U.S. host campuses face instructional challenges from increasing numbers of international students from Confucian Heritage Culture (CHC) countries. Yet, the presence of CHC students offers learning opportunities for U.S. faculty in the context of internationalizing their higher education campuses. This study surveyed faculty at three U.S. host universities. It explored faculty understandings of Confucian culture, their perceptions of CHC countries’ international student learning, strategies used by faculty when teaching CHC students, and value faculty recognized when learning from CHC students. Results showed that a majority of faculty recognized the core values of Confucian culture. Yet, they were not fully aware of the cultural impact on CHC students’ learning, and the strategies they employed were mainly from the American perspectives. They did not integrate CHC students’ cultural heritages in their teaching practices and only partially accommodated CHC learners in teaching. This study calls for consciousness to transform faculty mindsets understanding the importance of students’ cultural differences in order to bring about a dramatic change in their teaching practices. Doing so may enhance the success of CHC students fomenting further internationalization at their host universities.
Leader-following Cluster Consensus in Multi-agent Systems with Intermittence

In this paper, the cluster consensus problem of first-order nonlinear multi-agent systems with aperiodic intermittent communication is studied through pinning leader-following approach. The pinning consensus algorithm based on the relative local intermittent information is designed according to the varies linking ways of clustered network structure. New notions of leading intermittence and inter-cluster intermittence which related to the intermittent linking ways of leader-following clustered structure are developed, and several new systems with intermittence are established due to the new notions. Besides, dynamics with inherent delay are also considered to extend our results to a more general framework. The original communication graph without intermittent pattern is supposed to be directed and weakly connected. Some consensus criteria are derived to guarantee that the cluster consensus problem for the systems with intermittent communication can be solved. Finally, numerical simulations are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

To realize the explosive separation of carbon-fiber-reinforced composites under a linear-shaped charge, the failure mode of the materials under a linear-shaped charge jet was obtained by combining numerical simulation with experiment. Results show that under the action of the shaped charge jet, the three main failure modes of composite materials are shear failure, delamination failure and tensile failure. Moreover, there are different failure modes of composite materials with different thicknesses. In the early stage of cutting, local fiber peeling occurs on the surface of laminates with different thicknesses under the action of initial jet and stress wave. The thin laminate is sheared directly under the energy of the high-speed jet while the thick laminate first suffers shear failure under the action of the jet. After the end of the jet action, tensile failure occurs under the action of stress wave and, at the same time, spalling occurs along the thickness direction.
