        A Study on Microbial Contamination of Foods Exposed to Multiple Environments

        In this study, general bacterial counts and coliform counts, which are hygienic indicator microorganisms, were tested for candy, chocolate, and jelly which are easily available and enjoyed around. After dropping each sample on the desk, indoors, and outdoors, it is immediately collected, or washed and collected to confirm the myth of the 3-second rule. Immediately after removing the wrapping paper, each sample was dropped on the desk, indoors, and outdoors, and after 3 seconds from the moment of contact with the surface, and then collected in a sample bag using sterilized sanitary gloves. After the same operation, each sample was rinsed for 5 seconds using sterilized sanitary gloves and sterilized distilled water, and then collected in a sample bag. The number of bacteria detected in non-washing candies was 41 CFU/g at outdoor and the number of bacteria detected in non-washing chocolate was 76 CFU/g at outdoor. The number of bacteria detected in non-washing jellies was 79 CFU/g at outdoor. Coliform group was not detected in all samples. This showed good results at the level of m = 10,000 or less, which is an allowable value suggested in the Food Code. Also, effect of washing on contaminated food was confirmed. This result is remarkably low compared with the microorganism specimens shown in Food Code, and it is confirmed that contamination occurs but not high value. Therefore, the myth of the 3-second rule is true compared to the figures based on Food Code. However, it showed the characteristics of bacteria that could survive and cross-contaminate on dry food surfaces and emphasized the importance of hygiene through food contact to unsanitary surfaces to minimize the risk of food poisoning.

        Study of Photocatalytic Nano-Particle Effects on the Low Temperature Plasma Ionization Mass Spectrometry

        <P>Although the low temperature plasma mass spectrometry (LTP-MS) is widely used as an analysis tool for many biochemical samples, its application window is somehow limited to the analytes of low molecular mass and high volatility. For this reason, there have been attempts to enhance the ionization/desorption efficiencies with extra heating, for instance. In this study, another enhancement method was suggested using the photocatalytic nano-particles (NPs). In order to assess the NP effects on the LTP-MS, two fatty acid ethyl ester samples of ethyl myristate and ethyl palmitate were used, and the NP of titanium dioxide (TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) was mainly employed. The results showed that the signal intensities of the LTP-MS were largely increased with the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> addition for both samples. In addition, the cholesterol sample was analyzed using the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> assisted LTP-MS, also resulting in the enhancement of the signal intensity. The overall results inferred that the photocatalytic NP confirmed its role as an effective assist tool for the LTP-MS, especially suitable because of the facile method and the heat-free nature.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Decontamination of the chemical warfare agent simulant dimethyl methylphosphonate by means of large-area low-temperature atmospheric pressure plasma

        Dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), a chemical simulant of the nerve gas GB, was decontaminated with a nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma. The decontamination efficiency was measured qualitatively by means of Fourier transform spectroscopy and quantitatively by means of gas chromatography. With helium gas only, 10 g/㎡ of DMMP on an aluminum surface was 99.9% decontaminated in 2 min, furthermore, with the addition of 5% of oxygen gas, it was 99.99% decontaminated in 10 min. Given the low input power (<100 W) and temperature (<75 ℃), this plasma is eligible for nondestructive decontamination of almost all material surfaces.

        An impedance bridge measuring the capacitance ratio in the high frequency range up to 1 MHz

        <P>This paper describes a 2-terminal-pair impedance bridge, measuring the capacitance ratio in the high frequency range up to 1 MHz. The bridge was configured with two voltage sources and a phase control unit which enabled the bridge balance by synchronizing the voltage sources with an enhanced phase resolution. Without employing the transformers such as inductive voltage divider, injection and detection transformers, etc, the bridge system is quite simple to set up, and the balance procedure is quick and easy. Using this dual-source coaxial bridge, the 1:1 and 10:1 capacitance ratios were measured with 1 pF–1 nF capacitors in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. The measurement values obtained by the dual-source bridge were then compared with reference values measured using a commercial precision capacitance bridge of AH2700A, the <I>Z</I>-matrix method developed by ourselves, and the 4-terminal-pair coaxial bridge by the Czech Metrological Institute. All the measurements agreed within the reference uncertainty range of an order of 10<SUP>−6</SUP>–10<SUP>−5</SUP>, proving the bridge ability as a trustworthy tool for measuring the capacitance ratio in the high frequency range.</P>

        The Impact of the Percent of Residual Prostate-Specific Antigen on Metastasis-Free Survival in Patients with Persistent Prostate-Specific Antigen after Radical Prostatectomy

