A review of carbon-based materials and their coating techniques for biomedical implants applications

        Hassan Sadia,Nadeem Aroosa Younis,Qaiser Hafsah,Kashif Amer Sohail,Ahmed Ammad,Khan Khushbukhat,Altaf Amna 한국탄소학회 2023 Carbon Letters Vol.33 No.4

Carbon-based materials have emerged as an excellent class of biomedical materials due to their exceptional mechanical properties, lower surface friction, and resistance to wear, tear, and corrosion. Experimental studies have shown the promising results of carbon-based coatings in the field of biomedical implants. The reasons for their successful applications are their ability to suppress thrombo-inflammatory reactions which are evoked as an immune response due to foreign body object implantation. Different types of carbon coatings such as diamond-like carbon, pyrolytic carbon, silicon carbide, and graphene have been extensively studied and utilized in various fields of life including the biomedical industry. Their atomic arrangement and structural properties give rise to unique features which make them suitable for multiple applications. Due to the specificity and hardness of carbon-based precursors, only a specific type of coating technique may be utilized for nanostructure development and fabrication. In this paper, different coating techniques are discussed which were selected based on the substrate material, the type of implant, and the thickness of coating layer. Chemical vapor deposition-based techniques, thermal spray coating, pulsed laser deposition, and biomimetic coatings are some of the most common techniques that are used in the field of biomaterials to deposit a coating layer on the implant. Literature gathered in this review has significance in the field of biomedical implant industry to reduce its failure rate by making surfaces inert, decreasing corrosion related issues and enhancing biocompatibility.

Drones: A Strategy of Unmanned Warfare

( Fauzia Ghani ),( Sadia Mushtag ),( Sana Hassan ) 인천대학교 사회과학연구원 2016 사회과학연구 Vol.8 No.-

The operational impact of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is increasing day by day as compared to that of manned systems. It was not until Vietnam War that drones were considered an operational success, but with their successful deployment in Vietnam War by US and after that in the Yom Kippur War by Israel, they became the cynosure of all eyes in the worldwide military circles. The study is conducted to delve into the strategy of unmanned warfare. The purpose of this research paper is to explore the strategy of unmanned warfare by taking a case study of drones. It mainly focuses on the military use of drones and the pros and cons of their deployment. Many studies show that although drones have negative aspects like collateral damages and the psychological effects on the civilian population, but from the military point of view, they are very successful and intend to transform the nature of warfare from the traditional to the unconventional unmanned warfare with more efficiency, persistency and accuracy in their operations

      • Liver Cancer Stem Cell Induction from Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

        ( Said M Afify ),( Ghmkin Hassan ),( Hend M Nawara ),( Hager M Mansour ),( Amira Osman ),( Sadia Monzur ),( Hagar Ali Abu Quora ),( Maram H Zahra ),( Akimasa Seno ),( Yoshiaki Iwasaki ),( Masaharu Sen 대한간학회 2020 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2020 No.1

Aims: Liver cancer stem cells represent a small fraction of cells in liver cancer tissues so that studying these cells is very hard. Generation of liver cancer stem cells considered as one of the most important issue in cancer biology research. For this reason, we tried to generate liver cancer stem cells from induced pluripotent stem (iPSCs). Methods: First of all, CM was collected from confluent culture of Huh7 cells. Then, mouse iPSCs cells without MEF feeder cells were cultured in the presence of 50% CM for 4 weeks. The medium was changed every day with fresh medium containing 50% of CM. Mouse iPSCs cultured is the complete medium with LIF were used as a control. The survived cells (5x105 cells) were suspended in HBSS and injected into the liver of BALB/ c nude mice. After 25 days malignant tumor was formed in the liver while benign teratoma was formed by the injection of iPSCs. Tumors were then excised and partly fixed in 10% neutral formalin buffer solution for HE staining and immunohistochemical analysis. The rest of tumors were subjected to rt-qPCR anaylsis and primary culture. Results: Immunohistochemical analysis with liver cancer associated markers and cancer stem cell marker showed that malignant liver tumor was developed. These results indicate that the primary cells from the malignant tumor are rich in CSCs. Conclusions: This model will be very important and useful to assess the significant molecular mechanisms necessary to maintain liver cancer stem cells, which will help in defat liver cancer.

New antimicrobial flavonoids and chalcone from Colutea armata

        Farah Inamullah,Itrat Fatima,Sadia Khan,Mehdi Hassan Kazmi,Abdul Malik,Rasool Bakhsh Tareen,Tanveer Abbas 대한약학회 2017 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.40 No.8

Colucins A (1) and B (2), new flavonoids andcolucone (3), the new chalcone derivative, have been isolatedfrom the CHCl3-soluble fraction of the whole plant ofColutea armata along with luteolin (4), luteolin 7-O-b-Dglucoside(5), isoliquiritigenin (6), trans-caffeic acid (7)and stigmasterol (8) reported for the first time from thisspecies. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopictechniques including MS and 2D-NMR spectroscopy. Compounds 1 and 2 showed significant antimicrobialactivity against two Gram positive and three Gram negativebacterial strains while 3 was moderately active.
