        법학의 수호신은 말라빠진 실증주의에서 오래 머무를 수가 없었다. 실증주의 앞에서 은신처에 숨어 버려야했던 자연법을 샅샅이 탐색한 「베르크봄」(K.Bergbohm)은 지처에서, 자칭 실증주의자에 있어서도, 자연법적인 사상의 움직임을 발견하엿다. 그는 자연법을 결정적으로 추방하려고 했다. 그것은 1995년이었다. 만약 「베르크봄」이 40년 후인 1992년경에 그의 자연법수렵을 되풀이하였더라면, 그는 그만큼 새로운 자연법의 가장(Camouflage)놀랐을 것이다. 수천년을 통하여 자연법이라고 불리워졌고 또 다시금 명성을 얻고 있는 그 정신적·논리적인 이념내용은 명백히, 극복할 수 없고 영원한 것이다. 비록 사실상은 자연법을 승인하는 자들이 그릇된 수치감으로 17·8세기의 합리주의적 연역광신(Deduktionsfanatismus)을 고려하여 자연법이라는 이름을 감출지라도. 자연법이라는 개념만큼 압제를 받지 않으면 안 되었던 개념은 많지 않으며, 도한 확실히 그렇게 자랑스럽고 훌륭한 전통과 과거를 가지는 또 그만큼 미래를 가지는 개념도 거의 없다

        Rice Insects : The Role of Host Plant Resistance in Integrated Management Systems

        Insects are among the most important abiotic and biotic constraints to rice production. National rice research programs are in various stages in the development and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) stratagies for rice insect control. Among the various control tactics, insect resistant cultivars are sought as the major tactic in rice IPM. Through the activities of interdisciplinary teams of scientists significant progress has been made in the development and release of insect resistant cultivars to farmers. Because of its compatibility with other control tactics insect resistance has proven to fit well into the IPM approach to rice insect control agents and minimize the need for insecticide applications. The development of biotypes which overcome the resistance in rice plants has been a significant constraint in the breeding of rice for resistance to insects. Most notable examples in Asia are the green leafhopper, Nephotettix virescens, brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lygens and the Asian rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzae. The current breeding stratege is to develop rice cultivars with durable resistance on which virulent biotypes cannot adapt. In spite of the significant progress made in the breeding of insect resistant cultivars there are still numerous important rice insect species for which host plant resistance as a control tactic has not been fully utilized. Advances in biotechnology provide promise of solving some of the problems that have limited the use of host plant resistance as a major tactic in the integrated management of rice insect pests.

        The Rhine is the main and important river in a highly industrialized and densely populated area in western Europe. It is for this reason that it can serve as an example for the problems and their solution, occurring with water pollution contril. If we try to summarize the experience gained till now, we can come to the following conclusions: 1.) Waste water treatment plants will help to control river water pollution. The many mechanical and biological treatment plants operating now along the Rhine river are responsible for the high oxygen and low ammonia concentration and, to some extent, to the DOC reduction, too. 2.) Besides the biodegradable substances we also have to take care for the removal of the nonbiodegradable organics. In the Rhine river. area this could be achieved by a higher removal efficiency for the lignin sulfonic acids from the cellulose mills. 3.) In order to find out, which other substances may be harmful for water reuse or from an ecological point of view a special testing unit has been developed. It allows to divide the overall organics in a waste water effluent after their biodegradability and their adsorbability. These results give conclusions on the priority of further activities. 4.) River water pollution control should always be done in such a way that one can describe the effect of water flow on the concentrations to be measured. This helps to calcluate representative concentrations and they allow a real comparison between different years or different areas of the river. Here, besides the surrogate parameters for the inorganic and organic water constituents, the analytical determination of group parameters has proven worthwhile, as, for example, the organic chlorine and the organic sulfur concentration. In general all our experience from the Rhine river data proves that it will be possible to have large chemical as well as other industries along a river, while on the other side, we have to use the river water for the production of drinking water. This means that we are able to solve our water pollution problems also in highly industrialized areas. About 50 years ago it was decided in the Ruhr area to bring all industrial waste to the Emscher and to take all drinking water from the Ruhr, and that idea arose because people belived that both activities exclude one another. Here our thinking has changed. We nowadays know that we can solve all our waste water problems in such a way that we can use the same rivers for discharging the effluents as well as for the reuse of the water for industrial and drinking water purposes. The reason for this are new and better technologies for waste and water treatment. Water pollution is no longer a necessity for our industrialized areas, as we are able to solve all those problems efficiently.

        Foreign Direct Investment and Host-Country Trading Blocs

        We consider the impact of preferential trade agreements (PTAs) on horizontal foreign direct investment (FDI) coming from parent countries outside the PTA. While easier access to a larger market due to a PTA may justify new FDI, preexisting investments may be rationalized as firms concentrate production in a single plant in the PTA. Which effect dominates depends on the extent of pre-PTA tariff jumping. The number of firms in the industry and non-PTA-induced changes in inward FDI.

        Molecular Biology of Channel Proteins in the Central Nervous System

        Electrical signalling and synaptic transmission in the central nervous system are mediated by the transient activation of different classes of channel proteins which allow for signal propagation along and between excitable cells. Voltage-dependent ion channels control the membrane potential and release of neurotransmitter from presynaptic nerve ending. Ligand-gated ion channels serve as receptors for specific neurotransmitters at peripheral and central synapses. Molecular biology approaches have diclosed primary structures of inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitter receptor proteins and shown that these belong into a superfamily of evolutionarily related gene products of similar transmembrane topology and quaternary structure. Our laboratory has focused on the investigation of excitatory acetylcholine receptor, glutamate receptor and inhibitory glycine receptor proteins. Structural principles thought to be important for ion conduction through these channels will be discussed. Furthermore, channel proteins have recently have also been disclosed in intracellular membranes including synaptic vesicles. We have analyzed the primary structures of two putative synaptic vesicle channel proteins, synaptophysin and synaptoporin, and discuss the potential role of these channels in the transmitter release process.