        Purpose: Persistent levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a poor prognostic factor for recurrence after radical prostatectomy (RP). We investigated the impact of the percentage of residual PSA (%rPSA) [(post-/preoperative PSA)×100], representing a biochemical residual tumor, and the first postoperative PSA (fPSA) level on metastasis-free survival (MFS) in men with persistent levels of PSA after RP. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively identified male patients within a single tertiary referral hospital database who harbored persistent (≥0.1 ng/mL) vs. undetectable (<0.1 ng/mL) PSA levels 4 to 8 weeks after RP. Kaplan–Meier analyses and Cox regression models were used to test the effect of persistent PSA levels, the fPSA level, and %rPSA on MFS. Results: Of 1,205 patients, 178 patients with persistent PSA levels were enrolled. Seven-year MFS rates were 60.5% vs . 84.3% (p<0.001) for patients with a %rPSA ≥6% and <6%, respectively. Multivariable Cox regression models of the overall cohort revealed that persistent PSA levels (hazard ratio [HR], 3.94; p=0.010), extracapsular extension (HR, 4.17; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06–16.41; p=0.041), and pathological Gleason grade group (pGGG) (HR, 3.69; 95% CI, 1.32–10.27; p=0.013) were independent predictors of metastasis. Multivariable Cox regression models in men with persistent PSA levels revealed that the %rPSA (HR, 8.92; 95% CI, 1.74–45.71; p=0.009) and pGGG 4–5 (HR, 4.13; 95% CI, 1.22–13.96; p=0.022) were independent predictors of distant metastasis, but not the fPSA level after surgery. Conclusions: Persistent levels of PSA were associated with worse MFS after RP. In men with persistent PSA levels after RP, the %rPSA is a valuable predictor of MFS unlike the fPSA level.

        부모양육행동이 초등학생의 사회정서역량에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among students’ perceived parenting behavior, social emotional competencies, and parental expectations. In this study, social and emotional competencies were categorized into two different dimensions: self and social. A survey was administered to 389 fifth and sixth grade students from 4 elementary schools in Seoul, Korea. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the moderating effects of perceived parental expectations. Results suggest that supportive parenting behaviors and behavioral control behaviors promote students’ social emotional competencies. On the other hand, psychological control behaviors undermine the development of social emotional competencies on self-dimension. According to analysis of moderating effects, for students with high parental expectations, it was found that the more supportive parenting behavior, the more likely the children were to cultivate self and social dimensions of social-emotional competencies. Findings from our study suggest that parents need to recognize that appropriate parenting behavior is of utmost importance in the development of children’s social-emotional competencies.

        Enhanced tumor retention of radioiodinated anti-epidermal growth factor receptor antibody using novel bifunctional iodination linker for radioimmunotherapy

        <P>Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) uses an antibody labeled with a radionuclide to deliver cytotoxic radiation to a target tumor cells. Radioiodine is most commonly employed to prepare radiolabeled proteins (antibodies, peptides) for <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I> applications. A major shortcoming of radioiodinated proteins prepared by direct labeling methods is their deiodination <I>in vivo</I>. For the preparation of more stable radioiodinated antibodies, we developed a new linker (N-(4-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-2-(3-(tributylstannyl)phenyl) acetamide (IBPA). This study evaluated the usefulness of IBPA as a linker for the stable radioiodinated internalizing antibody, cetuximab. Directly labeled cetuximab ([<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab) was prepared by the chloramine T method. To prepare indirectly labeled cetuximab using IBPA ([<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab), IBPA was radioiodinated using chloramine-T to give N-(4-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-2-(3-[<SUP>125</SUP>I]phenyl)acetamide ([<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA), which was purified by high performance liquid chromatography. [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA was then conjugated to cetuximab. <I>In vitro</I> target binding and internalizing assays were performed in PC9, LS174T, and FaDu cell lines. <I>In vivo</I> planar images were obtained using an Inveon SPECT scanner 3, 24, 48, and 168 h after i.v. injection of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab or [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab in athymic mice bearing LS174T tumor xenografts. Specific binding and internalized radioactivity of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab were higher than those of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab in PC9, LS174T, and FaDu cell lines. In planar images scant radioactivity was evident in thyroid glands after injection of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab, while a high level of radioactivity was present in thyroid glands after injection of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab. Tumor uptake value of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab was higher than that of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab for up to 168 h. [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab is stable and resistant to deiodination <I>in vivo</I>. IBPA is a promising bi-functional linker for radioiodination of internalizing monoclonal antibodies for <I>in vivo</I> applications including radioimmunotherapy.</P>
