      • Silymarin Modulates Cisplatin-Induced Oxidative Stress and Hepatotoxicity in Rats

Mansour, Heba Hosny,Hafez, Hafez Farouk,Fahmy, Nadia Mohamed Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2006 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.39 No.6

Cisplatin (CDDP) is a widely used anticancer drug, but at high dose, it can produce undesirable side effects such as hepatotoxicity. Because silymrin has been used to treat liver disorders, the protective effect of silymarin on CDDP -induced hepatotoxicity was evaluated in rats. Hepatotoxicity was determined by changes in serum alanine aminotransferase [ALT] and aspartate aminotransferase [AST], nitric oxide [NO] levels, albumin and calcium levels, and superoxide dismutase [SOD], glutathione peroxidase [GSHPx] activities, glutathione content, malondialdehyde [MDA] and nitric oxide [NO] levels in liver tissue of rats. Male albino rats were divided into four groups, 10 rats in each. In the control group, rats were injected i.p. with 0.2 ml of propylene glycol in saline 75/25 (v/v) for 5 consecutive days [Silymarin was dissolved in 0.2 ml of propylene glycol in saline 75/25 v/v]. The second group were injected with CDDP (7.5 mg /kg, I.P.), whereas animals in the third group were i.p. injected with silymarin at a dose of 100 mg/kg/day for 5 consecutive days. The Fourth group received a daily i.p. injection of silymarin (100 mg/kg/day for 5 days) 1 hr before a single i.p. injection of CDDP (7.5 mg/kg). CDDP hepatotoxicity was manifested biochemically by an increase in serum ALT and AST, elevation of MDA and NO in liver tissues as well as a decrease in GSH and the activities of antioxidant enzymes, including SOD, GSHPx in liver tissues. In addition, marked decrease in serum NO, albumin and calcium levels were observed. Serum ALT, AST, liver NO level, MDA was found to decreased in the combination group in comparison with the CDDP group. The activities of SOD, GSHPx, GSH and serum NO were lower in CDDP group than both the control and CDDP pretreated with silymarin groups. The results obtained suggested that silymarin significantly attenuated the hepatotoxicity as an indirect target of CDDP in an animal model of CDDP-induced nephrotoxicity.

Teleworking Survey in Saudi Arabia: Reliability and Validity of Arabic Version of the Questionnaire

        Heba Yaagoub AlNujaidi,Mehwish Hussain,Sama’a H. AlMubarak,Asma Saud AlFayez,Demah Mansour AlSalman,Atheer Khalid AlSaif,Mona M. Al-Juwair 대한예방의학회 2022 예방의학회지 Vol.55 No.6

Objectives: This study aimed to adapt the survey questionnaire designed by Moens et al. (2021) and determine the validity and reliability of the Arabic version of the survey in a sample of the Saudi population experiencing teleworking. Methods: The questionnaire includes 2 sections. The first consists of 13 items measuring the impact of extended telework during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis. The second section includes 6 items measuring the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on self-view of telework and digital meetings. The survey instrument was translated based on the guidelines for the cultural adaptation of self-administrated measures. Results: The reliability of the questionnaire responses was measured by Cronbach’s alpha. The construct validity was checked through exploratory factor analysis followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to further assess the factor structure. CFA revealed that the model had excellent fit (root mean square error of approximation, 0.00; comparative fit index, 1.0; Tucker-Lewis index, 1; standardized root mean squared residual, 0.0). Conclusions: The Arabic version of the teleworking questionnaire had high reliability and good validity in assessing experiences and perceptions toward teleworking. While the validated survey examined perceptions and experiences during COVID-19, its use can be extended to capture experiences and perceptions during different crises.

Taphonomy and paleoecology of Cenomanian oysters from the Musabaa Salama area, southwestern Sinai, Egypt

        Ahmed El-Sabbagh,Heba Mansour,Magdy El-Hedeny 한국지질과학협의회 2015 Geosciences Journal Vol.19 No.4

This work is a taphonomic and paleoecologic study of Cenomanian oysters from the Musabaa Salama area, southwestern Sinai, Egypt. Disarticulation, fragmentation, encrustation and bioerosion are considered as the most predominant taphonomic features recorded in the studied oyster assemblages. Their distribution and frequency are greatly varied within the shells of the same species, as well as between shells of different species through the recorded oyster zones. Bioerosion structures include Tiers D, E, F, G and H. The multivariate statistical analyses document some characteristic ichnocoenoses. They include a sponge-dominated community (Entobia ichnocoenosis), a bivalve-dominated community (Gastrochaenolites ichnocoenosis), a serpulid-polychaete-dominated community (Maeandropolydora, Trypanites and/or Caulostrepsis ichnocoenosis), and an acrothoracican cirriped-dominated community (Rogerella ichnocoenosis). With rare exceptions, E. cretacea, G. torpedo and M. decipiens are common to abundant ichnospecies (>43%). E. ovula, E. retiformis and R. pattei are frequent to common ichnospecies (>5%). Other ichnospecies, including C. cretacea, G. orbicularis, T. solitarius, E. geometrica and C. taeniola are rare to frequent (<3%). Careful investigation of the host shells and the preserved encrusters and/or bioerosion sculptures provided data concerning the substrate characteristics, time of encrustation and bioerosion, rate of sedimentation, nutrients availability, and the general bathymetry and the rate of transgression.

Examination of Correlations Between Several Biochemical Components and Powdery Mildew Resistance of Flax Cultivars

Aly, Aly A.,Mansour, Mahmoud T. M.,Mohamed, Heba I.,Abd-Elsalam, Kamel A. The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2012 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.28 No.2

A field trial was conducted in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 growing seasons at Giza Agricultural Research Station to examine correlations between some biochemical componets and powdery mildews ($PM_s$) resistance in flax cultivars. Nine flax cultivars could be divided into five distinct groups, i.e., highly susceptible (Cortland and C.I. 2008), moderately susceptible (Giza 7, and Marshall), moderately resistant (Cass), resistant (Koto, Dakota and Wilden), and highly resistant (Ottowa 770B). The cultivars showed considerable variation in PM severity ranged from 8.05 on Ottowa 770B to 97.02% on Cortland. Total soluble proteins, total phenols, antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase), ascorbic acid, tocopherol, and malondialdehyde (MDA), were determined in uninfected leaves of the tested cultivars. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to measure the degree of association between PM severity and each component. All components showed significant (P < 0.05) or highly significant (P < 0.01) negative correlation with PM severity except MDA, which showed positive correlation (P < 0.01). Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the causal relationship between the biochemical components (independent variables) and PM severity (dependent variable). Coefficient of determination ($R^2$) values of the generated models ranged from 48.76 to 77.15%. Tocopherol, MDA, and proteins were the most important contributors to the total variation in PM severity as the $R^2$ values of their models were 71.78, 75.28, and 77.15%, respectively. The results of the present study suggest that tocopherol, MDA, and proteins in uninfected leaves can be used as biochemical markers to predict PM resistance in flax.
