        Inhibition of Microcystis aeruginosa by the Extracellular Substances from an Aeromonas sp

        Growth of Microcystis aeruginosa could be inhibited significantly within 24 h by the extracellular substances prepared from Aeromonas sp. strain FM. During the treatment, the concentration of extracellular soluble carbohydrates increased significantly in algal culture. Morphological and ultrastructural changes in M. aeruginosa cells, including breakage of the cell surface, secretion of mucilage, and intracellular disorganization of thylakoids, were observed. HPLC-MS analysis showed that the extracellular substances of Aeromonas sp. strain FM were a mixture of free amino acids, tripeptides, and clavulanate. Among these, the algaelysis effects of lysine and clavulanate were confirmed.

      • A novel design method for improving collapse resistances of multi-story steel frames with unequal spans using steel braces

        The bearing capacities resisted by the two-bay beams of multi-story planar frames with unequal spans under column removal scenarios differ considerably owing to the asymmetric stress on the left and right beams connected to the failed column and cause the potential for beams with larger span-to-depth ratios to be unable to exert effectively, which is disadvantageous for resisting the vertical load in unequal-span frame structures. To address this problem, the structural measure of adding braces to the weak bays of multi-story unequal-span frames was proposed, with the objective of achieving a coordinated stress state in two-bay beams with unequal spans, thereby improving the collapse resistance of unequal-span frame structures. Before conducting the numerical simulation, the modeling methods were verified by previous experimental results of two multi-story planar frames with and without steel braces. Thereafter, the effects of the tensile and compressive braces on the collapse behavior of the frame structures were elucidated. Then, based on the mechanical action laws of the braces throughout the collapse process, a detailed design method for improving the collapse resistance of unequal-span frame structures was proposed. Finally, the proposed design method was verified by using sufficient example models, and the results demonstrated that the design method has good application prospects and high practical value.

        Draft Genome Assembly and Annotation for Cutaneotrichosporon dermatis NICC30027, an Oleaginous Yeast Capable of Simultaneous Glucose and Xylose Assimilation

        The identification of oleaginous yeast species capable of simultaneously utilizing xylose and glucose as substrates to generate value-added biological products is an area of key eco- nomic interest. We have previously demonstrated that the Cutaneotrichosporon dermatis NICC30027 yeast strain is capable of simultaneously assimilating both xylose and glucose, resulting in considerable lipid accumulation. However, as no high-quality genome sequenc- ing data or associated annotations for this strain are available at present, it remains chal- lenging to study the metabolic mechanisms underlying this phenotype. Herein, we report a 39,305,439 bp draft genome assembly for C. dermatis NICC30027 comprised of 37 scaffolds, with 60.15% GC content. Within this genome, we identified 524 tRNAs, 142 sRNAs, 53 miRNAs, 28 snRNAs, and eight rRNA clusters. Moreover, repeat sequences totaling 1,032,129 bp in length were identified (2.63% of the genome), as were 14,238 unigenes that were 1,789.35 bp in length on average (64.82% of the genome). The NCBI non-redundant protein sequences (NR) database was employed to successfully annotate 11,795 of these unigenes, while 3,621 and 11,902 were annotated with the Swiss-Prot and TrEMBL databases, respectively. Unigenes were additionally subjected to pathway enrichment analyses using the Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Cluster of Orthologous Groups of proteins (COG), Clusters of orthologous groups for eukaryotic com- plete genomes (KOG), and Non-supervised Orthologous Groups (eggNOG) databases. Together, these results provide a foundation for future studies aimed at clarifying the mech- anistic basis for the ability of C. dermatis NICC30027 to simultaneously utilize glucose and xylose to synthesize lipids.

      • Exploring the Role of Big Data in Reshaping Competitive Advantages in the Film and Television Industry

        This study focuses on the role and value of big data marketing in shaping firm competitive advantages and transforming industries, with a particular focus on the film and television (FT) industry. We argue that big data may present myriad possibilities for firms to take hold of growth opportunities and improve their competitive advantages. We specifically explore the role and value of big data, and highlighting the effect of big data on driving firm marketing strategy and further illustrate the usefulness of big data in the FT industry through the cases of US House of Cards, Chinese Tiny Times, and Indian Satyamev Jayate. We provide a more comprehensive review of the big data, demonstrating the importance of exploiting big data marketing in the FT industry. We conclude with the possible practical implications.

        Estimation for the Random Errors of Reflector Surfaces Using Measured Data

        In this research, a novel error-decomposition scheme is developed to determine efficiently the random errors of reflector surface basedon the discrete measurement data. The least squares fitting of semi-closed B-spline surface is employed. Subsequently, a spatialstatistical analysis is performed to determine whether the spatial independent distribution of the sampled data points is attained fora given confidence level. This research rests on the assumption that the measurement errors of instruments are trivial compared withrandom errors caused by machining and assembly inaccuracies. The presented methodology has been applied to the surface analysisof a 3.7 m reflector antenna.

        Purpose–The importance of online word of mouth has generated considerable interest among both academics and practitioners. The present study aims to introduce a framework that addresses the factors influencing quick online word of mouth. Specifically, this paper examines the impacts of various motivations of online reviews, which are shaped by different consumer values, on quick online word of mouth. Design/methodology/approach–This study collected survey data from 328 consumers in China and tested the research model using a structural equation approach. Findings - Our results suggest that online review motivations significantly influence the quick online word of mouth among Chinese consumers, which are shaped by consumer values. We conclude that in order to better understand online word of mouth of consumers in the world’s largest emerging market, it might be more beneficial for managers to concentrate on analyzing various motivations that incentivize online consumers to write reviews and the respective consumer values shaping such review motivations. Research implications or Originality–Based on results from a survey sent to online consumers in China, we develop implications for online word of mouth management and research as well as practitioners. One of the most notable contributions of this study is to demonstrate that online review motivations, which are shaped by consumer values, have important impacts on quick online word of mouth. However, different types of online review motivations, which are shaped by different consumer values, exert different effects on quick online word of mouth, suggesting that not all consumer values and online review motivations have the equal effect on quick online word of mouth. We enhance understanding of what drive consumers’ quick online word of mouth, and how consumer values and reviews motivations matter.

