The Effect of Exchange Rate Misalignment on Agricultural Trade
( Gue Dae Cho ),( Min Kyoung Kim ) 한국농촌경제연구원 2005 Journal of Rural Development Vol.28 No.1
This paper examines whether exchange rate misalignment negatively affects agricultural trade, compared to other industrial sectors. Nominal exchange rate misalignment is obtained from the percentage deviation of real exchange rates from their long-run equilibrium based on the theory of purchasing power parity. In order to explore this issue, a bilateral trade matrix involving trade flows between ten developed countries is constructed. Using panel data analysis, a gravity model is estimated for four industrial sectors over the period from 1976 to 1999. The study has found that over-valuation (under-valuation) of the nominal exchange rate negatively (positively) affects export performance of the agricultural sector in particular. In the large-scale manufacturing sectors considered in this paper, exports are not significantly affected by exchange rate misalignment.
국가별 부패 수준이 농업인의 상대적 소득에 미치는 영향 분석

Many previous studies indicate that the government corruption level of a country can affect the level of inequality. These findings imply that corruption can also affect the relative income level of farmers compared to workers of other industry sectors. This paper analyzes the relationship between corruption and the relative income of farmers by incorporating two different measures of corruption levels. Using a sample of 113 countries between 2005 and 2012, we find a non-linear impact of corruption on the relative income of farmer. In a sample of high income countries, we find negative impacts while in a sample of low income countries, the impacts are positive.

This paper analyzes the relationship between corruption and agricultural income using data from 113 countries between 2005 and 2012. Using two measures of corruption, the Corruptions Perception Index (CPI) reported annually by Transparency International (TI), and the Control of Corruption Index (CCI) produced annually by the World Bank, we find a negative impact of corruption on agricultural income in general. However, the impacts are different depending on the income level of countries. In high-income countries, we show that there are statistically significant and bigger correlations between corruption and agricultural income. The empirical result suggests that a one-unit increase in CPI increases the agricultural income by about 18.9%, while a one-unit increase in CCI increases the agricultural income by about 33.9%. If South Korea has the same level of corruption compared with Japan, the agricultural income in South Korea would increase by 34% (based on CPI) and 39% (based on CCI) respectively.
자유무역협정(FTA)이 중국의 농산물 수출에 미치는 영향 분석 : 경쟁국 효과를 중심으로

Recently, there has been a lot of studies about the effect of Korea-China FTA on Korean agricultural sector. However, most of them examine the issue on the Korea`s position and consider only two countries` agricultural situation but do not consider the competing country effects on Korea-China FTA. Using the China`s export data over the period from 2001 to 2010 for 49 destination countries, this paper analyzes the effect of FTA on China`s agricultural export using a gravity equation. The study has found that a FTA increases China`s agricultural export around 56.3%~80.1%. However, if the importing country already makes a FTA with other agricultural exporting countries such as the United States, agricultural export increases around 29.3%~39.0% due to the competing country effect.

Recently, there have been a lot of studies examining the effect of Korea-China FTA on Korean agricultural sector. Many of the studies, however, are based on the assumption of the perfect competition of world agricultural market, which should be tested empirically. In this paper, using Knetter’s empirical model, which can test the level of market competition, we examined the pricing to market (PTM) behavior of Chinese exporters in several gallic and bean importing countries for pre- and post-WTO era. More price discrimination across destinations was observed after China joined the WTO, and this might imply that there will be a potential pricing to market behavior of China in Korean agricultural market after Korea-China FTA becomes effective.
EVOG: a database for evolutionary analysis of overlapping genes
Kim, Dae-Soo,Cho, Chi-Young,Huh, Jae-Won,Kim, Heui-Soo,Cho, Hwan-Gue Oxford University Press 2009 Nucleic acids research Vol.37 No.1
<P>Overlapping genes are defined as a pair of genes whose transcripts are overlapped. Recently, many cases of overlapped genes have been investigated in various eukaryotic organisms; however, their origin and transcriptional control mechanism has not yet been clearly determined. In this study, we implemented evolutionary visualizer for overlapping genes (EVOG), a Web-based DB with a novel visualization interface, to investigate the evolutionary relationship between overlapping genes. Using this technique, we collected and analyzed all overlapping genes in human, chimpanzee, orangutan, marmoset, rhesus, cow, dog, mouse, rat, chicken, Xenopus, zebrafish and Drosophila. This integrated database provides a manually curated database that displays the evolutionary features of overlapping genes. The EVOG DB components included a number of overlapping genes (10‱074 in human, 10 ‱009 in chimpanzee, 67 ‱039 in orangutan, 51 001 in marmoset, 219 in rhesus, 3627 in cow, 209 in dog, 10 ‱700 in mouse, 7987 in rat, 1439 in chicken, 597 in Xenopus, 2457 in zebrafish and 4115 in Drosophila). The EVOG database is very effective and easy to use for the analysis of the evolutionary process of overlapping genes when comparing different species. Therefore, EVOG could potentially be used as the main tool to investigate the evolution of the human genome in relation to disease by comparing the expression profiles of overlapping genes.
Vol.37 No.4
Using a gravity equation, this study examines the Linder hypothesis in agricultural trade. Rather than utilizing per capita income similarity generally used in this area, we used the climatic similarity as a proxy variable of the similarity of demand structure between countries. To examine the issue, imports data from 39 countries regarding fruits and 36 countries regarding vegetables from 1999 to 2008 to Korean market was used. This study finds that strong statistical evidence of the climatic similarity increases the agricultural trade between countries, which could be considered as evidence of the Linder hypothesis explaining agricultural trade.
