Pathogenic infection in tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury is common and there is a breed specific response regarding tolerance. Hence, the tolerance level of three eco-races of tasar silkworm viz. Daba, Sarihan and Raily to Antheraea mylitta cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (AmCPV) infection was tested. The survival of Daba, Sarihan and Raily eco-races was significantly different (p<0.05) when challenged with the same concentration (1 x 10(5) polyhedra/ml) of AmCPV. Daba eco-race was more tolerant to the AmCPV infection having higher survival (65.7%) and LC50 values (1000893.17 polyhedra/ml) of AmCPV followed by Sarihan eco-race (50.7% survival and LC50 value of AmCPV 187203.6168 polyhedra/ml) and Raily ecorace (24.3% survival and LC50 value of AmCPV 5176.37 polyhedra/ml). The tolerance level of Daba and Sarihan eco-races against AmCPV was more than two times than Raily eco-race.

<P>Eu2+ and Mn2+ co-doped BaMgAl10O17 phosphor has been prepared by a solution combustion method. The structural, morphological and compositional analysis of the BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ and Mn2+ powders have been studied by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum exhibited resonance signals with the effective g values of g a parts per thousand 4.88 and g a parts per thousand 1.98. The resonance signal with the effective g value of g a parts per thousand 4.88 is characteristic of Eu2+ ions whereas g a parts per thousand 1.98 is due to Mn2+ ions. The number of spins participating in resonance, Gibbs free energy, magnetic susceptibility, Curie constant, effective magnetic moment, zero-field splitting parameter and hyperfine splitting constant have been evaluated. From optical and EPR correlation, it is inferred that Eu2+ and Mn2+ are present in the BaMgAl10O17 matrix.</P>

<P>Fe doped CeO2 powder was prepared using solution combustion method. Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy methods are used to characterize the combustion derived powder. The optical absorption spectrum exhibits three bands due to Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum of this sample exhibits number of resonance signals due to Fe3+ ions. The number of spins (N) participating in resonance and its paramagnetic susceptibility (chi) has been evaluated. From EPR and optical studies it is observed that iron ions are present in trivalent state.</P>

<P>Gallium garnets of lanthanides are multifunctional materials especially known for their complicated structure and magnetic properties. In addition, with a suitable transition metal dopant ion, these matrices have been proved to be excellent materials for lasers. In particular, gallium garnet of ytterbium (Yb3Ga5O12) is known to possess excellent properties with regards to these applications. In this connection, Yb3Ga5O12 doped with Cr3+ nanophosphors were synthesized by a solution combustion route. The synthesized material was characterized by powder x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy for phase purity and homogenous morphology. In order to ascertain the oxidation state of the doped ion, diffuse reflectance (DRF), photoluminescence (PL) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments were performed on the sample. The DRF and PL data suggested the stabilisation of the trivalent Cr ion in the matrix. The EPR spectra exhibited two resonance signals with effective g values at g approximate to 7.6 and 4. The EPR data corroborated the DRF and PL results, suggesting the stabilisation of Cr3+ in the matrix at octahedral-type geometries.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>:Gd<SUP>3+</SUP> phosphor was prepared using single step urea combustion method. The prepared phosphor was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques. The formation of the combustion products was confirmed by the XRD analysis. PL studies showed that the Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>:Gd<SUP>3+</SUP> phosphor could be excited at 273/276 nm, while an ultraviolet (UV) emission centered at ∼ 314/317 nm was exhibited. The EPR spectrum of sample exhibited resonance signals due to Gd<SUP>3+</SUP> ion at low symmetry sites in the host lattice. Both PL as well as EPR studies of the sample confirmed the presence of Gd<SUP>3+</SUP> in the Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> matrix.</P>

<P>Manganese doped BaMgAl10O17 nano-phosphors were synthesized by a low-temperature initiated, gas producing solution combustion process. Phase purity of the prepared phosphors was determined using X-ray diffraction technique. Dynamic light scattering technique was used to estimate the average particle size of the synthesized products. Scanning electron microscopy technique was used to study the morphology of the prepared samples. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to ascertain the formation of the aluminate host. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy showed band maxima at around 260 nm and intense band maxima at around 216 nm. Electron paramagnetic resonance experiments for the system were carried out to understand the site occupancy of the Mn ions. The photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra suggested the stabilisation of Mn ions in Td geometry. From the colour characterisation of the system it was found out that the system can be effective as a green phosphor material with wide range of applications.</P>

The conventional methods for diagnosis of tubercular lymphadenitis (TBLN) such as - fine needle aspiration cytology, Ziehl-Neelsen staining and culture have limitations of low sensitivity and/or specificity. So, it becomes essential to develop a rapid, sensitive, and specific method for an early diagnosis of TBLN. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate nested multiplex polymerase chain reaction (nMPCR) targeting MTP40 and IS6110 gene sequences of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, respectively in 48 successive patients of TBLN and 20 random patients with non-tubercular lymph node lesions. Out of the 48 cases of TBLN, 14 (29.2%) were found to be positive by Ziehl-Neelsen staining, 15 (31.2%) were positive by culture and 43 (89.6%) cases were positive after first round of PCR while 48 (100%) cases were positive by nMPCR assay. The sensitivity and specificity of nMPCR was found to be 100% for the diagnosis of TBLN. The results thus obtained indicate that nMPCR assay is a highly sensitive and specific tool for the diagnosis of TBLN.
