Prolongation of Neuromuscular Block of Succinylcholine Chloride by Ketamine in Rabbits
Gweon, Kyeong Deog,Chung, Woon Hyok CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1980 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.8 No.1
The effect of ketamine on the muscle relaxation produced by succinylcholine chloride was studied. The cause of prolongation of neuromuscular block of succinylcholine chloride by ketamine was discussed. The clinical dose of S.C.C. should be carefully adjusted, if ketamine would be administered.

The $^{13}C-NMR$ shifts of a series of para-substituted $8-aryl-tricyclo[3.2.1.0^{2,7}]oct-8-yl$ and $9-aryl-tricyclo[3.3.1.0^{2,8}]-non-9-yl$ cations were measured in $FSO_3H/SO_2ClF\ at\-90^{\circ}$ in order to examine whether the ${\rho}^{C^+}$ values can be used as a measure of the geometric influence on the charge delocalization resulting from ${\rho}$ conjugation in rigid tricyclopropylcarbinyl cations. Plot of the ${\Delta}{\delta}^{C+} shifts against the ${\sigma}^{C+}$ constants revealed excellent linear correlation. The 8-aryl tricyclooctyl systems yielded a ${\rho}^{C+}$ value of -5.00 with r = 0.9962. Previous investigation of the 9-aryl-tricyclononyl systems gave a correlation coefficient of r = 0.9948 with a slope of ${\rho}^{C+}$ = -4.95. A fair parallelism exists between the results of $^{19}F-NMR $ studies and the change of ${\rho}^{C+}$ value in these cations. Consequently, it is established that the ${\rho}^{C+}$ value can be used to explain the mechanism of charge stabilization of the rigid cyclopropylcarbinyl cation such as tricyclo $[3.2.1.0^{2,7}]oct-8-yl$ cation.
Escherichia coli deactivation study controlling the atmospheric pressure plasma discharge conditions
Gweon, B.,Kim, D.B.,Moon, S.Y.,Choe, W. Elsevier 2009 CURRENT APPLIED PHYSICS Vol.9 No.3
Bio-applications of plasma have been widely studied in recent years. However, considering the high interests, the inactivation mechanisms of micro-organisms by plasma have not been clearly explained. The goal of this study was to find the sterilization mechanisms and define the major sterilization factors with the atmospheric pressure radio-frequency helium glow discharge. For the sterilization target the Escherichia coli was used. To begin with the sterilization study, the plasma characteristics were investigated by means of electrical and optical diagnostics. Especially, the gas temperature was controlled under 50oC by keeping the input power less than 70W to eliminate the thermal effects. Contribution of the UV irradiation from the plasma was studied and it turned out to be negligible. On the other hand, it was found that the sterilization was more effective up to 40% with only 0.15% oxygen addition to the helium supply gas. It indicates that the inactivation process was dominantly controlled by oxygen radicals, rather than heat or UV photons.

The precise effects of protein intake on fractional synthesis rate (FSR) of muscle protein are still under debate. The sample size of these studies was small and the conclusions in young and elderly subjects were inconsistent. To assess the effect of dietary protein intake on the FSR level, we conducted a meta-analysis of controlled protein intake trials. Random-effects models were used to calculate the weighted mean differences (WMDs). Ten studies were included and effects of short-term protein intake were evaluated. In an overall pooled estimate, protein intake significantly increased the FSR (20 trials, 368 participants; WMD: 0.025%/h; 95%CI: 0.019-0.031; P < 0.0001). Meta-regression analysis suggested that the protein dose was positively related to the effect size (regression coefficient = 0.108%/h; 95%CI: 0.035, 0.182; P = 0.009). A subgroup analysis indicated that protein intake significantly increased FSR when the protein dose was ${\leq}$ 0.80 g/kg BW (16 trials, 308 participants; WMD: 0.027%/h; 95%CI: 0.019-0.031; P < 0.0001), but did not affect FSR when the protein dose was > 0.80 g/kg BW (4 trials, 60 participants; WMD: 0.016%/h; 95%CI: 0.004-0.029; P = 0.98). In conclusion, this study is the first integrated results showing that a short-term protein intake is effective at improving the FSR of muscle protein in the healthy elderly as well as young subjects. This beneficial effect seems to be dose-dependent when the dose levels of protein range from 0.08 to 0.80 g/kg BW.

<P>In Pt/Co/MgO trilayers, the contribution to the total perpendicular magnetic anisotropy from the bottom Pt/Co interface is significantly greater than that from the top Co/MgO interface at intermediate annealing temperatures. However, the relative contribution is reversed at the highest annealing temperature examined in this study, 400 degrees C. These results indicate that as the annealing temperature increases, the quality of the Pt/Co interface deteriorates owing to the intermixing of Pt and Co, whereas the quality of the Co/MgO interface improves as oxygen atoms, which are interpenetrated into the Co layer during the deposition of MgO, are diffused toward the Co/MgO interface.