        Multi-channel analyzer based on a novel pulse fi tting analysis method

        A novel pulse fitting analysis (PFA) method is presented for the acquisition of nuclear spectra. Thecharging process of the feedback capacitor in the resistive feedback charge-sensitive preamplifier isequivalent to the impulsive pulse, and its impulse response function (IRF) can be obtained by non-linearfitting of the falling edge of the nuclear pulse. The integral of the IRF excluding the baseline representsthe energy deposition of the particles in the detector. In addition, since the non-linear fitting process inPFA method is difficult to achieve in the conventional architecture of spectroscopy system, a new multichannel analyzer (MCA) based on Zynq SoC is proposed, which transmits all the data of nuclear pulsesfrom the programmable logic (PL) to the processing system (PS) by high-speed AXI-Stream in order toimplement PFA method with precision. The linearity of new MCA has been tested. The spectrum of 137Cswas obtained using LaBr3(Ce) scintillator detector, and was compared with commercial MCA by ORTEC. The results of tests indicate that the MCA based on PFA method has the same performance as thecommercial MCA based on pulse height analysis (PHA) method and excellent linearity for g-rays withdifferent energies, which infers that PFA method is an effective and promising method for the acquisitionof spectra. Furthermore, it provides a new solution for nuclear pulse processing algorithms involvingregression and iterative processes

        Adaptive-and-Resolvable Fractional Repetition Codes Based on Hypergraph

        Fractional repetition (FR) codes can achieve exact uncoded repair for multiple failed nodes, with lower computational complexity and bandwidth overhead, and effectively improve repair performance in distributed storage systems (DSS). The actual distributed storage system is dynamic, that is, the parameters such as node storage overhead and number of storage nodes will change randomly and dynamically. Considering that traditional FR codes cannot be flexibly applied to dynamic distributed storage systems, a new construction scheme of adaptive-and-resolvable FR codes based on hypergraph coloring is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the linear uniform regular hypergraph can be constructed based on the heuristic algorithm of hypergraph coloring proposed in this paper. Then edges and vertices in hypergraph correspond to nodes and coded packets of FR codes respectively, further, FR codes is constructed. According to hypergraph coloring, the FR codes can achieve rapid repair for multiple failed nodes. Further, FR codes based on hypergraph coloring can be generalized to heterogeneous distributed storage systems. Compared with Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, simple regenerating codes (SRC) and locally repairable codes (LRC), adaptive-and-resolvable FR codes have significant advantages over repair locality, repair bandwidth overhead, computational complexity and time overhead during repairing failed nodes.

        A Diffusion Filter for Discontinuous Surface Measured by High Definition Metrology

        High definition metrology can measure three-dimensional surface topography of discontinuous surfaces that have holes and grooves with large field of field and high lateral resolution. However, when separating discontinuous surfaces in to various scale-limited surface such as form, waviness and roughness, filtering techniques such as Gaussian filters cause “boundary distortion problems. This is because the discontinuous surfaces do not have large enough continuous evaluation area for Gaussian filtering. Therefore, this research proposes a modified anisotropic diffusion filter, which is formulated in terms of heat diffusion, to separate discontinuous surfaces into various scale-limited surfaces. An edge detector is proposed to ensure that the diffusion process only takes place inside the surface but not blur the surface boundaries. In addition, the diffusion time is specified considering the linkage with the cutoff wavelength of Gaussian filters. The performance of the proposed filter is validated by simulated and practical discontinuous surfaces. Moreover, the three dimensional areal surface texture features specified in ISO 25178 can be evaluated from the filtered scale-limited surfaces. Results have demonstrated that the proposed approach is an effective tool for separating and evaluating areal surface texture for discontinuous surfaces regardless of the continuity of the evaluation surface.

        Determination and prediction of the digestible and metabolizable energy contents of corn germ meal in growing pigs

        Objective: This experiment was conducted to determine the chemical composition, digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents of corn germ meals (CGM) and to develop equations to predict the corresponding energy contents based on the chemical characteristics of individual CGM. Methods: Sixty-six barrows (initial body weight = 51.3±4.6 kg) were allotted to 11 diets including a basal diet and 10 CGM test diets in a completely randomized design. In the test diets, CGM was included in replacement of 30% of the energy-providing ingredients in the basal diet, resulting in a final inclusion rate of 29.1%. Each diet was fed to 6 barrows housed in individual metabolism crates for a 7-d acclimation period followed by a 5-d total but separate collection of feces and urine. Results: Considerable variation was observed in acid-hydrolyzed ether extract, ether extract, ash, calcium (Ca) and total phosphorus contents among the CGM samples. On dry matter (DM) basis, the DE and ME contents of the CGM ranged from 10.22 to 15.83 MJ/kg and from 9.94 to 15.43 MJ/kg, respectively. The acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents were negatively correlated with the DE and ME contents of CGM samples. The best-fit prediction equations for the DE and ME values (MJ/kg DM) of the 10 CGM were: DE = 26.85–0.28 insoluble dietary fiber (%)–17.79 Ca (%); ME = 21.05–0.43 ADF (%)–11.40 Ca (%). Conclusion: The chemical compositions of CGM vary depending on sources, particularly in ether extract and Ca. The DE and ME values of CGM can be predicted based on their chemical composition in growing pigs.
