Electrodeposition of conducting polymers on active metals by electron transfer mediation

Our laboratory has been exploring new methods for directly depositing conducting polymers onto active metals (such as alu-minum and its alloys). Electron transfer mediation is used to lower the potential for polymer electrodeposition, thereby avoidingconcomitant oxidation (corrosion) of the metal. Current eciencies of nearly 100% for polymer deposition have been obtained. Anoverview of our work in this area is provided in this report.

Spatial variations of residual stresses were determined through the thickness of 70mm thick ferritic steel welds created using low (1.7kJmm<SUP>-1</SUP>) and high (56kJmm<SUP>-1</SUP>) heat inputs. Two-dimensional maps of the longitudinal residual stress were obtained by using the contour method. The results were compared to neutron diffraction measurements through the thickness at different locations from the weld centerline. The deep hole drilling technique was utilized to confirm the maximum stress locations and magnitudes. The results show that significant tensile stresses (~90% of yield strength) occur along the weld centerline near the top surface (within 10% of the depth) in the low heat-input specimen. Meanwhile, in the high heat-input weld, the peak stress moved towards the heat-affected zone at a depth of ~40% of the thickness. Finally, the influence of residual stresses on potential fracture behavior of the welded joints is discussed.

This case report presents two patients who underwent fibular strut grafting for complex revisions of previous lumbar spine arthrodeses. A case review of the Electronic Medical Record at the index institution was performed to evaluate the timeline of events of the two patients who underwent fibular strut grafting for complex revisions of previous lumbar spine arthrodesis, including imaging studies, progress notes, and laboratory results. One patient had developed chronic L3 vertebral body osteomyelitis from a prior fibular allograft and instrumentation placed for a traumatic burst fracture. The second patient had a severe scoliosis recalcitrant to prior arthrodeses in the context of Marfan syndrome and a persistent L4-5 pseudarthrosis. Both patients underwent free vascularized fibular autograft revision arthrodeses. At most recent long-term follow-up, both patients had improved clinically and neither had required further revision. The use of free vascularized fibular grafting is an excellent option for a variety of spinal indications, and these two reports indicate that the technology may have an indication for use after multiple failed surgeries for osteomyelitis or correction of a multi-level large spinal deformity secondary to Marfan syndrome.
