Qurratulain Hyder is a major stalwart of the new generation of Urdu fiction writers. In her book Naya Afsana, she discusses psychologized realism wherein the past gives way to the present. She also depicts how a human being becomes a representation of the collective past via writings of his/her community’s collective past. Blurring every possible binary of past/present, home/world, private/public, Hyder’s neo-historical writings not only expose the limitation of her fictional world but also give it a new dimension, unlike contemporary writers who choose to focus on the external realities of the existential crisis of humanity during the early part of the twentieth century. She shows her skill by uncovering the internal realities of human experience. While giving her narratives a historical grounding, she has also made a sensorial reading of the holocaust in her narratives by focusing on the psychological interiors of affected human beings. The full order robust unknown input observers for continuous systems are presented. The observers are designed for both linear and nonlinear systems considering both noise and uncertainties. First, an unknown input observer is designed for linear systems. The observer is derived based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Then the observer design problem is extended for a class of nonlinear systems whose nonlinear function satisfies the Lipschitz condition. The main advantage of these observers over the existing works on UIO design is that these can handle both noise and uncertainties simultaneously. The performance of the observers is demonstrated by applying it to the robust state estimation of single link robot arm.

Here, we report that B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) is a novel target molecule of aspirin in breast cancer cells. Aspirin influenced the formation of a complex by Bcl-2 and FKBP38 and induced the nuclear translocation of Bcl-2 and its phosphorylation. These events inhibited cancer cell proliferation and subsequently enhanced MCF-7 breast cancer cell apoptosis. Bcl-2knockdown using small interfering RNA (siRNA) delayed apoptotic cell death, which correlated with increased proliferation following aspirin exposure. In contrast, Bcl-2 overexpression enhanced the onset of aspirin-induced apoptosis, which was also associated with a significant increase in Bcl-2 phosphorylation in the nucleus. Therefore, this study may provide novel insight into the molecular mechanism of aspirin, particularly its anticancer effects in Bcl-2- and estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells.

The defatted methanol extract of bark of Diospyros malabarica (DM) at doses of 200 and 400 mg/ kg, p.o. showed significant hypoglycemic activity on normal rats. The extract also exerted significant antihyperglycemic effect in alloxan-induced hyperglycemia and resulted in increase in plasma protein content and decrease in alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol and triglyceride levels when compared with those in the diabetic control group. However there were no significant changes in body and kidney weights of the DM extract-treated animals, compared to those of the untreated diabetic rats as a control. However, the DM extract showed a potential antioxidant activity by increasing catalase activity and reducing lipid peroxidation in liver. The results demonstrate antidiabetic activity of the defatted methanol extract of DM bark. <P>Targeting specific molecules is a promising cancer treatment because certain types of cancer cells are dependent on specific oncogenes. This strategy led to the development of therapeutics that use monoclonal antibodies or small-molecule inhibitors. However, the continued development of novel molecular targeting inhibitors is required to target the various oncogenes associated with the diverse types and stages of cancer. Obtusilactone B is a butanolide derivative purified from Machilus thunbergii. In this study, we show that obtusilactone B functions as a small-molecule inhibitor that causes abnormal nuclear envelope dynamics and inhibits growth by suppressing vaccinia-related kinase 1 (VRK1)-mediated phosphorylation of barrier-to-autointegration factor (BAF). BAF is important in maintaining lamin integrity, which is closely associated with diseases that include cancer. Specific binding of obtusilactone B to BAF suppressed VRK1-mediated BAF phosphorylation and the subsequent dissociation of the nuclear envelope from DNA that allows cells to progress through the cell cycle. Obtusilactone B potently induced tumor cell death in vitro, indicating that specific targeting of BAF to block cell cycle progression can be an effective anticancer strategy. Our results demonstrate that targeting a major constituent of the nuclear envelope may be a novel and promising alternative approach to cancer treatment.</P>
