        탈냉전과 금문학 -형성, 성과, 과제

        20세기에 동아시아의 냉전사에서 가장 격렬한 ‘냉전의 섬’이었던 금문도에 대한 학문적 관심은 1992년 계엄령 해제 이후 커지기 시작하여 근래에는 독자적인 연구영역으로서의 금문학을 형성하기에 이르렀다. 이 글은 금문학이 형성되는 과정과 연구주체, 그리고 주요성과를 검토함으로써 금문학을 체계적으로 이해하고 앞으로의 연구방향을 모색하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위하여 중국 및 대만, 그리고 금문도내에서의 연구주체들을 리뷰하고 민남문화와 이민네트워크, 그리고 냉전과 탈냉전의 경험이 금문학을 구성하는 주요 주제임을 밝히고자 한다. 아울러 정치적으로는 대만에 속하면서 문화적으로는 민남지역에 속하는 금문도 주민들의 정체성에 관한연구가 앞으로의 중요한 과제임을 보여주려고 한다. Kinmen is known as the ‘Cold War Island’, because the most fierce battle of the 20th century Cold War history has happened here. Academically, the concerns of Kinmen research began after the lifting of Martial Law in 1992. In recent years, Kinmen research becomes an independent issue. This study reviews the formation, research topics, and achievements of Kinmen research. I try to understand Kinmen research more specifically and explore future direction. By comparing the research institutions in China, Taiwan and Kinmen, this study sorts out three main constituent parts of Kinmen research, including Minnan Culture, overseas Chinese period, and clod war period and post-clod war period. Kinmen politically belongs to Taiwan, but culturally belongs to Minnan area, so this study finds out an important future topic regarding Kinmen residents’ identity problem.

        금문도 냉전생태의 형성과 해체

        동아시아 냉전-분단체제는 매우 독특한 경계선을 가지고 있었다. 한국의 DMZ 와 서해5도의 NLL에 상응하는 중국과 대만의 경계는 대만의 마조도 및 금문도가 중국 대륙과 마주하고 있는 해안이다. 이 지역들은 냉전체제하에서 극단적 대치를 시각적으로 보여주는 독특한 경관과 생태를 만들어왔다. 이 글은 자유진영의 최전선이었던 금문도에서 어떻게 냉전생태가 형성되었고, 탈냉전과 더불어 해체 되어가는지를 보여준다. 금문도의 경관은 방어형 냉전생태에 속하는 것으로, 그것을 만들어낸 핵심적 요소는 지뢰매설이었다. 금문도의 주민들은 오랫동안 냉전생태에 적응하면서 살아왔다. 탈냉전과 함께 시작된 금문도의 지뢰제거 프로젝트는 소금문도에 있는 용사보와 철한보라는 토치카를 활용한 지뢰박물관 설립으로 귀착되었다. 이것은 동아시아 최초의 지뢰박물관으로, 금문도 전장관광의 특징을 보여주는 항목이다. 이 글은 주민들의 지뢰에 대한 인식과 태도, 그리고 지방정부의 지뢰제거를 위한 노력들을 살펴보고, 최근에 만들어진 소금문도의 지뢰박물관을 전장관광 (battlefield tourism)이라는 맥락에서 분석한다. The East Asia Cold War·division regime have some sensitive boundaries as Korea’s DMZ, West Sea’s NLL, and Mazu and Kinmen lines between mainland China and Taiwan. These areas created a unique landscape and ecology by showing the extreme confrontation visually under the Cold War. This study showed the gradual process of Kinmen’s Cold war landscape and ecology, as the front line of defense for Taiwan, and the appropriation of it based on the battlefield tourism. Kinmen’s landscape belonged to the Cold War ecology, in which the key elements was defined by buried landmines. In addition, this study explored how the local people lived with landmines, and the process of landmine clearance resulted in the seyablishment of the Museum of the Landmines. While the landmine clearance project was proceeding, the Kinmen local government and Lieyu Township Administration renovated two pillboxes, as a main body of the museum during 2010~2013. This shows the distinctive characteristic of Kinmen’s battlefield tourism. Kinmen’s battlefield tourism is based on the complex memories of the military and the inhabitants.

