Photoproduction of thef1(1285)meson

        Dickson, R.,Schumacher, R. A.,Adhikari, K. P.,Akbar, Z.,Amaryan, M. J.,Anefalos Pereira, S.,Badui, R. A.,Ball, J.,Battaglieri, M.,Batourine, V.,Bedlinskiy, I.,Biselli, A.,Boiarinov, S.,Briscoe, W. J. American Physical Society 2016 Physical Review C Vol.93 No.6

The f(1)(1285) meson withmass 1281.0 +/- 0.8MeV/c(2) and width 18.4 +/- 1.4MeV (full width at half maximum) was measured for the first time in photoproduction from a proton target using CLAS at Jefferson Lab. Differential cross sections were obtained via the eta pi(+)pi(-), K+(K) over bar (0) pi(-), and (K-K0)pi(+) decay channels from threshold up to a center-of-mass energy of 2.8 GeV. The mass, width, and an amplitude analysis of the eta pi(+)pi(-) final-state Dalitz distribution are consistent with the axial-vector J(P) = 1(+) f(1)(1285) identity, rather than the pseudoscalar 0(-) eta(1295). The production mechanism is more consistent with s-channel decay of a high-mass N* state and not with t-channel meson exchange. Decays to eta pi pi go dominantly via the intermediate a(0)(+/-) (980)pi(-/+) states, with the branching ratio Gamma [a(0)pi (no (K) over barK)]/Gamma[eta pi pi (all)] = 0.74 +/- 0.09. The branching ratios Gamma (K (K) over bar pi)/Gamma(eta pi pi) = 0.216 +/- 0.033 and Gamma (gamma rho(0))/Gamma(eta pi pi) = 0.047 +/- 0.018 were also obtained. The first is in agreement with previous data for the f(1)(1285), while the latter is lower than the world average.

      • Optimal plant design for integrated biorefinery producing bioethanol and protein from Saccharina japonica: A superstructure-based approach

        Dickson, Rofice,Ryu, Jun-Hyung,Liu, J. Jay Elsevier 2018 ENERGY Vol.164 No.-

Abstract

A superstructure-based approach was proposed for optimization of biorefineries that use Saccharina japonica as feedstock. The goal of this study was to determine the optimal flowsheet design to maximize the net present value by considering the mass and energy balance, capital and manufacturing costs. Multiple design alternatives reported in the literature were considered at each biorefinery processing stage, which transformed the superstructure optimization into a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. In order to efficiently compute a solution for the resulting MINLP problem, the separable programming technique is employed by approximating the initial MINLP problem into a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. The results indicated that the minimum ethanol selling price for optimal design is $1.97/gal, whereas the net present value of $61.5 million is obtained based on the current wholesale prices for both products and raw materials. Sensitivity analysis was performed to identify potential for economic improvement. The developed framework has the capacity to efficiently scan through processing alternatives to identify an economically optimal design for different potential objective functions.

Highlights

A superstructure-based optimization model is developed.

Optimal flowsheet of macroalgae biorefinery are determined.

Two different optimization scenarios are investigated.

Sensitivity analysis elaborates potential improvements.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Terahertz Cyclotron Resonance in AlGaN/GaN Heterostructures

        Dickson Kindole,Yasutaka Imanaka,Kanji Takehana,Liwen Sang,Masatomo Sumiya 한국물리학회 2019 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.74 No.2

Cyclotron resonance (CR) in AlGaN/GaN two-dimensional electron system is investigated under high magnetic elds up to 15 T in order to study the magnetic eld dependence of the electron eective mass. Non-linear dependence of the CR energy against the magnetic eld is observed, indicating that the electron eective mass becomes heavier with increasing the magnetic eld. This is partially due to the contribution from the resonant polaron eect because GaN has a large electron-longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon interaction among III-V compounds. The magnetic eld dependence of the CR energy is explained well with the Frohlich polaron theory in the magnetic eld.

