Improvement of Reality on Input Device for Virtual Walk System

In these days, elderly population is increasing in Japan. Demands on rehabilitation works might be larger as the old increase. In the authors’ laboratory, the Virtual Walk System has been designed and implemented. The system is intended to aid rehabilitation works with the Virtual Reality technology. Using commercially?supplied products, the proposed system is easy to be introduced to home with low costs and without occupying large space compared to the other rehabilitation systems introduced in the hospital. The present system supports a bicycle and a stepper, which enable cycling and walking exercises and moving in the virtual space.However, the conventional bicycle system didn’t support an operation to move right and left in the virtual space with its handlebar. Instead of operating it directly, users should operate a couple of switches mounted on the handlebar to move right and left. This has caused the unreality of using bicycle. In this study, the authors have improved a bicycle to enable an operation with a handlebar to move right and left in virtual space.

The electric power is in dispensable and its stable supply is always expected. A stable supply needs the real?time observation of load conditions by measurement of power factor. In addition, the various faults have been caused from the harmonic voltage and current. In the authors’ laboratory, the sensor, which simultaneously measures both the wave forms of the voltage and current without contacting the conductors in the three?phase power distribution system directly, has been designed and implemented. Using the sensor, we will observe the power factor and harmonics from the measured wave forms of voltage and current in power distribution line. However, the experimental sensor was designed to be applied to the 6.6kV power distribution system in the dielectric strength. The authors will propose the sensor for the 22kV power distribution system and investigate the output characteristics of this new sensor from numerical results based on the finite element method.
Performance Evaluations of PC Clusters for Large Scale Numerical Analyses

The PC cluster is a system that is connected two or more PC on the network and uses them as one parallel computer. Conventional numerical analyses can be executed comparatively low?ost by using PC cluster. In the authors’ laboratory, the PC cluster has been constructed. The author has made a finite element analysis parallel program and evaluated it. However, there is a possibility that the performance of the PC cluster will depend on clustering software. In addition, it has become able to build a higher?erformance cluster more cheaply by the rapid progress of hardware performance. Therefore the authors have constructed the PC cluster newly using two kinds of clustering software on Windows and Linux and compared both of them. Ten PCs which equipped dual core CPU were used for PC cluster. The HPL benchmark test for the present cluster system has been conducted to evaluate the performance. As a result, the processing speed has not improved in Windows but it has improved well in Linux.
