        Electrical and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Composites Reinforced with Kaolin-Coated Basalt Fibers

        Basalt fiber (BF) is appropriately used for manufacturing insulating rods because of its excellent aging resistance, hightemperature resistance, electrical insulation, and mechanical strength. However, due to the inert structure on the surface ofthe fiber, the close bonding between the fiber and the resin is hindered. The low bonding strength of the fiber/resin interfacewill significantly reduce the mechanical and insulation properties of the composite, which limits its application in electricalequipment such as insulating rods and insulators. Therefore, this paper attempts to improve the surface roughness of BF byusing Kaolin to strengthen the bonding strength between BF and matrix resin, and analyze and study the mechanical and insulationproperties of the composites before and after modification. The Kaolin content coated on BF ranged from 0.5 to 2 wt%,and the composites modified by 1.5wt%Kaolin (1.5-wt%-K-BFRP) exhibited excellent electrical insulation and mechanicalperformance. Compared with untreated BFRP, the electrical breakdown strength and flashover voltage of 1.5-wt%-K-BFRPincreased by 18.49% and 10.69%, elevated to the 20.57 kV/mm and 13.04 kV, respectively, and the dielectric loss decreasedby 49%, down to 0.83%. The above results indicate that modified BFRP has excellent insulation strength and is suitable forthe manufacture of insulating devices. Furthermore, the bending strength, bending modulus, tensile strength, and interlayershear strength of 1.5-wt%-K-BFRP increased by 67.59%, 21%, 14.56%, and 103.7%, respectively, compared with untreatedBFRP, reach to 465.17 MPa, 31.49 GPa, 562.3 MPa, 26.44 MPa.

        Pretreatment Serum Amyloid A and C-reactive Protein Comparing with Epstein-Barr Virus DNA as Prognostic Indicators in Patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: A Prospective Study

        Purpose The measuring Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA is an important predictor of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study evaluated the predictive value of pretreatment serum amyloid A (SAA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) comparing with EBV DNA in patients with NPC. Materials and Methods In an observational study of 419 non-metastatic NPC patients, we prospectively evaluated the prognostic effects of pretreatment SAA, CRP, and EBV DNA on survival. The primary endpoint was progress-free survival (PFS). Results The median level of SAA and CRP was 4.28 mg/L and 1.88 mg/L, respectively. For the high- SAA group (> 4.28 mg/L) versus the low-SAA ( 4.28 mg/L) group and the high-CRP group (> 1.88 mg/L) versus the low-CRP ( 1.88 mg/L) group, the 5-year PFS was 64.5% versus 73.1% (p=0.013) and 65.2% versus 73.3% (p=0.064), respectively. EBV DNA detection showed a superior predictive result, the 5-year PFS in the EBV DNA  1,500 copies/mL group was obviously different than the EBV DNA < 1,500 copies/mL group (62.2% versus 77.8%, p < 0.001). Multifactorial Cox regression analysis confirmed that in the PFS, the independent prognostic factors were including EBV DNA (hazard ratio [HR], 1.788; p=0.009), tumour stage (HR, 1.903; p=0.021), and node stage (HR, 1.498; p=0.049), but the SAA and CRP were not included in the independent prognostic factors. Conclusion The results of SAA and CRP had a certain relationship with the prognosis of NPC, and the prognosis of patients with high level of SAA and CRP were poor. However, the predictive ability of SAA and CRP was lower than that of EBV DNA.

        Effects of different carbon sources on the phase composition and microstructure of synthesized SiC-B4C composite powders

        SiC-B4C composite powders were synthesized by the carbothermal reduction method under an argon atmosphere usingdifferent kinds of carbon sources (carbon black and starch) and silica sol and boric acid as the precursor raw materials. Basedon thermodynamic analysis and calculation, the effects of different carbon sources and reaction temperatures on the mass lossrate, phase composition, and microstructure of SiC-B4C ultrafine composite powders were comparatively studied. Resultsshowed that the optimum conditions for synthesizing SiC-B4C composite powders with carbon black as the carbon source were1550 ºC for 2 h, whereas the optimum conditions for synthesizing SiC-B4C composite powders with starch as the carbon sourcewere 1450 ºC-1550 ºC for 2 h. The powder samples synthesized with carbon black as the carbon source at 1550 ºC were mainlycomposed of flaky, columnar-like, spherical, and irregular polyhedral particles (about 100-200 nm in diameter). Mutualcohesion or agglomeration between particles was minimal. In the powder samples synthesized at 1550 ºC with an excess of 10wt% starch, in addition to a certain amount of flaky, spherical, and other irregular structure particles, a certain amount ofuniform, slender whiskers (about 50-100 nm in diameter) and a certain phenomenon of lap and winding between the whiskerswere noted. The powder samples synthesized at 1550 ºC with an excess of 20 wt% starch had no whisker-like substance.

        Fumigaclavine C attenuates adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and ameliorates lipid accumulation in high-fat diet-induced obese mice

        Fumigaclavine C (FC), an active indole alkaloid, is obtained from endophytic Aspergillus terreus (strain No. FC118) by the root of Rhizophora stylosa (Rhizophoraceae). This study is designed to evaluate whether FC has anti-adipogenic effects in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and whether it ameliorates lipid accumulation in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. FC notably increased the levels of glycerol in the culture supernatants and markedly reduced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. FC differentially inhibited the expressions of adipogenesis-related genes, including the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor proteins, CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins, and sterol regulatory element-binding proteins. FC markedly reduced the expressions of lipid synthesis-related genes, such as the fatty acid binding protein, lipoprotein lipase, and fatty acid synthase. Furthermore, FC significantly increased the expressions of lipolysis-related genes, such as the hormone-sensitive lipase, Aquaporin-7, and adipose triglyceride lipase. In HFD-induced obese mice, intraperitoneal injections of FC decreased both the body weight and visceral adipose tissue weight. FC administration significantly reduced lipid accumulation. Moreover, FC could dose-dependently and differentially regulate the expressions of lipid metabolism-related transcription factors. All these data indicated that FC exhibited anti-obesity effects through modulating adipogenesis and lipolysis.

