Hydrodynamic pressures acting on the walls of rectangular fluid containers

        Dogangun, Adem,Livaoglu, Ramazan Techno-Press 2004 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.17 No.2

The dynamic response characteristics of a rectangular fluid container are investigated by using finite element method. The fluid is assumed to be linear-elastic, inviscid and compressible. A displacement-based fluid finite element was employed to allow for the effects of the fluid. A typical rectangular fluid container, which is used in recent studies, is considered for the numerical analysis. The North-South component of El Centro Earthquake records is used as input ground acceleration. Rigid and flexible fluid containers solutions are obtained for the chosen sample tank. Hydrodynamic pressures and sloshing motions are determined using Lagrangian fluid finite element. The results obtained from this study are compared with the results obtained by boundary-finite element method (BEM-FEM) and requirements of Eurocode-8. Based on the numerical analysis, some conclusions and discussions on the design considerations for rectangular fluid containers are presented.

Seismic evaluation of fluid-elevated tank-foundation/soil systems in frequency domain

        Livaoglu, R.,Dogangun, A. Techno-Press 2005 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.21 No.1

An efficient methodology is presented to evaluate the seismic behavior of a Fluid-Elevated Tank-Foundation/Soil system taking the embedment effects into accounts. The frequency-dependent cone model is used for considering the elevated tank-foundation/soil interaction and the equivalent spring-mass model given in the Eurocode-8 is used for fluid-elevated tank interaction. Both models are combined to obtain the seismic response of the systems considering the sloshing effects of the fluid and frequency-dependent properties of soil. The analysis is carried out in the frequency domain with a modal analysis procedure. The presented methodology with less computational efforts takes account of; the soil and fluid interactions, the material and radiation damping effects of the elastic half-space, and the embedment effects. Some conclusions may be summarized as follows; the sloshing response is not practically affected by the change of properties in stiff soil such as S1 and S2 and embedment but affected in soft soil. On the other hand, these responses are not affected by embedment in stiff soils but affected in soft soils.

Crack development depending on bond design for masonry walls under shear

        Ural, A.,Dogangun, A. Techno-Press 2012 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.44 No.2

Walls are the most important vertical load-carrying elements of masonry structures. Their bond designs are different from one country to another. This paper presents the shear effects of some structural bond designs commonly used for masonry walls. Six different bond designs are considered and modeled using finite element procedures under lateral loading to examine the shear behavior of masonry walls. To obtain accurate results, finite element models are assumed in the inelastic region. Crack development patterns for each wall are illustrated on deformed meshes, and the numerical results are compared.

Response evaluation of historical crooked minaret under wind and earthquake loadings

Ural, Ali,Dogangun, Adem,Meraki, Sakir Techno-Press 2013 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.17 No.3

Turkey has been hosted various civilizations throughout centuries and it has become one of the oldest settlements all over the world due to the geographical location. Therefore, it has accommodated innumerable historical structures remain from the past civilizations. Protection and conservation of these historical constructions should be the major points for continuity of history. Crooked minaret is one of between these historical invaluable structures. It is located at the city of Aksaray and it dates back approximately 800 years. The minaret has lost its vertical position in time and bends on the North-West direction. In this study, general information is given about minarets and some restoration recommendations are given for crooked minaret based on performed some finite element structural analyses. These analyses are considered into three cases; 1-Dead loading, 2-Wind loading, and 3-Earthquake loadings. Results from the analyses are discussed detailed and some useful recommendations are given in the end of the study.

Seismic Assessment of a Historical Masonry Mosque by Experimental Tests and Finite Element Analyses

        Ferit Cakir,Burcin S. Seker,Ahmet Durmus,Adem Dogangun,Habib Uysal 대한토목학회 2015 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.19 No.1

The mosques are the most important pieces of Islamic culture in terms of their architectural and structural properties. Although, thousands of these mosques are still being used all over the world, many historical mosques are at risk in terms of seismic events. This study mainly focuses on historical Lala Pasha Mosque, which is located in the city center of Erzurum, Turkey. The main purposeof this study is to assess the structural behaviors and to investigate the architectural features and components of the mosque. Thestudy was carried out in two main steps. Firstly, compression and three-point bending tests on the construction materials wereconducted to determine the mechanical properties of the materials. In the second step, a three-dimensional finite element model of themosque was developed and structural responses for the model were investigated by means of static and dynamic analyses. The resultsof the analyses show that the most critical parts of the mosque are the dome, pulley, and the supports of the main arch structures thatcarry the main dome. Additionally, the dynamic analyses prove that the most critical parts of the mosque are the sub-sections of themain columns, the window edges, and small domes.
