Background/Aims: Left-sided diverticulitis is increasing in Japan, and many studies report that left-sided diverticulitis is more likely to be severe. Therefore, it is important to identify the features and risk factors for left-sided diverticulitis. We hypothesized that left-sided diverticulitis in Japan is related to obesity and conducted a study of the features and risk factors for this disorder in Japan. Methods: Right-sided di-verticulitis and left-sided diverticulitis patients (total of 215) were compared with respect to background, particularly obesity-related factors to identify risk factors for diverticulitis. Results: There were 166 (77.2%) right-sided diverticulitis patients and 49 (22.8%) left-sided diverticulitis patients. The proportions of obese patients (body mass index ≥25 kg/m2, p=0.0349), viscerally obese patients (visceral fat area ≥100 cm2, p=0.0019), patients of mean age (p=0.0003), and el-derly patients (age ≥65 years, p=0.0177) were significantly higher in the left-sided-diverticulitis group than in the right-sided-diverticulitis group. The proportion of viscerally obese patients was significantly higher in the left-sided-diverticulitis group than in the left-sided-diverticulosis group (p=0.0390). Conclusions: This study showed that obesity, particularly visceral obesity, was a risk factor for left-sided diverticulitis in Japan. (Gut Liver 2013;7:532-538)
Combustion of stratified charge propane-air mixture with swirling flow in a constant-volume vessel

Direct injection spark ignition engines can achieve better thermal efficiency by applying stratified fuel concentration in the combustion chamber. The purpose of this study is to clarify the combustion in such inhomogeneous fuel concentration field. The combustion of inhomogeneous fuel concentration field in a cylindrical constant volume vessel was fundamentally investigated axisymmetrically. A swirling fuel-air mixture was produced in the vessel. A rich fuel concentration was formed near the center of the vessel by the injection of propane. The mixture was ignited at the center of the vessel. The experimental runs were done under various conditions at fuel distribution and swirl flow at the ignition timing. The fuel concentration distribution at the ignition timing was measured using laser-induced fluorescence. The gas flow field was obtained with a laser Doppler velocimeter in advance. The pressure history in the combustion chamber was analyzed to determine the combustion characteristics. Furthermore, a high-speed video camera was used to capture the flame development. The flame can propagate and the combustion occurs even in an ultra lean mixture of equivalence ratio of 0.3 in total. As the fuel concentration near the spark location approximates stoichiometric, flame propagation of the initial stage of the combustion becomes faster under an ultra lean mixture condition.

Our daily action selection processes are guided by conscious and unconscious behaviors. Being able to measure these signals may provide a clue into how we make decisions and allow us to create better systems that can help us during these action selection processes. A flexible and easy to manufacture tool was needed to bootstrap the research in this field. Therefore, this paper presents the design and development of ‘My Daily Badge’, a wearable device for habitual behavioral tracking, that is easy to manufacture. We also introduce the Off-the-Shelf Adaptive Design process that led to the creation of this device. Finally, several test measurements are described, as well as potential classification algorithms that can aid researchers in the research of daily conscious and unconscious behavioral patterns. This research contributes toward the development of accessible bioinstrumentation tools that can help researchers in different scientific fields.
Structure-Zone Modeling of Sputter-Deposited Thin Films: A Brief Review
Eiji Kusano 한국진공학회 2019 Applied Science and Convergence Technology Vol.28 No.6
In this paper, the structure zone model (SZM) for sputter-deposited thin films is reviewed through a systematic discussion of the dependence of film structure and properties on the discharge pressure and homologous substrate temperature. The SZM is applicable to the sputter-deposited metal and metal oxide thin films with a film thickness ranging from a few to several hundred nanometers. Furthermore, the SZM is evolved for the sputter-deposition of films through energization of the sputtered particles by replacing the axis of the deposition pressure with that of the effective energy per depositing atom. The results suggest that the SZM is valid as a conceptual diagram with respect to optimizing film-deposition conditions for industrial applications.
