<P>Enhanced piezoelectric and energy-harvesting characteristics of Mn-doped (Na0.5K0.5)NbO3 (NKN) nanofibers have been investigated with actual fabrication of potential flexible nanogenerators. The electrospinning process of nanofibers has been initially optimized with the proper level of chelating agent and annealing temperature. High quality nanofibers are successfully obtained only by means of a certain level of doped-Mn, which incorporates into the NKN perovskite structure and facilitates significant grain growth. A single-particle-stacked structure along the direction of fiber length becomes more evident with increasing Mn content. An XPS analysis confirms that Mn exists in multivalent states of Mn(2+)/Mn(3+). The effective piezoelectric coefficient of the nanofibers is found to be enhanced by 5 times with Mn-doping up to 3 mol % as characterized by piezoelectric force microscopy. The resultant flexible nanogenerators on PES films have exhibited 0.3 V output voltage and 50 nA output current under a bending strain.</P>

<P>This study examined the crystallization behavior of electroless Ni-P UBM with an medium phosphorous content (∼15 at%) induced by a single and step heat treatment using <I>in-situ</I> transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Different heat treatment processes affected the crystallization behavior of electroless Ni-P UBM. After single heat treatment at 300°C for 60 min, the electroless Ni-P UBM contained Ni and Ni<SUB>3</SUB>P. In addition to Ni and Ni<SUB>3</SUB>P, more complex Ni-P compounds, such as Ni<SUB>12</SUB>P<SUB>5</SUB> and Ni<SUB>5</SUB>P<SUB>2</SUB> formed in the electroless Ni-P UBM resulting from a step heat treatment at 150°C for 60 min followed by 300°C for 60 min.</P>

This paper shows the characteristic analysis of single-phase line start permanent magnet (LSPM) motors considering the overhang structure. To achieve the low-cost design of an LSPM motor, the overhang structure is adapted for the rotor with a constraint of a fixed magnet volume. To obtain the dynamic and steady performance of the motor, the circuit parameters are extracted using the 3D-static FEM(Finite Element Method) and the d-q equivalent circuit is used. The performance of the model with overhang is compared with the conventional model without overhang on the condition that both models have a fixed volume for the permanent magnet.

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>A low serum level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 5 (<I>PCSK5</I>) modulates HDL-C metabolism through the inactivation of endothelial lipase activity.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Therefore, we analysed the effects of <I>PCSK5</I> on HDL-C and investigated the association between genetic variation in <I>PCSK5</I> and dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) intakes in Korean adults and children. This population-based study which was conducted in South Korea included 4205 adults (43% male) aged 40–69 years and 1548 children (48.6% boys) aged 8–13 years. Dietary intake was assessed using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire in adults and modified 3-day food records in children.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>After adjustments for age and body mass index, we identified a significant association between SNP rs1029035 of the <I>PCSK5</I> gene and HDL-C concentrations specifically for men in both populations (adults, p=0.004; children, p=0.003; meta, p=7×10<SUP>−4</SUP>). Additionally, the interaction between the <I>PCSK5</I> rs1029035 genotype and dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids intake influenced serum HDL-C concentrations in men (adults, p=0.001; children, p=0.008). The deleterious effect of the C allele on serum HDL-C was present only when dietary PUFA intake was less than the dichotomised median level (adults, p=0.011; children, p=0.001). Serum HDL-C concentrations were decreased in men with the C allele genotype and low consumption of dietary PUFA including n-3 and n-6.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>According to these results, men carrying of the C allele were associated with low HDL-C concentrations and might exert beneficial effects on HDL-C concentrations following consumption of a high-PUFA diet.</P>

Objective: Cervical stabilization exercises are frequently to improve strength and endurance of cervical muscles. The purpose of this study was to identify changes in head repositioning accuracy (HRA) and neck proprioception through cervical stabilization exercises in healthy adults. Design: One group pretest-posttest design. Methods: Thirteen participants with no previous history of neck pain or injury to the cervical spine were recruited. HRA was measured by equipment including laser pointer, helmet, eye patch and marking pens. The distance between the spot where the beam had stopped and the center of the graph paper was measured three times with the averaged value used as the head repositioning accuracy. Neck proprioception was measured by a cervical range of motion device (CROM). Subjects wore the CROM tester and were to look straight ahead while bending his/her neck. Subjects were instructed to perform extension, lateral flexion and rotation, and the values were then measured and recorded. The measurements were performed pre-intervention, and after cervical stabilization exercise. Results: There was no significant difference on HRA after intervention. In addition, there was no significant difference on neck proprioception compared with pre-intervention. Conclusions: The present study did not identify any effect on HRA and neck proprioception of cervical stabilization exercise. Further investigations are required to elucidate this in old aged participants and patients with neck pain.

Recent studies have provided several lines of evidence that peripheral administration of oxytocin induces analgesia in human and rodents. However, the exact underlying mechanism of analgesia still remains elusive. In the present study, we aimed to identify which receptor could mediate the analgesic effect of intraperitoneal injection of oxytocin and its cellular mechanisms in thermal pain behavior. We found that oxytocin-induced analgesia could be reversed by $d(CH_2)_5[Tyr(Me)^2,Dab^5]$ AVP, a vasopressin-1a (V1a) receptor antagonist, but not by $desGly-NH_2-d(CH_2)_5[D-Tyr^2,Thr^4]OVT$, an oxytocin receptor antagonist. Single cell RT-PCR analysis revealed that V1a receptor, compared to oxytocin, vasopressin-1b and vasopressin-2 receptors, was more profoundly expressed in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and the expression of V1a receptor was predominant in transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1)-expressing DRG neurons. Fura-2 based calcium imaging experiments showed that capsaicin-induced calcium transient was significantly inhibited by oxytocin and that such inhibition was reversed by V1a receptor antagonist. Additionally, whole cell patch clamp recording demonstrated that oxytocin significantly increased potassium conductance via V1a receptor in DRG neurons. Taken together, our findings suggest that analgesic effects produced by peripheral administration of oxytocin were attributable to the activation of V1a receptor, resulting in reduction of TRPV1 activity and enhancement of potassium conductance in DRG neurons.
