Radiolucent rim as a possible diagnostic aid for differentiating jaw lesions

        Hamed Mortazavi,Maryam Baharvand,Somayeh Rahmani,Soudeh Jafari,Parvin Parvaei 대한영상치의학회 2015 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.45 No.4

In this study, we formulate a new proposal that complements previous classifications in order to assist dental practitioners in performing a differential diagnosis based on patients’ radiographs. We used general search engines and specialized databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, MedLine Plus, Science Direct, Scopus, and well-recognized textbooks to find relevant studies by using keywords such as “jaw disease,” “jaw lesions,” “radiolucent rim,” “radiolucent border,” and “radiolucent halo.” More than 200 articles were found, of which 70 were broadly relevant to the topic. We ultimately included 50 articles that were closely related to the topic of interest. When the relevant data were compiled, the following eight lesions were identified as having a radiolucent rim: periapical cemento-osseous dysplasia, focal cemento-osseous dysplasia, florid cemento-osseous dysplasia, cemento-ossifying fibroma, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, odontoma, and cementoblastoma. We propose a novel subcategory, jaw lesions with a radiolucent rim, which includes eight entities. The implementation of this new category can help improve the diagnoses that dental practitioners make based on patients’ radiographs.

An experimental study on the effect of a novel nature-inspired 3D-serrated leading edge on the aerodynamic performance of a double delta wing in the transitional flow regime

Hamed Khodabakhshian Naeini,Mahdi Nili-Ahmadabadi,김경천 대한기계학회 2019 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.33 No.12

This study examines the effect of nature-inspired leading edge 3D serration on the aerodynamic performance of a 65/35-degree double delta wing. Force measurement experiments were conducted on a smooth-surface model and a model equipped with various combinations of serrated pieces in the leading edge area. Four symmetric different positions were examined in a low-speed wind tunnel. The transitional flow regime was applied with Reynolds numbers of 2×10 5 and angles of attack (AOA) of 0 to 36 degrees. Compared to the clean model, there is a notable enhancement in the maximum lift coefficient, especially for the pieces located at the apex and kink angle locations. However, when changing the combination of serrated leading edge (SLE) elements, a decline in C L can be seen at some AOAs, and adding more SLE pieces is not always useful. A drag reduction is also achieved by installing these elements, which provided a higher lift-to-drag ratio for all AOAs. Finally, the serrated leading edge postponed the stall angle of the double delta wing.

A novel method to cease traumatic urethral bleeding

Hamed Akhavizadegan 대한응급의학회 2018 Clinical and Experimental Emergency Medicine Vol.5 No.1

Urethral bleeding due to trauma is a well-studied and often self-limiting condition. However, existing evidence regarding effective management of massive hemorrhage is limited. Intermittent penile compression and continuous perineal pressure are methods commonly used to control urethral bleeding. Nevertheless, these methods are not mentioned in the literature as specific treatment for this condition, and are rather learned by physicians via word of mouth. Sometimes these methods are ineffective and difficult for the patient to tolerate. This paper explains a new method implemented on a young man with massive urethral bleeding due to iatrogenic trauma, which was unresponsive to standard management. For this patient, the bleeding was controlled by gradually inflating the balloon of the catheter up to 4 mL. Given its safety and efficiency in controlling bleeding in this patient, it seems this new technique should be considered in cases of massive hemorrhage unresponsive to routine treatment.

A simple panel zone model for linear analysis of steel moment frames

Hamed Saffari,Esmaeil Morshedi 국제구조공학회 2020 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.35 No.4

Consideration of the panel zone (PZ) deformations in the analysis of steel moment frames (SMFs) has a substantial effect on structural response. One way to include the PZ effect on the structural response is Krawinkler’s PZ model, which is one of the best and conventional models. However, modeling of Krawinkler’s PZ model has its complexity, and finding an alternative procedure for PZ modeling is of interest. In this study, an efficient model is proposed to simplify Krawinkler’s PZ model into an Adjusted Rigid-End Zone (AREZ). In this way, the rigid-end-zone dimensions of the beam and column elements are defined through an appropriate rigid-end-zone factor. The dimensions of this region depend on the PZ stiffness, beam(s) and columns’ specifications, and connection joint configuration. Thus, to obtain a relationship for the AREZ model, which yields the dimensions of the rigid-end zone, the story drift of an SMF with Krawinkler’s PZ model is equalized with the story drift of the same structure with the AREZ model. Then, the degree of accuracy of the resulting relationship is examined in several connections of generic SMFs. Also, in order to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model in SMFs, several SMFs ranging from 3- to 30-story representing low- to high-rise buildings are examined through linear static and dynamic time history analysis. Furthermore, non-linear dynamic analyses of three SMFs conducted to validate the degree of accuracy of the proposed model in the non-linear analysis of SMFs. Analytical results show that there is considerable conformity between inter-story drift ratio (IDR) results of the SMFs with Krawinkler’s PZ model and those of the centerline SMFs with AREZ.

