This study was undertaken to review the case series of 216 ectopic pregnancies admitted to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pohang Sunrin Hospital from January, 1990 to December, 1991. The incidence of ectopic pregnancy was relatively high, being found to be 1 in 34.4 delivery cases. On the symptomatology, low abdominal pain was encountered in 96.8 percent, amenorrhea in 93.5 percent and vaginal bleeding in 16.2 percent in order. The fallopian tube was the most frequently, being found to be 98.6 percent, followed by the ovary with 0.9 percent and the cervix with 0.5 percent.
A Case of Successful Transcatheter Closure of Inferior Sinus Venosus Type Atrial Septal Defect

Atiral septal defect (ASD) is frequently observed in adult patients. Transcatheter closure has become a standard treatment of ostium secundum ASD, but surgical repair is still standard treatment option for the other types of ASD. To our knowledge, there was no report of successful transcatheter closure of inferior sinus venosus type ASD. We describe a 76-year old woman with inferior sinus venosus type ASD, who was treated with transcatheter closure because her medical condition was not suitable for general anesthesia and she did not want to undergo surgery. Fortunately, unlike typical inferior sinus venosus type ASD, the patient`s septal defect located away from tricuspid valve and there was a small ridge on the posterior side of the septal defect. Transcatheter closure procedure was successfully done. Transcatheter closure might be helpful for ASD patients who cannot receive surgical repair due to medical condition or other causes. In our case, the patient had atypical anatomical features of inferior sinus venosus type ASD. So if the patient with sinus venosus type ASD have a rim or ridge toward the caval vein, transcatheter closure could be considered as an alternative therapeutic option.
Disseminated atypical molluscum contagiosum in an immunocompetent adult

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a common and self-limiting viral infection that may coexist with an eczematous reaction. We report a case of disseminated atypical MC and id reaction in an immunocompetent adult. A 64-year-old male visited our department due to multiple tiny papules that had developed over a 2-year period. The patient had applied Desonide 0.05% lotion twice a day for several months due to itching. A physical examination revealed disseminated tiny pink papules located in pruritic erythematous patches on the trunk and extremities. A punch biopsy of the arm lesion showed well-demarcated epidermal papules containing large intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies, or molluscum bodies. Laboratory findings to rule out immunosuppression were normal. The patient refused further invasive treatment, stopped using the topical corticosteroid lotion, and began taking oral antihistamines. The lesions resolved 8 weeks later. MC is a poxvirus infection that most often affects young children. MC in adults is usually attributable to sexual transmission and is a great concern in immunocompromised individuals. In the present case, the lesion showed an extensive distribution and did not have a typical appearance. Prolonged application of topical corticosteroids may have contributed to the unusual presentation of MC in this patient.
Preparation of Probiotic Powder by the Spray Freeze-Drying Method

Spray freeze-drying (SFD) is a comparatively new method of producing biopharmaceutical powder preparations. In this study, Lactobacillus casei (IFO 15883)was spray freeze-dried to obtain a fine probiotic powder. The survival rate of L. casei in the powder after the SFD process was measured using plate agar counting. To improve the survival rate of L. casei during the SFD process, various experimental conditions were carried out. Among five growth media compositions, in Lactobacilli MRS broth with 1% mannose and 0.1% CaCO3, the viability of the freeze-dried powder was not significantly different from that of the initial powder (p>0.05). The most effective air pressure and protective agentduring SFD were 20 kPa and buffered peptone water (BPW), respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to estimate the physical structure and properties of the particles. SFD probiotic particles were of various shapes and sizes with porous structures under different SFD conditions. The average diameter of optimized probiotic powder particles with annealing was 24.8 μm. The survival rate of the final SFD probiotic powder under conditions was 97.7%.

In this study, a method to produce a fine volatile powder extracted from shiitake mushrooms using spray freeze-drying (SFD) was investigated. The analysis of the water-soluble aromatic compounds was carried out by headspace solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) coupled withgas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser particle size analysis were applied to characterizethe physical structure and size distribution of the SFD-derivedparticles. Eleven key volatile compounds were identified in the extracts of shiitake mushroomspre- and post-SFD. Recoveries of aromatic volatiles ranging from 30.9 - 82.9% were observed in the overall flavor profile results from the powder obtained with SFD. SEM analysis demonstrated that the particles of the aromatic powderwere spherical in nature, having highly porous surfaces andmean diameters of 19.3 μm.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a carcinogenic compound present in cigarette smoke. In this study, the amount of formaldehyde was analyzed in 5 kinds of cigarettes and the inhibitory effect of plant volatile extracts on the formation of FA was investigated. After extraction of the cigarette sample, FA was converted into its thiazolidine derivatives by reaction with cysteamine, and then measured using a gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorus detector (GC-NPD). The concentrations of FA in cigarette smoke were found between 138.24 and 217.82 μ㏖/g cigarette smoke. Extracts isolated from Welsh onion (Allium cepa L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.), crown daisy (Chrylsanthemum coronarium L.), green pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), and sesame dropwort (Oenanthe javanica DC) were used for analyzing their inhibitory effects on the formation of FA. The inhibitory effects of extracts of Welsh onion, garlic, crown daisy, green pepper, and sesame dropwort on the formation of FA were 64, 47, 38, 47, and 19%, respectively.

<P><B><I>Background:</I></B> Whether echo-Doppler-derived index of ventricular elastance or ventriculoarterial interaction can reliably reflect circulatory efficiency in various conditions was investigated in the present study and whether they can be helpful in predicting exercise capacity in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). <B><I>Methods and Results:</I></B> The 25 patients with DCM, 25 age- and gender-matched hypertensive patients, and 25 marathon runners underwent symptom-limited graded supine bicycle exercise echocardiography after resting echo-Doppler evaluation. Echo-Doppler-derived left ventricular (LV) diastolic elastance index (Ed), ventricular-vascular coupling index (10 × Ea/Ees), based on arterial elastance index (Ea) to LV end-systolic elastance index (Ees), and hemodynamic parameters were measured during rest and exercise. DCM patients had lower Ees, higher Ed and Ea/Ees with blunted exercise responses of Ees than the other groups, and the hypertensive patients had lower Ees and ΔEes compared with the marathon runners. Resting Ed, Ea/Ees, and total stiffness index (10 × Ed × Ea/Ees) correlated with exercise duration independent of age and gender. A stiffness index of 0.8 could reliably predict impaired exercise capacity. <B><I>Conclusions:</I></B> Echo-derived elastance is predictive of exercise capacity in patients with DCM. 오리피스 유량계와 터빈 유량계의 직관부길이와 유동안정기에 관한 연구

Orifice meters and turbine meters are frequently used for measuring gas flow in gas industry. However, to insure the accuracy of the measurement, a certain length of the meter run at the upstream of the flow meter is required. The objective of this study is to analyze flow measurement errors of the orifice meter quantitatively for shorter lengths of the meter runs than those suggested in the standard manuals with variation of diameter ratio(βratio) and flow rate and also to analyze flow measurement errors of the turbine meter with and without straightener.<br/> The test results showed that the flow measurement errors of the orifice meter were inversely proportional to the diameter ratio. In other words, when the diameter ratio is 0.3 and 0.7, the measurement error is -7.3% and -3.5%, respectively. the main reason of the measurement error is due to the swirl effect from the configuration of the meter run at the upstream of the flow meter. In case the length of the meter run is shorter than that suggested in the standard, the swirl effect is not removed completely and it affects the flow meter's performance. As mentioned above, the less the pipe diameter ratio, the more the flow measurement error. It means that the swirl effect on the orifice meter increases as the βratio decreases.
