        Windmill Palm Waste Fiber Used as a Sustainable Nonwoven Mat with Acoustic Properties

        Although windmill palm fiber is an abundant cellulose resource, it has not been efficiently used owing to the lackof the basic knowledge of its structure and properties. In this study, the surface morphology of windmill palm fiber wasmodified using acetyl chloride and acetic anhydride to generate hydrophobic nonwoven mats with optimal acousticproperties. A scanning electron microscope, a specific surface porosimeter, an infrared spectrum, and a standing wave tubewere used to examine the fiber’s micromorphology, pore structure, chemical composition, and sound absorptionperformance. Acetylation treatment damages the compact structure of the cell wall, resulting in the formation of nanoscalepores. Acetyl chloride changes the average pore diameter of fibers by 17 nm. When the polyvinyl alcohol content was 0.5 %and the surface density of mat was 0.140 g/cm2, the sound absorption coefficient for the acetic anhydride-modified fiber was0.66, which is 65 % greater than that of the untreated windmill palm fiber nonwoven mat. The windmill palm fiber has goodpotential for application in wallpaper and filling materials used at home.

        Preparation and Self-Healing Behaviors of Poly(acrylic acid)/Cerium Ions Double Network Hydrogels

        This work aims at developing an approach to poly(acrylic acid)/cerium ions (PAA/cerium ions) double network hydrogels and exploring the self-healing properties of the hydrogels, with expectation to provide some clues for constructing new healable gel actuators and enrich the family of self-healable hydrogels. The hydrogel is covalently crosslinked by a traditional crosslinking agent N,N'-methylene bis-acrylamide to form the first network and further physically crosslinked by the ionic interaction between cerium ions and the carboxyl groups in the hydrogel network. The preparation method and self-healing behaviors of the hydrogels are investigated.

        Yap signalling regulates ductular reactions in mice with CRISPR/Cas9-induced glycogen storage disease type Ia

        Glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSD-Ia) is caused by a deficiency in the glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase, G6pc) enzyme, which catalyses the final step of gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. Accumulation of G6pc can lead to an increase in glycogen and development of fatty liver. Ductular reactions refer to the proliferation of cholangiocytes and hepatic progenitors, which worsen fatty liver progress. To date, however, ductular reactions in GSD-Ia remain poorly understood. Here, we studied the development and potential underlying mechanism of ductular reactions in GSD-Ia in mice. We first generated GSD-Ia mice using CRISPR/Cas9 to target the exon 3 region of the G6pc gene. The typical GSD-Ia phenotype in G6pc−/− mice was then analysed using biochemical and histological assays. Ductular reactions in G6pc−/− mice were tested based on the expression of cholangiocytic markers cytokeratin 19 (CK19) and epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM). Yes-associated protein 1 (Yap) signalling activity was measured using western blot (WB) analysis and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Verteporfin was administered to the G6pc−/− mice to inhibit Yap signalling. The CRISPR/Cas9 system efficiently generated G6pc−/− mice, which exhibited typical GSD-Ia characteristics, including retarded growth, hypoglycaemia, and fatty liver disease. In addition, CK19- and EpCAM-positive cells as well as Yap signalling activity were increased in the livers of G6pc−/− mice. However, verteporfin treatment ameliorated ductular reactions and decreased Yap signalling activity. This study not only improves our understanding of GSD-Ia pathophysiology, but also highlights the potential of novel therapeutic approaches for GSD-Ia such as drug targeting of ductular reactions.
