Purpose:Purpose: Vitamin D (VD) acts on sperm motility, capacitation and survival but its role in steroidogenesis is less clear. Aims: To analyze seasonal variations in sex steroids and VD in a healthy male population. Materials and Methods:Materials and Methods: Twenty-nine healthy males, 34.0±4.8 years were included. Blood collection in winter (W) and sum-mer (S) was performed to measure: 25OHD, total testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), estradiol (E2), luteinizing hormone (LH), and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). Testosterone/estradiol (T/E2) ratio was calculated. Results:Results: In W, lower levels of 25OHD: 18.8±7.2 ng/mL vs. 38.8±11.9 ng/mL (p<0.0001) and LH: 3.5±1.2 mU/mL vs. 3.9±1.5 mU/mL (p=0.05), and higher levels of TT: 501.9±157.7 ng/dL vs. 405.0±128.0 ng/dL (p=0.0003), FT: 11.8±4.1 ng/dL vs. 10.2±3.7 ng/dL (p=0.017), SHBG: 28.5±10.9 nmol/L vs. 23.6±7.9 nmol/L (p=0.002) and T/E2 ratio: 30.7±19.7 ng/dL/pg/mL vs. 17.3±3.6 ng/dL/pg/mL (p=0.0015) with no variation in E2 levels were observed. A positive correlation between 25OHD and E2 (r=0.28, p=0.04) and negative correlations between 25OHD and TT (r=-0.27, p=0.049), 25OHD and FT (r=-0.32, p=0.01), and 25OHD and T/E2 (r=-0.44, p=0.0008) were found. Conclusions:Conclusions: In healthy young male population, seasonal variations were observed in 25OHD and LH levels (higher in S) and in TT, FT, SHBG levels, and T/E2 (higher in W). Lower values of TT and FT in S are accompanied by higher levels of LH, which rules out a central mechanism for lowering testosterone. 25OHD negatively correlated with TT, FT, and T/E2 and posi-tively correlated with E2, suggesting a relationship between VD status and changes in gonadal steroids.
Seismic design rules for ductile Eurocode-compliant two-storey X concentrically braced frames

Two-storey X-bracings are currently very popular in European practice, as respect to chevron and simple X bracings, owing to the advantages of reducing the bending demand in the brace-intercepted beams in V and inverted-V configurations and optimizing the design of gusset plate connections. However, rules for two-storey X braced frames are not clearly specified within current version of EN1998-1, thus leading to different interpretations of the code by designers. The research presented in this paper is addressed at investigating the seismic behaviour of two-storey X concentrically braced frames in order to revise the design rules within EN1998-1. Therefore, five different design criteria are discussed, and their effectiveness is investigated. With this aim, a comprehensive numerical parametric study is carried out considering a set of planar frames extracted from a set of structural archetypes that are representative of regular low, medium and high-rise buildings. The obtained results show that the proposed design criteria ensure satisfactory seismic performance.
Lumbar Calcifying Pseudoneoplasm as a Rare Cause of Cauda Equina Syndrome: A Case Report

A calcifying pseudo-tumor of the spine, also called calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis (CAPNON), is a rare non-neoplastic lesion that can occur anywhere in the central nervous system. Although CAPNON shows tumor-like behavior, it is believed to be benign and of inflammatory-reactive origin. It may cause many neurologic symptoms by compressing adjacent structures. We report the case of a 45-year-old man who presented with cauda equina syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a partially calcified mass compressing the spinal cord. Gross total resection was carried out and the patient’s symptoms improved. Histopathology proved that the mass was CAPNON. Although spinal localization of CAPNON is rare, we should know and recognize this entity based on appropriate imaging findings because radical excision has an excellent prognosis.
Constraint Release Mechanisms for H-Polymers Moving in Linear Matrices of Varying Molar Masses

<P>We investigate the influence of the environment on the relaxation dynamics of well-defined H-polymers diluted in a matrix of linear chains. The molar mass of the linear chain matrix is systematically varied and the relaxation dynamics of the H-polymer is probed by means of linear viscoelastic measurements, with the aim to understand its altered motion in different blends, compared to its pure melt state. Our results indicate that short unentangled linear chains accelerate the relaxation of both the branches and the backbone of the H-polymers by acting as an effective solvent. On the other hand, the relaxation of the H-polymer in an entangled matrix is slowed-down, with the degree of retardation depending on the entanglement number of the linear chains. We show that this retardation can be quantified by considering that the H-polymers are moving in a dilated tube at the rhythm of the motion of the linear matrix.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Concerns about how consumers respond to health care promotional information in the United States led the authors to conduct an exploratory study to investigate gender differences in the knowledge, and the level of importance of health and wellness issues. Seven marketer-dominated and three non-marketerdominated sources of Health Care Information (HCI) were examined. Significant findings were found for three marketerdominated and three non-marketer-dominated sources Health and Wellness Information. Additionally, significant differences were found between men and women’s ratings of the importance of childhood obesity, healthy nutrition, and the importance of regular exercise. The results on this study may be relevant to health care marketing professionals and for promotional planners developing sustainable health and wellness integrated marketing communication campaigns. The occurrence of Austroboletus subflavidus and Fistulinella gloeocarpa is documented from the Dominican Republic. The latter species is reported for the first time outside its original locality in Martinique, extending the geographic range for this uncommon pinkish-spored bolete. A detailed morphological description is provided for each species and accompanied by color pictures of fresh basidiomes in habitat and line drawings of the main anatomical features. Both species represent independent lineages within their respective genera based on phylogenetic inference. In addition, A. subflavidus clusters in a sister lineage to the core Austroboletus clade (Austroboletus clade I) here named as Austroboletus clade II. In order to confirm the accuracy of species identification, their identity and relationships were subjected to multilocus phylogenetic analyses of three gene markers (ITS, nrLSU, RPB2) including genetic material already available in public databases. Austroboletus subflavidus is a widely distributed species in North and Central America, whereas F. gloeocarpa is apparently highly localized and seems to appear sparingly in the Dominican Republic, Martinque, and southern Florida. Comparisons with morphologically similar and molecularly inferred allied species are also presented and discussed.

Objective: Investigate association of single nucleotide polymorphism rs1051266 on 80th nucleotide of reduced folate carrier 1 (RFC1) gene with non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (nsCL±P). Materials and Methods: A case-control study design was used for this study. Samples of cases (188 individuals with nsCL±P) and controls (157 individuals) were Hispanics from Venezuela and Guatemala. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood spots on filter paper. RFC1-A80G genotypes were established using polymerase chain reaction and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Results: Statistically significant higher proportion of mutated homozygotes GG and the lower homozygotes AA were found in cases compared to controls (p=.0234). Also, A and G allele frequencies were significantly different (p=.0088). When each location was evaluated separately the highly significant differences were observed only in Guatemalan but not in Venezuelan subsample. Conclusions: Our study showed that RFC1-A80G variant may contribute to the etiology of nsCL±P. It revealed differences in RFC1-A80G polymorphism frequencies in populations from different locations. A strong association of RFC1-A80G polymorphism with nsCL±P was observed in the population from Guatemala City, Guatemala only. We have shown that lumping together samples from different populations could hide differences in genotype and allele frequencies in individual populations.