        Expression Patterns of Circular RNAs from Primary Kinase Transcripts in the Mammary Glands of Lactating Rats

        Purpose: Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a novel class of RNAs, perform important functions in biological processes. However, the role of circRNAs in the mammary gland remains unknown. The present study is aimed at identifying and characterizing the circRNAs expressed in the mammary gland of lactating rats. Methods: Deep sequencing of RNase R-enriched rat lactating mammary gland samples was performed and circRNAs were predicted using a previously reported computational pipeline. Gene ontology terms of circRNA-producing genes were also analyzed. Results: A total of 6,824 and 4,523 circRNAs were identified from rat mammary glands at two different lactation stages. Numerous circRNAs were specifically expressed at different lactation stages, and only 1,314 circRNAs were detected at both lactation stages. The majority of the candidate circRNAs map to noncoding intronic and intergenic regions. The results demonstrate a circular preference or specificity of some genes. DAVID analysis revealed an enrichment of protein kinases and related proteins among the set of genes encoding circRNAs. Interestingly, four protein-coding genes (Rev3l, IGSF11, MAML2, and LPP) that also transcribe high levels of circRNAs have been reported to be involved in cancer. Conclusion: Our findings provide the basis for comparison between breast cancer profiles and for selecting representative circRNA candidates for future functional characterization in breast development and breast cancer.

        Potential of a combination of entomopathogenic fungal strains and a non-ionic surfactant to control the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda)

        The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is an emerging invasive pest in Taiwan that feeds on a wide range of crops and causes serious damage. Herein, an entomopathogenic fungal library (EFLib) was constructed to identify potential microbes to control FAW. Twenty-eight indigenous entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) were iso lated and investigated for their potential pathogenicity, with Metarhizium pinghaense (Mp-NCHU-124) and Beauveria bassiana (Bb-NCHU-157) exerting dose-dependent effects on the 4th instar FAW larvae. The non-ionic surfactant Silwet L-77 rapidly killed FAW larvae after spraying at a concentration of 300 mg/kg and the toxic effect of Silwet L-77 on FAW larvae was dose-dependent. When the EPF isolates (10 6 conidia/mL) were applied to FAW larvae in combination with the non-ionic surfactant Silwet L-77 (30–90 mg/kg), the mortality rate dramatically increased and the LT 50 reduced, with increased fungal mycosis (Mp-NCHU-124: 38% to 72% and Bb-NCHU-157: 20 to 62%), indicating the high compatibility of EPF with the non-ionic surfactant. Thus, the Silwet L-77+EPF combined formulation has potential for practical field application for FAW pest control and sustainable agriculture in the future.

        A Proteomic Analysis of Leaf Responses to Enhanced Ultraviolet-B Radiation in Two Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Cultivars Differing in UV Sensitivity

        To determine the proteomic response to UV irradiation, two cultivars, i.e., Lemont (UV tolerant) and Dular (UV sensitive), were exposed to natural and enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiation for 1, 7, and 14 days, and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis in combination with mass spectrometry (MS) and bioinformatics were used to compare the different proteomic responses in the leaves of the two cultivars. Thirty-nine proteins were up- or downregulated following the UV-B treatments. Among them, 30 increased or decreased more than 1.5-fold in abundance. They were further tested by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight MS and performed a database search. Twentyfour proteins were thus identified. These identified proteins were mostly upregulated in Lemont, whereas only 14 of them upregulated in Dular. Nine proteins involved in glycometabolism and fatty acid metabolisms, signal transduction, and protein synthesis and folding in Dular were not changed. These results suggest that there was a complex regulative mechanism on the proteomes in rice leaves upon UV-B exposure.

        Impact of Obesity on a Chinese Population with Erosive Esophagitis and Barrett`s Esophagus

        Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between obesity and erosive esophagitis (EE) or Barrett`s esophagus (BE) in a Chinese population. Methods: Data from subjects were retrospectively collected from 2006 to 2009. Individuals with BE were identified and age- and sex-matched at a 1:2 ratio with normal esophagocardial junction and EE patients. The subjects were stratified into two groups: the normal weight group and overweight/ obesity group (body mass index ≥25 mg/m2) or the normal waist group and abdominal obesity group (waist circumference ≥90 cm for men and ≥80 cm for women). Results: Overall, 45%, 72%, and 52% were overweight/obese and 23%, 65%, and 18% had abdominal obesity in the normal, EE, and BE groups, respectively. Positive associations were identified between EE and overweight/obesity (odds ratio [OR], 3.14; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.75 to 5.66) and abdominal obesity (OR, 6.22; 95% CI, 3.34 to 11.57); however, the associations were nonsignificant between BE and overweight/obesity (OR, 1.32; 95% CI, 0.67 to 2.61) or abdominal obesity (OR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.31 to 1.73). Female BE patients had a significantly increased rate of being overweight/obese. Conclusions: Obesity is a contributing factor in EE. The association of BE and obesity was not significant, with the exception of female BE cases. (Gut Liver 2017;11:377-382)

