Korean Wave and Korean Women Television Viewers in Singapore
SHIM Doobo 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2007 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.13 No.2
Against the backdrop of cultural globalization and regionalization, this study theorizes on transnational television consumption and cultural flows within Asia by examining the ways in which women of the Korean diaspora enjoy homeland television drama while living in Singapore. It was found that Korean drama viewing provides these women with cultural resources to resist male dominance. In a word, they acquire semiotic power to produce resistive reading from the resources of the text. The Korean Wave phenomenon plays an interesting role in this. Moving the cultural industries' position upward in the Korean economy has allowed the expertise about Korean television drama to function as means of empowering women in familial power relations. It has also heightened their ethnic pride in their relations with other Asians. Articulated in these contexts, the Korean Wave produces new meanings and serves new cultural interests for women.
Transnational Koreans in Asian Pop Culture in the Pre-Korean Wave Era
Doobo Shim 한국언론학회 2020 Asian Communication Research Vol.17 No.3
The Korean Wave, which refers to the overseas popularity of South Korean culture, is moving toward a new stage of development. Seen in conjunction with the recent performances of K-pop bands on global music platforms, Korean film Parasites winning four prizes at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020 has led commentators to argue that the whole world is now observing the Korean Wave phenomena. However, while the global rise of Korean pop culture has been documented continuously, most of the research has been centered around either Korean production or foreign consumption. Additionally, while the transnationality of popular culture has led academia to adopt the theory of hybridity, its application to the Korean Wave was largely limited to textual studies. Against this backdrop, this research will shed light on diasporic Korean artistes who have been largely forgotten either in Korea or in their resettled and adopted cultures. In particular, this study will zero in on Korean actors and filmmakers in Shanghai in the 1930s and the Korean-Hong Kongese film collaborations in the 1960s and inquire into their cultural meanings in inter-Asian popular culture. For one, Korean director Jeong Chang-hwa handed down his action film know-how to Hong Kong cinema, which would later become a global action film hub. This relationship continued when the Hong Kong International Film Festival recognized Parasites director Bong Joon-hos talent on the international level first by screening his short films in 1994. As such, this research will also open up new avenues of understanding the history of East Asian popular culture.
The Development of Investigative Reporting in China
DOOBO SHIM,WANG YI 한국언론학회 2006 Asian Communication Research Vol.3 No.2
As China's economic reform is changing every aspect of the country, so is the mass media sector. China has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of commercial newspapers, and advertising has become a major revenue source for the Chinese media since the early 1990s. Media commercialization has provided an incentive and opportunity for journalists to cover lively stories with diverse topics, and expose political corruption, government inefficiency and social injustice (Lin, 2003). In this vein, many Chinese journalists hold investigative reporting, a muckraking genre of journalism that was introduced into China in the early 1990s, in high respect, and show desire for and passion in practicing it. Against this backdrop, we shall explore the reality of the pres freedom in China and Chinese journalists' understanding of the investigative journalism by doing a case study of the Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolitan Daily (Nanfang Dushi Bao, thereafter SMD), one of the most successful commercial newspapers in China with its reputation for the muckraking journalism.

This study examined the effects of green manure on the growth characteristics and weed control for tea trees in organic tea cultivation. The weed control, soil chemistry, SPAD value, and chlorophyll fluorescence were examined with five different treatments [Festuca myuros (FES), Astragalus sinicus (AST), Trifolium incarnatum (TRI), mixing sowing (Astragalus sinicus 1 + Trifolium incarnatum 2) and control]. The weed occurrence was 229 weeds of 13 flora (fresh weight 4,344 g, dry weight 745 g) in control; TRI treatment was the lowest, 14.7 weeds of 3.7 flora (fresh weight 18.0 g, dry weight 1.1 g). The mulching treatment groups showed a weed inhibition effect compared to the control (over 98%). Organic matter was lowest at 14.1 g/kg, but highest at 30.5 g/kg (2.2 times) in the TRI treatment. SPAD value and chlorophyll fluorescence of tea leaves were also highest in the TRI treatment (38.1, 41.9 Fv/Fm). Therefore, Trifolium incarnatum is considered the most effective when considering weed control, soil chemical properties, growth of tea trees, and convenience of work.