Preparation and field study of combined vaccine against Clostridium perfringens type A and bovine viral diarrhea virus in camels

Hamed Adel Elhelw 대한백신학회 2022 Clinical and Experimental Vaccine Research Vol.11 No.1

Purpose: The key objective of this study was to formulate a local combined inactivated gel adjuvanted vaccine containing bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV)-1, BVDV-2 viruses and Clostridium perfringens type A toxoid. The study evaluated its ability to enhance protective active immune response in camels’ calves against these infectious pathogens under field conditions. Materials and Methods: The local BVDV cytopathic strains and a local strain of toxigenic C. perfringens type A were used in vaccines formulation. Vaccines A and B were monovalent vaccines against C. perfringens and both strains of BVDVs, respectively. While the vaccine C was the combined vaccine used against the three agents. All vaccines were adjuvanted with Montanide gel. Sterility, safety, and potency tests were applied on the formulated vaccines. Virus neutralization and toxin anti-toxin neutralization tests were used to evaluate the immune responses. Results: Both monovalent (vaccine A) and combined vaccines (vaccine C) showed a protective level (4.5 and 3 IU/mL, respectively) against C. perfringens from the 2nd-week post-vaccination. The titer declined to 3 and 2 IU/mL, respectively at the 5th-month post-vaccination. The titer against BVDV, the monovalent vaccine (vaccine B) reached the beak (1.95 IU/mL) at the 1st-month post-vaccination and lasted till 6th-month post-vaccination (0.92 and 0.94 IU/mL) for BVDV-1a and BVDV-2, respectively. Conclusion: Vaccination of camels with the combined vaccine adjuvanted by Montanide gel containing C. perfringens type A toxoid and BVDV strains with 6-month intervals is recommended to protect camels safely and efficiently against such infections in the field.

Investigation on the aerodynamic performance and boundary layer characteristics of high deflection industrial turbine cascade at off-design conditions

Hamed Ghandi,Reza Aghaei-Togh,Abolghasem M. Tousi 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.12

This research leads to reach the effects of the off-design operation on the aerodynamic performance, boundary layer behavior, and associated loss occurring in a high deflection industrial turbine blade. Numerical simulations, proved opposed to experimental results, are used to achieve the detailed flow field of the cascade, incidence angels ranging from -15° to +10° at inlet chord Reynolds number varied from 9.63E+04 to 2.24E+05. Boundary layer specifications covering thickness, displacement thickness, and momentum thickness are achieved in the 15 points on the suction side and talk about detail on the authority of numerical simulations in various flow conditions. Results indicate that profile loss is forcefully increased by the rising up the incidence angle mostly in the positive range. Studying the effect of incidence angle on the boundary layer behavior indicates that as incidence angle varies from negative to positive, all three characteristics of the boundary layer increase gradually.

Predicting needlestick and sharps injuries and determining preventive strategies using a Bayesian network approach in Tehran, Iran

Hamed Akbari,Fakhradin Ghasemi 한국역학회 2018 Epidemiology and Health Vol.40 No.-

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have shown that the rate of needlestick and sharps injuries (NSIs) is unacceptably high in Iranian hospitals. The aim of the present study was to use a systematic approach to predict and reduce these injuries. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 5 hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Eleven variables thought to affect NSIs were categorized based on the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) framework and modeled using a Bayesian network. A self-administered validated questionnaire was used to collect the required data. In total, 343 cases were used to train the model and 50 cases were used to test the model. Model performance was assessed using various indices. Finally, using predictive reasoning, several intervention strategies for reducing NSIs were recommended. RESULTS: The Bayesian network HFACS model was able to predict 86% of new cases correctly. The analyses showed that safety motivation and fatigue were the most important contributors to NSIs. Supervisors’ attitude toward safety and working hours per week were the most important factors in the unsafe supervision category. Management commitment and staffing were the most important organizational-level factors affecting NSIs. Finally, promising intervention strategies for reducing NSIs were identified and discussed. CONCLUSIONS: To reduce NSIs, both management commitment and sufficient staffing are necessary. Supervisors should encourage nurses to engage in safe behavior. Excessive working hours result in fatigue and increase the risk of NSIs.

        Hamed Mortazavi,Maryam Baharvand,Yaser Safi,Kazem Dalaie,Mohammad Behnaz,Fatemeh Safari 대한영상치의학회 2019 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.49 No.2

Purpose: The aim of this study was to review the common conditions associated with mandibular canal widening. Materials and Methods: General search engines and specialized databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, Science Direct, and Scopus were used to find relevant studies by using the following keywords: “mandibular canal,” “alveolar canal,” “inferior alveolar nerve canal,” “inferior dental canal,” “inferior mandibular canal,” “widening,” “enlargement,” “distension,” “expansion,” and “dilation.” Results: In total, 130 articles were found, of which 80 were broadly relevant to the topic. We ultimately included 38 articles that were closely related to the topic of interest. When the data were compiled, the following 7 lesions were found to have a relationship with mandibular canal widening: non-Hodgkin lymphoma, osteosarcoma, schwannoma, neurofibroma, vascular malformation/hemangioma, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes, and perineural spreading or invasion. Conclusion: When clinicians encounter a lesion associated with mandibular canal widening, they should immediately consider these entities in the differential diagnosis. Doing so will help dentists make more accurate diagnoses and develop better treatment plans based on patients’ radiographs.