Simplex PCR Assay for Detection of blaTEM and gyrA Genes, Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern and Plasmid Profile of Salmonella spp. Isolated from Stool and Raw Meat Samples in Niger State, Nigeria

        Dickson A. Musa,Kolawole H. Aremu,Abraham Aayi,Stella I. Smith 한국미생물·생명공학회 2020 한국미생물·생명공학회지 Vol.48 No.2

The global evolution of antibiotic resistance has threatened the efficacy of available treatment options with ravaging impacts observed in developing countries. As a result, investigations into the prevalence of antibiotic resistance and the role of plasmids are crucial. In this study, we investigated the presence and distribution of blaTEM and gyrA genes, plasmid profiles, and the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Salmonella strains isolated from raw meat and stool sources across Niger State, Nigeria. Ninety-eight samples, comprising 72 raw meat and 26 stool samples, were screened for Salmonella spp. The antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella isolates to 10 commonly used antimicrobial agents was determined using the Kirby- Bauer disc diffusion method. Isolates were further analyzed for plasmids, in addition to PCR amplification of beta-lactamase (blaTEM) and gyrA genes. A total of 31 Salmonella spp. were isolated, with 22 from raw meat (70.97%) and 9 from stool (29.03%). Salmonella spp. with multiple resistance patterns to ceftazidime, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, erythromycin, ampicillin, cloxacillin, and gentamicin were detected. Ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were found to be the most effective among the antibiotics tested, with 67.7% and 93.5% susceptible isolates, respectively. Nine (29.03%) isolates harbored plasmids with molecular sizes ranging between 6557 bp and 23137 bp. PCR amplification of gyrA was detected in 1 (3.23%) of the 31 isolates while 28 isolates (90.32%) were positive for blaTEM. This study shows the incidence of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella isolates and the possible role of plasmids; it also highlights the prevalence of ampicillin resistance in this local population.

        ( Apraku Dickson ) 한국체육학회 2015 국제스포츠과학 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.1

Purpose: As a physical educator and also a handball coach, the problem of poor shooting ability among students in the game of handball with special reference to the jumpshot is and had been a major sickness. The researcher was therefore motivated to research into this problem so as to find solutions to the poor shooting skills of student more especially in the performance of the jumpshot skill which students finds very difficult to do. It is also expected that handball coaches who would be fortunate to come across this research work will find it educative and useful and it would in turn inform other interested parties on the better ways of performing the jumpshot. It is also hoped that the suggestions offered if implemented would help alleviate the problems of shooting in handball as well as the performance of the jumpshot. Method: The researcher used observation and performance assessment in designing the study. Individual students were also made to answer questions biased on structured interviews were also used the retrieve information to carry out this study. Data and relevant information were gathered through the use of observation and assessment. Structured interviews and unstructured interviews were employed in the study. Respondents were made to either make ‘Yes or ‘no’ choices in the structured interviews. With the structured interviews, students answered questions as they came to them. Results: Physical education, is the only aspect of education that deals with the following domains: affective, cognitive and psychomotor and has a broad range of influence and contribute significantly to major goals of education, and their thinking ability, self-realization, desirable human relationship, contribution to economic competitive civic responsibility and learning to learn. Conclusion: To sum up, sports contribute immensely to the whole some personality of the individual. It is in the light of this in September, 1987, the provisional National defense council (PNDC) government on implementing the Educational reform programme to restructure education in Ghana, gave due coordination to the united Nations Educational scientific and cultural Organization (UNESC) chapter an physical education to help contribute to the cognitive affective and psychomotor development of children in Ghana. The charter state among other things that every human being has a fundamental right of access to physical education and sports which are essential for the development of personality. The freedom to develop physical intellectual and moral powers through sports must be guarantee within the educational system and in the other aspects of social life.

Breaking the Culture-specific Silence of Women Glass Bead Makers in Ghana: Towards Empowerment

Adom, Dickson,Daitey, Samuel T.,Yarney, Lily,Fening, Peggy A. Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2020 Safety and health at work Vol.11 No.4

Background: The production of glass beads in Ghana is greatly impacted by the ingenuity of Ghanaian women. Preliminary investigations revealed the lack of interest on the part of women due to poor working conditions as a result of the influence of culture-specific silence. Therefore, the study investigated the poor working conditions faced by these industrious women with the ultimate goal of suggesting ways they can be empowered. Methods: A phenomenological study was conducted in two indigenous glass bead communities in Ghana. Data were solicited via direct observations, personal interviews and focus group discussions. Twenty-six purposively sampled respondents were recruited for the study. Data from the study were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results: The results confirmed that the elderly women glass bead makers are much influenced by the Ghanaian culture of silence. This prevents the women from speaking about the challenges they are facing in their work. Also, the women are silenced because of the fear of losing their jobs as well as the reluctance of their male managers to remedy the challenges they encounter in the course of work. This has resulted in poor remuneration, lack of insurance packages for workers, certification, and absence of personal protective tools for the women. Conclusion: The study tasks the government of Ghana, the Legal Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission in Ghana, the Ghana Trade Union as well as the Local Government Workers' Union to empower the women to sustain the glass bead industry in Ghana.
