An overview of current research and developments in biosurfactants

Isabela Maria Monteiro Vieira,Brenda Lohanny Passos Santos,Denise Santos Ruzene,Daniel Pereira Silva 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.100 No.-

Biosurfactants are amphiphilic molecules produced by living organisms and endowed with propertiesand characteristics that make them possible substitutes for synthetic surfactants in their most variedapplications. As well as its relevance, interest in biosurfactants has grown due to the need to seeksustainable alternatives for existing products and processes. In this review, some of the various aspects ofbiosurfactants' production were exposed, from the definition, characteristics, and mechanisms of actionto fermentative parameters, applications, and market perspectives. Such aspects make up only a few ofthe many themes within the biosurfactants universe, which are relevant for understanding thesecomplex molecules, capable of assisting in constructing a more sustainable society for all.

Antidiabetic and Antilipidemic Effects of Manilkara zapota

Sandra Maria Barbalho,Patrı´cia Cincotto dos Santos Bueno,De´bora Souza Delazari,Elen Landgraf Guiguer,,Daniel Pereira Coqueiro,Adriano Cressoni Arau´jo,Maricelma da Silva Soares de Souza,Fla´via M.V. 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.3

Manilkara zapota is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the Sapotaceae family; its parts are used in alternative medicine to treat coughs and colds and possess diuretic, antidiarrheal, antibiotic, antihyperglycemic, and hypocholesterolemic effects. There are no studies on metabolic profile after using the fruit, and this study aimed at evaluating the effects of the leaf and pulp of M. zapota fruit on the metabolic profile of Wistar rats. Male rats were treated for 50 days with M. zapota leaf juice or fruit juice, after which their biochemical and body composition profiles were analyzed (glycemia, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), insulin, leptin, aspartate transaminase, alanine aminotransferase, Lee Index, and body mass index). Our results indicate significantly lower levels of glycemia, insulin, leptin, cholesterol, and triglycerides and augmented levels of HDL-c in animals treated with the leaves or fruit of this plant. The percentage of weight gain also declined in animals treated with M. zapota fruit pulp. The use of the M. zapota may be helpful in the prevention of obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and their complications.

An assessment of responses to egg production and liver health of Japanese quails subjected to different levels of metabolizable energy

Castiblanco Diana Maryuri Correa,Lima Michele Bernardino de,Artoni Silvana Martinez Baraldi,Raimundo Erikson Kadoshe de Morais,Santos Daniel Silva,Carvalho Lizia Cordeiro de,Silva Edney Pereira da 아세아·태평양축산학회 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.1

Objective: Current quail production is configured as an economic activity in scale. Advancements in quail nutrition have been limited to areas such as breeding and, automation of facilities and ambience. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance responses, liver and oviduct morphometry, and liver histology of Japanese laying quails subjected to different levels of nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (MEn). Methods: A completely random design was used that consisted of nine levels of MEn, six replicates, and five hens per cage with a total of 270 quails. The experimental period lasted for 10 weeks. The variables of performance were subjected to analysis of variance and then regression analysis using the broken-line model. The morphometric and histological variables were subjected to multivariate exploratory techniques. Results: The MEn levels influenced the responses to zootechnical performance. The brokenline model estimated the maximum responses for feed intake, egg production, egg weight, and egg mass as 3,040, 2,820, 1,802, and 2,960 kcal of MEn per kg of diet, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that the occurrence of hepatic steatosis and increased levels of Kupffer cells were not related to MEn levels. Conclusion: The level of 2,960 kcal/kg of MEn meets performance variable requirements without compromising hepatic physiology.

Intake, digestibility, and performance of lambs fed spineless cactus cv. Orelha de Elefante Mexicana

        Lopes Levi Auto,Ferreira Marcelo de Andrade,Batista Ângela Maria Vieira,Maciel Michel do Vale,de Andrade Rodrigo Barbosa,Munhame Joana Albino,Silva Tomás Guilherme Pereira da,Cardoso Daniel Barros,Vér 아세아·태평양축산학회 2020 Animal Bioscience Vol.33 No.8

Objective: To evaluate the effects of the carmine cochineal-resistant spineless cactus genotypes cv. Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (Opuntia) and Miúda (Nopalea) on the intake and digestibility of nutrients, ingestive behavior, performance, and ultrasound measurements of growing lambs. Methods: Thirty-six male (non-castrated) Santa Inês lambs were used, with an average age of 6 months and an initial average weight of 22.0±2.9 kg. They were distributed in a completely randomized design with 3 treatments (Tifton hay, Nopalea and Opuntia) and 12 replications, using initial weight as a covariate. The experimental period was 86 days, with the first 30 days used for the adaptation of the animals to the facilities, diets and management, and the remaining 56 days used for evaluation and data collection. Results: The intake and apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), total carbohydrates (TC), non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC), and total digestible nutrients (TDN) showed a significant difference (p<0.05) as a function of the diets, with the Nopalea treatment (p<0.05) increasing DM intake (g/kg and % body weight [BW]), CP, TDN, and TC digestibility, whereas the Tifton hay diet led to a high (p<0.001) neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap) g/d intake, NDFap (BW %) and digestibility of said nutrient. There was no effect of treatments (p>0.05) on feeding time, however, rumination time and total chewing time were higher (p<0.05) for animals fed Tifton hay. The performance of the animals was similar (p>0.05). For the ultrasound measurements, Nopalea promoted an increase in the final loin eye area, compared to Tifton hay. Conclusion: The use of spineless cactus variety Miúda leads to the greater intake and digestibility of nutrients. The evaluated carmine cochineal-resistant spineless cactus genotypes are alternatives for semi-arid regions as they do not negatively affect the performance of growing lambs.
