Hiroyuki Suzuki 2014. Brief introduction to the endangerment of Tibetic languages: Special reference to the language situation in Eastern Tibetan cultural area. Journal of Linguistic Studies 19(3), 281-301. This article provides a short introduction to the Tibetic languages which include varieties facing language endangerment because of various reasons. First, an overview of linguistic features of the Tibetic languages is given. Second, a detailed classification of language groups spoken in the eastern Tibetosphere and their linguistic situation are described. Third, current issues of the endangerment are discussed by presenting two specific cases of Melung Tibetan and Lhagang Tibetan, and finally some perspectives for the endangerment of Tibetic languages are presented. Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is a rare malignant salivary gland tumor. The carcinomatous component of the carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is mostly one type such as adenocarcinoma NOS, salivary duct carcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma. We present a case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma including two carcinomatous components. The tumor occurred in the palate of a 70-year-old man. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of both benign pleomorphic adenoma and the carcinoma area that showed adenocarcinoma NOS and squamous cell carcinoma. Finally this case was diagnosed as carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma including two carcinomatous components

Character Modeling and Synthesis from Human Handwriting Motions with Esthetic Evaluation

We develop a scheme for constructing character font models from human handwriting data. First, handwriting motions are measured using a pen-tablet device, and stored as a 3-dimensional time series data. Then, the data is used to construct characters by employing B-splines and the theory of smoothing splines based on the minimum hand jerk model. We can then synthesize arbitrary words with arbitrary cursiveness. Moreover, by employing the concept of Induction Field in Vision, we propose a tuning method of the so-called smoothing parameter from an esthetic viewpoint of the resulting cursive characters. The effectiveness of the developed method is verified by some experiments, including those on calligraphic learning.

From neutron diffraction data, the nuclear density of sodium nitrite is guessed directly by a maximum entropy method, and is compared with the results of usual least-squares calculations. The obtained nuclear density displays that the disordered NO_2 molecule becomes partially ordered in the ferroelectric phase just below the transition temperature. However, the density distribution cannot be explained by a two-Gaussian function, which suggests that the ordering is not a classical stochastic process but a quantum tunneling in a double minima local potential.
Detecting Early Pancreatic Cancer: Current Problems and Future Prospects

The number of patients with pancreatic cancer (PC) is currently increasing in both Korea and Japan. The 5-year survival rate of patients with PC 13.0%; however, resection with minimal invasion (tumor size: ≤10 mm) increases the 5-year survival rate to 80%. For this reason, early detection is essential, but most patients with early-stage PC are asymptomatic. Early detection of PC has been reported to require screening of high-risk individuals (HRIs), such as those with a family history of PC, inherited cancer syndromes, intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, or chronic pancreatitis. Studies on screening of these HRIs have confirmed a significantly better prognosis among patients with PC who were screened than for patients with PC who were not screened. However, to date in Japan, most patients with early-stage PC diagnosed in routine clinics were not diagnosed during annual health checks or by surveillance; rather, PC was detected in these patients by incidental findings during examinations for other diseases. We need to increase the precision of the PC screening and diagnostic processes by introducing new technologies, and we need to pay greater attention to incidental clinical findings.
Cloud mask generation algorithm over the ocean using GMS infrared images

Satellite remote sensing data offer the very powerful means to the understanding of global environment. It is, however, important to discriminate between clouds and the sea in oceanography. Therefore, it is required to remove clouds accurately. In this paper, automatic cloud mask generation algorithm over the ocean using GMS infrared images is described, because visible images are not available at night, but infrared images can be used day and night. This algorithm Consists of 4 steps. The maximum brightness temperature data for 5days, which may correspond to the sea surface temperature, has been developed in our laboratory. This sea surface temperature database is used as the reference to determine the threshold for cloud detection, because the sea surface temperature varies widely according to the latitude, current and location. Thick dominant clouds are detected by the temperature difference from this maximum brightness temperature data. The second step is the extraction of thin clouds around detected thick clouds from the brightness temperature difference between IR1 and IR2 channel. The third step is to detect the rest of clouds surrounding the detected clouds, tracing the edge of each cloud with a small window to determine the local threshold adaptively to remove clouds on the boundary. Finally, the region determined as cloud free is searched with a small window to extract isolated clouds. Sometimes, the boundary of warm current and cold current is classified as cloud area by conventional algorithms, but this proposed algorithm has solved this problem with the tracing the edge of cloud mask.
Meiotic role of SWI6 in Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

The transcript levels of DNA replication genes and some recombination genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae fluctuate and peak at the G1/S boundary in the mitotic cell cycle. This fluctuation is regulated by MCB(Mlu/cell cycle box) elements which are bound by the DSC1/MBF1 complex consisting of Swi6 and Mbp1. It is also known that some of the MCB-regulated genes are induced by treatment with DNA damaging agents and in meiosis. In this report, the function of △SWI6 in meiosis was investigated. △swi6 cells underwent sporulation as did wild-type cells. However, the deletion mutant cells showed reduced spore viability and lower frequency of recombination. The transcript levels of the recombination genes RAD51 and RAD54, which have MCB elements, were reduced in △swi6 cells. The transcript levels of SW16 itself were also induced and declined in meiosis. Furthermore, an increased dosage of SW16 enhanced the transcript level of the RAD51 gene and also the recombination frequency in meiosis. These results suggest that SW16 enhances the expression level of the recombination genes in meiosis in a dosage-dependent manner, which results in an effect on the frequency of meiotic recombination.