        PERFORMANCE OF R-1234YF IN MOBILE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM UNDER DIFFERENT HEAT LOAD CONDITIONS

        "Drop-in" tests of R-1234yf in a mobile air conditioning (MAC) system were conducted, and the system performance results were compared with those of the same system using R-134a. The performance tests were performed in a psychrometric calorimeter test facility based on enthalpy-difference method. The system performance was investigated under low-, middle- and high-load conditions. The results showed that the optimum refrigerant charge of R-1234yf was approximately 90% compared with that of R-134a under the same MAC system. When operated under optimum refrigerant charge, the system cooling capacity and COP of R-1234yf was 11% and 8.3% lower than that of the R-134a system, respectively. When wind tunnel test was conducted on a practical vehicle, the result showed that the carriage temperature in the vehicle with the R-1234yf system dropped slower. The average carriage temperature and blower outlet temperature were $2^{\circ}C$ higher than those of the R-134a system during the test.

        Effects of raw meat and process procedure on N<sup>ε</sup>-carboxymethyl-lysine and N<sup>ε</sup>-carboxyethyl-lysine formation in meat products

        This work aimed to investigate the effects of stored raw meat and process procedures on $N^{\varepsilon}$-carboxymethyl-lysine (CML) and $N^{\varepsilon}$-carboxyethyl-lysine (CEL) generation in meat products. Meat products of raw pork were sterilized and pasteurized at different storage times (0-4 months) and the CML/CEL contents were determined. The results showed that the extent of lipid and protein oxidation of raw pork increased with increasing storage time. A linear correlation was found between thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances value/carbonyl content and CML/CEL in sterilized meat products, indicating that stored raw pork could promote CML/CEL formation under high temperature processing. Furthermore, mild heating temperatures seemed to favor CML formation, while high temperature could accelerate CEL generation. Therefore, formation kinetics of CML and CEL might be different for different process procedures. These results suggested that stored raw meat and processing temperature could significantly affect CML and CEL generation in meat products.

      • Pancreatic Cancer Incidence and Mortality Patterns in China, 2009

        Objective: To estimate the incidence and mortality rates for pancreatic cancer in China. Methods: After checking and reviewing the cancer registry data in 2009 from 72 cancer registry centers, we divided cancer registry areas into urban and rural areas. Incidence/mortality rates, age-specific incidence/mortality rates, age-standardized incidence/mortality rates, proportions, and cumulative incidence/mortality rates for pancreatic cancer were calculated. Results: The total number of newly diagnosed pancreatic cancer cases and deaths in 2009 were 6,220 and 5,650, respectively. The crude incidence rate in all cancer registry areas was 7.28/100,000 (males 8.24, females 6.29). The age-standardized incidence rate by Chinese standard population (ASR) was 3.35/100,000, with ranking at 7th among all cancers. Pancreatic cancer incidence rate was 8.19/100,000 in urban areas whereas it was 5.41/100 000 in rural areas. Cancer mortality rate in all cancer registry areas was 6.61/100,000 (males 7.45; females 5.75), with ranking at 6th among all cancers, and 7.42/100 000 in urban but 4.94/100000 in rural areas. Conclusions: Pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality rates have shown a gradual increase in China. Owing to the difficulty of early diagnosis, identification of high-risk population and modification of risk factors are important to reduce the burden of pancreatic cancer.

        Effect of B-complex vitamins on the antifatigue activity and bioavailability of ginsenoside Re after oral administration

        Background: Both ginsenoside Re and B-complex vitamins are widely used as nutritional supplements. They are often taken together so as to fully utilize their antifatigue and refreshing effects, respectively. Whether actually a drug-nutrient interaction exists between ginsenoside Re and B-complex vitamins is still unknown. The objective of this study was to simultaneously investigate the effect of B-complex vitamins on the antifatigue activity and bioavailability of ginsenoside Re after their oral administration. The study results will provide valuable theoretical guidance for the combined utilization of ginseng and B-complex vitamins. Methods: Ginsenoside Re with or without B-complex vitamins was orally administered to mice to evaluate its antifatigue effects and to rats to evaluate its bioavailability. The antifatigue activity was evaluated by the weight-loaded swimming test and biochemical parameters, including hepatic glycogen, plasma urea nitrogen, and blood lactic acid. The concentration of ginsenoside Re in plasma was determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Results: No antifatigue effect of ginsenoside Re was noted when ginsenoside Re in combination with B-complex vitamins was orally administered to mice. B-complex vitamins caused to a reduction in the bioavailability of ginsenoside Re with the area under the concentration-time curve from zero to infinity markedly decreasing from $11,830.85{\pm}2,366.47h{\cdot}ng/mL$ to $890.55{\pm}372.94h{\cdot}ng/mL$. Conclusion: The results suggested that there were pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic drug-nutrient interactions between ginsenoside Re and B-complex vitamins. B-complex vitamins can significantly weaken the antifatigue effect and decrease the bioavailability of ginsenoside Re when simultaneously administered orally.
