observation is not only the first for primitive asteroids at large phase angles, but also for low-albedo (<0.1) airless bodies. Based on spectroscopic similarities and polarimetric measurements of materials that have been sorted by size in previous studies, we conjecture that 1998 KU2 has a highly microporous regolith structure comprising nano-sized carbon grains on the surface.</P>