        Flavones from the Bark of Lindera caudata and Their Anti-Tobacco Mosaic Virus Activity

        Two new flavones, 5-hydroxy-8-hydroxymethyl-7,4′-dimethoxy-flavone (1) and 6-hydroxy-8-hydroxymethyl-7,4′-dimethoxy-flavone (2), together with six known flavones (3–8), were isolated from the bark of Lindera caudata. The structures of 1–8 were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including extensive 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Compounds 1–8 were evaluated for their anti-tobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activity. The results showed that Compounds 1 and 2 showed high anti-TMV activity with inhibition rates of 31.2 and 28.8%, respectively. These values are close to those of positive control.

      • Transition over 35 Years in the Incidence Rates of Primary Central Nervous System Tumors in Shanghai, China and Histological Subtyping Based on a Single Center Experience Spanning 60 Years

        Background: Only few epidemiological data on primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors in Shanghai have been reported. Methods: All cases of primary CNS tumors that were registered at Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were collected (1973-2007: urban Shanghai; 2003-2007: whole Shanghai city). Trends were analyzed using joinpoint analysis and rates were stratified by age, gender and region. Histological data were collected from both CDC and Huashan Hospital. Results: From 1973 to 2007, the five-year average incidence rate in urban Shanghai increased in both genders, especially in the elderly population. Joinpoint analysis showed the age-adjusted incidence rate for males increased first but then plateaued, whilst rates for females continued increasing over the 35 years. For the five-year status quo (2003-2007), rural had a higher age-adjusted incidence rate than urban populations, and females higher than males, especially those with advanced age. According to CDC (2003-2007) and Huashan Hospital (1951-2011), the two most common histological subtypes were neuroepithelial tumors (with male predominance) and meningiomas (with female predominance). Conclusions: In Shanghai, a steadily increased incidence rate of primary CNS tumors was observed in general, and in the elderly and female population in particular.

      • Impact of Peri-Operative Anemia and Blood Transfusions in Patients with Gastric Cancer Receiving Gastrectomy

        Background: Potential disadvantages of blood transfusion during curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer have been reported, and the role of peri-operative transfusions remains to be ascertained. Thus, the aim of our study was to survey its impact in patients with gastric cancer undergoinging gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: Clinical data of patients receiving curative gastrectomy at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital were obtained. Findings for pre-operative anemia states, pre-, peri- and post-operative transfusion of red blood cell (RBC) products as well as post-operative complication events were collected for univariate analysis. Results: A total of 116 patients with gastric cancer received gastrectomy at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital from 2011 to 2014. Both pre-operative and intra- and post-operative transfusion of RBC products were markedly associated with post-operative infectious events (OR: 3.70, 95% CI: 1.43-9.58, P=0.002; OR: 8.20, 95% CI: 3.11-22.62, P<0.001, respectively). In addition, peri- and post-operative RBC transfusion was significantly associated with prolonged hospital stay from admission to discharge (OR: 8.66, 95% CI: 1.73-83.00, P=0.002) and post-operative acute renal failure (OR: 19.69, 95% CI: 2.66-854.56, P<0.001). Also, the overall survival was seemingly decreased by peri-operative RBC transfusion in our gastric cancer cases (P=0.078). Conclusions: Our survey indicated that peri-operative RBC transfusion could increase the risk of infectious events and acute renal failure post curative gastrectomy as well as worsen the overall survival in gastric cancer cases. Hence, unnecessary blood transfusion before, during and after curative gastrectomy should be avoided in patients with gastric cancer.

        A meta-analysis of locus-based genome-wide association studies recently identified a relationship between AXIN1 and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Few studies of Asian populations, however, have reported such a genetic association. The influences of rs13337493, rs758033, and rs2361988, three PD-associated genetic variants of AXIN1, were investigated in the present study because AXIN1 is related to Wnt/β-catenin signaling.
