<P>In this paper, we present KULEX-hand, a novel underactuated hand exoskeleton for grasping power assistance for patients having a partially paralyzed hand or the elderly with weakened muscle strength. This mechanism consists of an underactuated finger for grasp motion generation, a spherical four-bar linkage for power transmission, and a passive thumb link with a flexure hinge structure. Based on the natural closing motion of the human index finger, the motion generation linkage was synthesized as a planar five-bar in which two input links were coupled with a four-bar linkage. Therefore, after contact occurs on the proximal link, the synthesized linkage can mimic the grasping motion of the human middle and distal phalanges. The kinetoelastic relation of the underactuated finger was derived using the theory of screws. Based on this relation, guidelines were proposed for selecting the springs for achieving a stable pinch grasp. A prototype was designed, and the naturalness of motion was evaluated from an experiment with five subjects.</P>

This paper presents characteristics of soil ionization when high currents such as lightning and switching surge currents are injected into a grounding rod. Soil ionization phenomena are investigated by using both voltage and current signals recorded by oscilloscope. As a result, a critical electric field intensity(Ec) for ionization is decreased with reduction of grain size. The pre-ionization resistance(R₁) and post-ionization resistance(R₂) at the sand with fine grain size are getting lower with increasing current magnitude. Finally, the time to ionization(t₁) and ionization current peak(t₂) of fine grain size are significantly shorter than those of medium grain size.

This study aims to understand physical therapists` consciousness of their later life preparation and their actual preparation for later life. Also this study alms to find the relation between their consciousness of later life preparation and their actual preparation for later life. The subjects of this study are 220 physical therapists working for rehabilitation treatment centers of thirty medical institutions located in the area of Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongbuk Province. The results of this study are as follows. In general, physical therapists were less prepared for later life than they were conscious of later life preparation. The subjects who worked for general hospitals showed a high level of consciousness of later life preparation, and those who worked for small clinics and were highly satisfied with their jobs were also found to be well prepared for later life. Therefore, security of their employment can be said to raise the level of preparing for later life.

To understand the mechanism of transcriptional regulation, it is essential to detect promoters and regulatory elements. Various kinds of methods have been introduced to improve the prediction accuracy of regulatory elements. Since there are few experimentally validated regulatory elements, previous studies have used criteria based solely on the level of scores over background sequences. However, selecting the detection criteria for different prediction methods is not feasible. Here, we studied the calibration of thresholds to improve regulatory element prediction. We predicted a regulatory element using MATCH, which is a powerful tool for transcription factor binding site (TFBS) detection. To increase the prediction accuracy, we used a regulatory potential (RP) score measuring the similarity of patterns in alignments to those in known regulatory regions. Next, we calibrated the thresholds to find relevant scores, increasing the true positives while decreasing possible false positives. By applying various thresholds, we compared predicted regulatory elements with validated regulatory elements from the Open Regulatory Annotation (ORegAnno) database. The predicted regulators by the selected threshold were validated through enrichment analysis of muscle-specific gene sets from the Tissue-Specific Transcripts and Genes (T-STAG) database. We found 14 known muscle-specific regulators with a less than a 5% false discovery rate (FDR) in a single TFBS analysis, as well as known transcription factor combinations in our combinatorial TFBS analysis.

The yeast s. cerevisiae transformed with yeast expression vector (pMGGalphaH) produce HBsAg consistently, vHBsAg was purified form this yeast and formulated into the yeast derived hepatitis B vaccine. In this article, we conducted several studies on the characteristics of yHBsAg and on the immunogenecity of yeast-derived hepatitis B vaccine. The results are summarized as follows. 1) The physico-chemical characteristics of purified yHBsAg checked by electron microscopic observation, ultraviolet absorption analysis and ultracentrifugational analysis were as same those of hGHs Ag. 2) The purity of purified yHBsAg checked by SDS-PAGE and HPLC was above 98% and antigenecity checked by immunodiffusion test was same as hHBsAg. 3) The immunogenecity of yeast derived hepatitis B vaccine was identical to that of plasma-derived HB vaccine in mice and guinea pigs. ED50% of yeast HB vaccine in mice was 0.3125㎍/㎖. 4) Seroconversion rate of volunteers vaccinated with 20㎍/dose of yeast-derived HB vaccine was 32.8% at month after first injection, 64.1% at 2 months, 91.5% at 6 months and 98.4% at 7 months. The result of this studies indicate that yeast-derived hepatitis B vaccine developed at Mogam Biotechnology Research Institute is safe and immunogenic for man
