        Role Distribution in Insolvency Proceedings : Singapore

        Christopher Eng is a legal officer with the Insolvency and Public Trustee's Office in Singapore. He had practiced for a number of years in insolvency law in Singapore's largest law firm, M/s Rajah & Tahn. He is involved in a number of law reform initiatives including the Omnibus Insolvency Bill. He is also an associate lecturer at PSB Academy of Singapore. He has won the Bronze Award in 2005 at the prestigious International Institute of Insolvency for his outstanding research work in cross-border insolvency.

        Image-guided radiation therapy in lymphoma management

        Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) is a process of incorporating imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Positron emission tomography (PET), and ultrasound (US) during radiation therapy (RT) to improve treatment accuracy. It allows real-time or near real-time visualization of anatomical information to ensure that the target is in its position as planned. In addition, changes in tumor volume and location due to organ motion during treatment can be also compensated. IGRT has been gaining popularity and acceptance rapidly in RT over the past 10 years, and many published data have been reported on prostate, bladder, head and neck, and gastrointestinal cancers. However, the role of IGRT in lymphoma management is not well defined as there are only very limited published data currently available. The scope of this paper is to review the current use of IGRT in the management of lymphoma. The technical and clinical aspects of IGRT, lymphoma imaging studies, the current role of IGRT in lymphoma management and future directions will be discussed.

        The Acquisition of English Prepositions by L1 Chinese Speaker

        This study investigates the acquisition of English prepositions of location and direction by Malaysian Chinese ESL learners. It was conducted with the objective of finding out which of the two types of prepositions was more problematic to the L1 Chinese learners. The study also sought to investigate the effect of age and proficiency levels in English on the acquisition of the English prepositions of location and direction by these learners, Additionally, the study sets out to determine the extent to which the L1 Chinese learners have acquired the English prepositions of location and direction. This study involved three groups of Chinese ESL learners: elementary, intermediate and advanced. They were selected based on their age and their performance on a standardized proficiency test. The instrument used to collect data was a preposition test comprising 85 items. These items on prepositions of location and direction were randomly arranged in the tasks. The test required subjects to respond to multiple choice questions, match given sentences with appropriate prepositions, fill in blanks with the appropriate prepositions, judge given sentences to see if they are grammatical or ungrammatical and correct the ungrammatical sentence by providing the appropriate prepositions. The results indicate that age and proficiency levels of the learners made a sentence in the acquisition of English prepositions of location and direction. The older learners with higher proficiency levels seem to fare better than the younger and less proficient learners. The results suggest that the prepositions of location are slightly more problematic than prepositions of directions to the L1 Chinese learners. Our data also suggest that certain prepositions of each type are more problematic than others.

      • The Inhibitory Effect of Dimethylsulfoxide on the Synthesis of Muscle Specific Protein during Chick Embryonic Myoblast Differentiation

        계배 근세포를 분리하여 배양하면서 근세포 분화기간 동안 몇 가지 근특이 단백질들의 합성에 대한 dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)의 억제 양상을 검토하였다. 전기영동겔상의 각 단백질 성분들을 densitometer로 scanning한 결과 DMSO를 처리한 구와 무처리구간에 비슷한 분포를 보였으나 근특이단백질인 actin과 myosin의 상대적 양은 현저한 차이를 보였는데 이것은 근세포 분화기간 동안 총단백질의 합성이 DMSO를 처리한 세포에서 감소한 때문이라고 보여지며 그 결과 근세포 융합이 억제된 것이라고 생각된다. 그외에 아세틸콜린 수용체와 creatine phosphokinase도 또한 DMSO에 의하여 그 합성이 억제된 것을 볼 수 있었으며 배양액에서 DMSO를 제거 하였을 때 근세포 융합이나 총단백질 합성량 및 아세틸콜린 수용체의 합성은 다시 증가하였고 무처리 상태 가까이 회복되었다. The pattern of inhibition by DMSO on several muscle specific proteins synthesis during myogenesis was studied. The profiles of protein in densitometric scans on SDS-polyacrylamide electrophoresis gel showed similar pattern in DMSO treatment and untreatment. But the amount of actin and myosin in the densitometric peak was revealed significant difference. Therefore, it seemed to be that total protein synthesis during muscle cell differentiation was decreased in DMSO-arrested cells, and this resulted in inhibition of cell fusion phenotypically. The synthesis of other proteins, acetylcholicne receptor and creatine phosphokinase, was also decreased by DMSO. The inhibition of total protein and acetylcholine receptor by DMSO was reversed and cell fusion was restored nearly to control in 2-days after DMSO removal.

        Willingness to Communicate among Thai EFL Students : Does English Proficiency Matter?

        Willingness to communicate (WTC) is a key concept in English language learning and communication. The literature has shown that WTC in a non-native English speaking environment is influenced by a multiplicity of factors, one of which is English proficiency. However, findings on its effect on WTC have been inconclusive. Therefore, this study investigated whether there was a statistically significant difference in WTC levels among students with different English proficiency levels and the ability of proficiency to predict WTC. The participants were 375 twelfth-grade Thai EFL students from two Southern Thailand government secondary schools. They responded to an adapted WTC scale which had been translated into the Thai language. The one-way ANOVA followed by a Tukey HSD test were used to analyse significant differences, while a simple linear regression assessed the ability of proficiency to predict WTC inside and outside the classroom. The results revealed that there were statistically significant differences in WTC between low, moderate and high proficiency students. It was also found that English proficiency could predict students’ WTC inside and outside the English classroom, but it only accounted for a small percentage of the variance. Findings of the study have implications for English language teaching and WTC research.

        Inventing a Moral Crisis and the Singapore State

        This paper examines how the Singapore State views its citizenry as suffering from a moral crisis and the policies that it adopts in an attempt to avert this perceived crisis. There are four main areas where moral degeneration has supposedly occurred and all are linked to Singapore women. The main issues of state concern are: the failure of graduate women to marry; the single mother syndrome; Singapore women marrying Caucasian (known as the Pinkerton syndrome); and a decline in family values, reflected in the dilution of filial piety. This paper argues that the anxiety of the state in treating such social issues as moral crises reflects its desire to legitimize its position as an upholder of the ethical and moral basis of Singapore society.

        Improving Grammatical Accuracy in Thai Learners' Writing : Comparing Direct and Indirect Written Corrective Feedback

        Written corrective feedback (WCF) is widely used to point students to the grammatical errors in their written work and help reduce them. This paper reports a quasi-experimental study that compared the effectiveness of direct and indirect teacher WCF in a Thai context. One hundred and twenty Thai students at two public universities in southern Thailand were assigned to write argumentative essays within a treatment period; each treatment had 60 students. The feedback was given by four ESL/EFL lecturers at the two universities. Grammatical aspects focused on were tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, singular/plural nouns, prepositions and adjectives/adverbs. Means for the number of errors were obtained at three points, namely, pretest, immediate posttest and delayed posttest. The findings revealed that time and WCF type as main effects showed differentiated results on all six grammatical aspects. Interaction effects between time and WCF were found for tenses and subject-verb agreement. For between-subjects effects, indirect WCF was more effective than direct WCF. For within-subjects effects, generally the differences in the mean values were significant between pretest and delayed posttest, but not between pretest and immediate posttest. These findings have implications for writing instruction and research in an ESL/EFL tertiary context.
