Impromptu Service Discovery and Provision in Heterogeneous Assistive Environments

Wireless hotspots are permeating the globe bringing interesting services and spontaneous connectivity to mobile users. In order to enable the elderly and disabled to be fully integrated into the society, it"s of paramount importance to build a pervasive assistive environment where assistive services can be automatically discovered and easily accessed with the device-to-hand across the physical spaces. In this paper, we propose a framework that can support impromptu service discovery and context-aware service provision with mobile devices in heterogeneous smart assistive environments. Different from the existing approaches, the framework requires no specialized hardware or software installation in mobile client devices, and it can automatically discover and select appropriate services based on the user profile and situation context, and generate personalized user interfaces according to user preference and device capability. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework, we prototyped a set of assistive services in public spaces like shopping malls, leveraging the OSGi-based platform accessible from any WLAN enabled mobile devices.

Context-awareness has emerged as a key enabling technology for future smart homes. In this paper, we propose a generic layered model (the Context Stack) to guide the context-aware system design. We investigate the use of Semantic Web technologies in context modeling and reasoning. A Web Ontology based context model (CONON) is defined to facilitate explicit context representation, semantic context sharing, and logic reasoning. We show how the use of logic reasoning enables context-aware services to deduce high-level, implicit context from low-level, explicit context. In particular, we integrate the temporal ontology into our ontology model to facilitate annotating and reasoning about temporal context information. Following the general layered model, we present an OSGi-based context-aware service architecture for smart homes. We also build the smart home prototype with context-aware services.

Context-aware Reminder Coordination for Assisting Daily Activities of Elders with Dementia

Elderly people with mild dementia often have difficulty to complete daily activities because of memory impairment. This paper proposes to use context-aware reminders to assist elders with mild dementia for their daily activities. Four kinds of reminders are identified in our system, and the coordination among different reminders is particularly researched, leading to a novel scheduling mechanism and a context-aware prompting strategy. The scheduling mechanism resolves the reminder conflicts, and the context-aware prompting strategy ensures the completion of the reminded daily activities to the greatest extent. In order to facilitate the interaction between caregivers and the system, we also provide a reminder description model and a simple software tool for caregivers to create and edit the reminding services. Finally, some initial implementation results are presented.

The microstructural evolution of Mg–2.0Gd–1.2Y–1.0Zn–0.2Zr (GWZK) alloy during homogenization and subsequentaging heat-treatment and the tensile properties of the peak-aged sample at various temperatures have been investigated. Thephase transformation during homogenization, static precipitation during aging, and deformation mechanisms at 250 °C aresystematically analyzed through XRD, TEM and EBSD measurements. The peak-aged GWZK alloy has good combinationof strength and ductility at elevated temperatures owing to its high thermal stability by the LPSO phases distributed alongthe grain boundaries. The change (19 MPa) in the yield strength of peak-aged samples between RT and 250 °C is mainlyrelated to easy gliding of dislocations on the non-basal planes due to the decrease in critical resolved shear stress of slip. Two strengthening models are applied to quantitatively describe the efect of {11 −2 0}훼precipitate plates on Orowanstrengthening corresponding to RT and 250 °C. Ignoring changes in solid solution strengthening and grain boundary strengthening of the peak-aged sample caused by increasing temperature, the calculated reduction value (16.5 MPa) in macroscopicyield strength from RT (based on the basal<a>slip mode) to 250 °C (based on the pyramidal<c+a>slip mode) is in goodagreement with the measured reduction value (19 MPa).

It behaves as a thermoplastic elastomer with a Young's modulus (<I>E</I>) of 6 MPa for an elongation at break of 140% and exhibits good electrical properties with a carrier mobility of 9 × 10<SUP>−4</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>−1</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP>. This novel semiconductor may play an important role in low-cost and large-area stretchable electronics.</P></▼2>
A Trellis-based Technique for Blind Channel Estimation and Equalization

In this paper, we present a trellis-based blind channel estimation and equalization technique coupling two kinds of adaptive Viterbi algorithms. First, the initial blind channel estimation is accomplished by incorporating the list parallel Viterbi algorithm with the least mean square (LMS) updating approach. In this operation, multiple trellis mappings are preserved simultaneously and ranked in terms of path metrics. Equivalently, multiple channel estimates are maintained and updated once a single symbol is received. Second, the best channel estimate from the above operation will be adopted to set up the whole trellis. The conventional adaptive Viterbi algorithm is then applied to detect the signal and further update the channel estimate alternately. A small delay is introduced for the symbol detection and the decision feedback to smooth the noise impact. An automatic switch between the above two operations is also proposed by exploiting the evolution of path metrics and the linear constraint inherent in the trellis mapping. Simulation has shown an overall excellent performance of the proposed scheme in terms of mean square error (MSE) for channel estimation, robustness to the initial channel guess, computational complexity, and channel equalization.
