        Visual Outcomes, Patient Satisfaction and Spectacle Independence with a Trifocal Diffractive Intraocular Lens

        Purpose: To evaluate visual outcomes following implantation of a trifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) and toanalyze their correlation with patient satisfaction and ease of performing daily tasks. Methods: This was a prospective study enrolling 100 eyes of 50 patients undergoing cataract surgery with implantationof trifocal IOL AT LISA tri 839MP. Visual and refractive outcomes were evaluated during a 3-monthfollow-up. Postoperatively, a questionnaire was used to evaluate patient satisfaction with regard to surgicaloutcome, spectacle independence, perception of photic phenomena, and ease of performing some vision-relatedactivities. Results: A total of 91%, 87%, and 79% of eyes achieved a monocular uncorrected distance, near, and intermediatevisual acuity of 0.1 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution or better, respectively. After the surgery,96% of the patients could perform their daily activities without problems. The mean spectacle independencescores for reading, doing computer work, and for distance were 10.33 ± 12.47, 5.71 ± 11.90, and 3.92 ± 9.77,respectively (scale: 0 = no spectacles needed; 40 = spectacles always needed). No correlation was foundbetween spectacle independence and visual outcome (-0.101 ≤ r ≤ 0.244, p ≥ 0.087). Mean scores (0 = nosymptoms; 40 = strong symptoms) for glare at night, ghost images, and halos were 15.15 ± 12.02, 4.49 ± 7.92,and 13.34 ± 10.82, respectively. No correlation was found between photic phenomena and visual outcome(-0.199 ≤ r ≤ 0.209, p ≥ 0.150). A total of 80% of patients reported satisfaction with the surgery outcome, and86% would recommend the surgery to friends and family. Conclusions: Implantation of the AT LISA tri 839MP IOL after cataract surgery provides effective visual restorationassociated with a minimal level of photic phenomena, a positive impact on the performance of vision-relateddaily activities, and a high level of postoperative patient satisfaction.

        Advanced dual fluidized bed steam gasification of wood and lignite with calcite as bed material

        This paper presents experimental results with a new generation of a 100 kWth dual fluidized bed steam gasification pilot plant with calcite as bed material, converting wood and lignite in separate test runs into product gas. The results are compared to experiments with the same fuels with olivine as bed material and the previous generation of the gasification pilot plant at TU Wien. The highly catalytic active calcium oxide shifted the product gas composition towards higher hydrogen and carbon dioxide and lower carbon monoxide content. The tar amount was decreased and the tar composition changed, resulting in lower tar dew points. The dust content in the product gas was reduced with the advanced pilot plant design with calcite in comparison to the classic design with olivine. Therefore, attrition of bed material was decreased by utilizing the advanced design and calcite with its benefits can be used without profuse continuous replacement of bed material.

        A Study of On-body User Interface: PiAM(Palm interAction Module)

        User interface providing easy and efficient control environments with user is emerging as a core keyword in ICT market and smart phone industry as the influence and importance of UI has increased recently. To succeed in ICT market, however, UI has to satisfy industrial requirements including simple and easy control, intuitional access and high recognition. Thus study for providing user-friendly interface has been actively researched. In this paper, we investigate user interface based on human’s body such as palm, hand. Human body can be a good candidate as an UI because not only further concentration is not required but also it can be controlled directly. First, we analyze the usability of existing various user interfaces, then we study for obstacles to be solved and provide the direction of user interface to be evolved. As a candidate of on-body based user interface, we design, implement UI prototype system, named as PiAM and applied to smart TV service to provide easy and direct manipulation environment. Also for the realization of PiAM prototype system, detailed procedures to recognize input of hand and finger is described for touch and continuous events using palm.

        Na<sup>+</sup> Transport by the A<sub>1</sub>A<sub>O</sub>-ATP Synthase Purified from <i>Thermococcus onnurineus</i> and Reconstituted into Liposomes

        <P>The ATP synthase of many archaea has the conserved sodium ion binding motif in its rotor subunit, implying that these A(1)A(O)-ATP synthases use Na+ as coupling ion. However, this has never been experimentally verified with a purified system. To experimentally address the nature of the coupling ion, we have purified the A(1)A(O)-ATP synthase from T. onnurineus. It contains nine subunits that are functionally coupled. The enzyme hydrolyzed ATP, CTP, GTP, UTP, and ITP with nearly identical activities of around 40 units/mg of protein and was active over a wide pH range with maximal activity at pH 7. Noteworthy was the temperature profile. ATP hydrolysis was maximal at 80 degrees C and still retained an activity of 2.5 units/mg of protein at 45 degrees C. The high activity of the enzyme at 45 degrees C opened, for the first time, a way to directly measure ion transport in an A(1)A(O)-ATP synthase. Therefore, the enzyme was reconstituted into liposomes generated from Escherichia coli lipids. These proteoliposomes were still active at 45 degrees C. and coupled ATP hydrolysis to primary and electrogenic Na+ transport. This is the first proof of Na+ transport by an A(1)A(O)-ATP synthase and these findings are discussed in light of the distribution of the sodium ion binding motif in archaea and the role of Na+ in the bioenergetics of archaea.</P>

      • Energy conservation by oxidation of formate to carbon dioxide and hydrogen via a sodium ion current in a hyperthermophilic archaeon

        <P><I>Thermococcus onnurineus</I> NA1 is known to grow by the anaerobic oxidation of formate to CO<SUB>2</SUB> and H<SUB>2</SUB>, a reaction that operates near thermodynamic equilibrium. Here we demonstrate that this reaction is coupled to ATP synthesis by a transmembrane ion current. Formate oxidation leads to H<SUP>+</SUP> translocation across the cytoplasmic membrane that then drives Na<SUP>+</SUP> translocation. The ion-translocating electron transfer system is rather simple, consisting of only a formate dehydrogenase module, a membrane-bound hydrogenase module, and a multisubunit Na<SUP>+</SUP>/H<SUP>+</SUP> antiporter module. The electrochemical Na<SUP>+</SUP> gradient established then drives ATP synthesis. These data give a mechanistic explanation for chemiosmotic energy conservation coupled to formate oxidation to CO<SUB>2</SUB> and H<SUB>2</SUB>. Because it is discussed that the membrane-bound hydrogenase with the Na<SUP>+</SUP>/H<SUP>+</SUP> antiporter module are ancestors of complex I of mitochondrial and bacterial electron transport these data also shed light on the evolution of ion transport in complex I-like electron transport chains.</P>
