COVID-19 Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Laboratory Findings, Comorbidities, and Clinical Outcomes Comparing Medical Staff versus the General Population

Ebrahimi Mina,Malehi Amal Saki,Rahim Fakher 질병관리본부 2020 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.11 No.5

This review compared coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) laboratory findings, comorbidities, and clinical outcomes in patients from the general population versus medical staff to aid diagnosis of COVID-19 in a more timely, efficient, and accurate way. Electronic databases were searched up to 23rd March, 2020. The initial search yielded 6,527 studies. Following screening, 24 studies were included [18 studies (11,564 cases) of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the general public, and 6 studies (394 cases) in medical staff] in this review. Significant differences were observed in white blood cell counts (p < 0.001), lymphocyte counts (p < 0.001), platelet counts (p = 0.04), procalcitonin levels (p < 0.001), lactate dehydrogenase levels (p < 0.001), and creatinine levels (p = 0.03) when comparing infected medical staff with the general public. The mortality rate was higher in the general population than in medical staff (8% versus 2%). This review showed that during the early stages of COVID-19, laboratory findings alone may not be significant predictors of infection and may just accompany increasing C-reactive protein levels, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, and lactate dehydrogenase levels. In the symptomatic stage, the lymphocyte and platelet counts tended to decrease. Elevated D-dimer fibrin degradation product was associated with poor prognosis.

Effects of Two Herbal Extracts and Virginiamycin Supplementation on Growth Performance, Intestinal Microflora Population and Fatty Acid Composition in Broiler Chickens

Ramiah, Suriya Kumari,Zulkifli, Idrus,Rahim, Nordiana Asyikin Abdul,Ebrahimi, Mahdi,Meng, Goh Yong Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2014 Animal Bioscience Vol.27 No.3

The competency of garlic and pennywort to improve broiler chicken growth and influence intestinal microbial communities and fatty acid composition of breast meat were studied. Two hundred forty, "day-old" chicks were randomly allocated to 4 treatment groups consisting of 6 replications of 10 chicks in each pen. The groups were assigned to receive treatment diets as follows: i) basal diet (control), ii) basal diet plus 0.5% garlic powder (GP), iii) basal diet plus 0.5% pennywort powder (PW) and iv) 0.002% virginiamycin (VM). Birds were killed at day 42 and intestinal samples were collected to assess for Lactobacillus and Escherichia coli. The pectoralis profundus from chicken breast samples was obtained from 10 birds from each treatment group on day 42 and frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$ for further analyses. Fatty acid profile of breast muscles was determined using gas liquid chromatography. Feed intake and weight gain of broilers fed with GP, PW, and VM were significantly higher (p<0.05) compared to control. Feeding chicks GP, PW, and VM significantly reduced Escherichia coli count (p<0.05) while Lactobacillus spp count were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the gut when compared to control group on day 42. Supplemented diet containing pennywort increased the C18:3n-3 fatty acid composition of chickens' breast muscle. Garlic and pennywort may be useful in modulating broiler guts as they control the enteropathogens that help to utilize feed efficiently. This subsequently enhances the growth performances of broiler chickens.

Bioacoustics of Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae)

        Azizi Farsani Payam,Sakenian Dehkordi Nader,Ebrahimi Rahim,Nemati Alireza,Taghizadeh Dehkordi Maryam 한국응용곤충학회 2024 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.27 No.1

Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) is one of the major destructive pests of grain products in hot and dry parts of the world. No information has been made available on the bioacoustic signals (BASs) of T. granarium. In this paper, the bioacoustic features of this insect have measured from larvae and adult males and females. No anechoic chamber was used in this study. The extracted features were compared to evaluate the ability of the acoustic method to determine larva or adult as well as their sex. Adult males and females and larvae T. granarium produced BASs with a length of 2–11, 2–52, and 2–30 ms with a maximum sound pressure level of 3, 36, and 17 dB, respectively. At least 60 % of all BASs were in the ranges of 2–12 impulses in larva and adult stages. The sum of the total BASs was different in larvae and adult stages. Adult males had the least number of BASs compared to adult females and larvae. Detection of the growth stage and determination of the sex of the adult T. granarium by acoustic method in the time domain depends on the feature extracted from BASs and number of their impulses. Furthermore, in the frequency domain, the most dominant frequency bands were in the range of 1–8 kHz. In this band, the most dominant frequency band was 3.5–4.5 and 1–1.7 kHz for adult males and larvae, respectively. The most dominant bands of 1–3 and 4–5 kHz were observed for adult females.

Iranian Registry of Crohn’s and Colitis: study profile of first nation-wide inflammatory bowel disease registry in Middle East

        Masoud M Malekzadeh,Alireza Sima,Sudabeh Alatab,Anahita Sadeghi,Nasser Ebrahimi Daryani,Payman Adibi,Iradj Maleki,Hassan Vossoughinia,Hafez Fakheri,Abbas Yazdanbod,Seyed Alireza Taghavi,Rahim Aghazade 대한장연구학회 2019 Intestinal Research Vol.17 No.3

Background/Aims: A recent study revealed increasing incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Iran. The Iranian Registry of Crohn’s and Colitis (IRCC) was designed recently to answer the needs. We reported the design, methods of data collection, and aims of IRCC in this paper. Methods: IRCC is a multicenter prospective registry, which is established with collaboration of more than 100 gastroenterologists from different provinces of Iran. Minimum data set for IRCC was defined according to an international consensus on standard set of outcomes for IBD. A pilot feasibility study was performed on 553 IBD patients with a web-based questionnaire. The reliability of questionnaire evaluated by Cronbach’s α. Results: All sections of questionnaire had Cronbach’s α of more than 0.6. In pilot study, 312 of participants (56.4%) were male and mean age was 38 years (standard deviation=12.8) and 378 patients (68.35%) had ulcerative colitis, 303 subjects (54,7%) had college education and 358 patients (64.74%) were of Fars ethnicity. We found that 68 (12.3%), 44 (7.9%), and 13 (2.3%) of participants were smokers, hookah and opium users, respectively. History of appendectomy was reported in 58 of patients (10.48%). The most common medication was 5-aminosalicylate (94.39%). Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, IRCC is the first national IBD registry in the Middle East and could become a reliable infrastructure for national and international research on IBD. IRCC will improve the quality of care of IBD patients and provide national information for policy makers to better plan for controlling IBD in Iran.
