Cancer chemopreventive effects can be exerted through the induction of phase II detoxification enzymes and the inhibition of inflammatory responses. In this study, the cancer chemopreventive effects and anti-inflammatory responses of 30 seaweed extracts were examined. The extracts of Dictyota coriacea and Cutleria cylindrica exhibited the high chemoprevention index, having 4.36 and 4.66, respectively. They also activated antioxidant response element at 100 μg/mL by about 3-fold while did not activate xenobiotic response element. Seven seaweed extracts, Ishige okamurae, Desmarestia ligulata, Desmarestia viridis, Dictyopteris divaricata, D. coriacea, Sargassum horneri, and Sargassum yezoense, showed significant inhibition on nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E<sub>2</sub> (PGE<sub>2</sub>) production in a dose-dependant manner in 5-20 μg/mL. These seaweed extracts could be used as food materials for cancer chemoprevention. D. coriacea could contain potential chemopreventive agents not only that regulate genes via an ARE-dependent mechanism but also prevent the inflammation through inhibition of NO and PGE<sub>2</sub> production.

목 적: 난치성 간질로 뇌엽 절제술을 받은 환자의 조직병리 소견상 피질 이형성증과 미세발생이상으로 분류되는 환자들의 임상양상과 뇌파, 영상학적 검사결과를 비교 고찰하여 진단에 도움이 되고자 하였다. 방 법: 2003년 10월부터 2006년 9월까지 난치성 간질로 연세대학교 세브란스병원에 입원하여 뇌엽절제술 시행 후 병리학적으로 피질 이형성증으로 확인된 11명과 미세발생이상으로 확인된 16명의 소아을 대상으로 후향적 의무기록 고찰과 분석을 시행하여 임상양상, 병변 위치, 뇌파, 뇌 자기공명영상, 수술 예후에 대하여 조사하였다. 결 과: 1) 임상 양상 : 피질 이형성증 환자와 미세발생이상 환자 모두 남아의 비율이 높았으며 난치성 간질을 보이는 연령이나 경련 양상, 경련의 빈도 등의 차이는 없었다. 수술 시 피질이형성증 환자의 83.3%(5/6), 미세발생이상 환자의 69.2%(9/13)에서 역연령 수준에 대하여 70% 미만의 발달 지연을 보였다. 2) 뇌파 소견 : 대뇌피질 발달 기형 부위에서 보이는 뇌파 소견은 피질 이형성증과 미세발생 이상에서 공통적으로 국소적 서파, 예파, 국소적인 속파순으로 나타났으며 각 군에서만 보이는 특징적인 소견은 없었다. 3) 영상학적 검사 결과 : 자기공명영상에서 국소적인 피질 두께 증가, 백질과 회질의 경계가 불분명한 소견, 기저 백질 부위에 신호 강도 변화, T2 강조영상에서 신호 강도 증가는 피질 이형성증을 시사하는 소견으로, 피질 이형성증 환자의 81.8%(9/11), 미세발생이상 환자의 43.8%(7/16)에서 병변 부위에 이러한 소견이 나타났으나, 피질 이형성증 환자의 18.2%(2/11), 미세발생이상 환자의 37.5%(6/16)는 정상 소견을 보였다. PET 검사가 병변을 국소화하는데 있어 자기공명영상보다 높은 진단양성율을 보였다. 4) 대뇌피질 발달기형 부위 : 대뇌피질 발달기형의 부위는 피질 이형성증과 미세발생이상 모두 전두엽에 가장 높은 빈도를 보였으며 관자엽이 그 다음이었다. 5. 수술 후 결과 : 수술 후 예후는 피질 이형성증 환자의 81.8%(9/11), 미세발생이상 환자의 68.7%(11/16)에서 발작 소실 상태를 유지하였고, MCD의 부위가 수술 후 예후에 영향을 주지 않음을 확인하였으며, 수술 후 발달 지연에 대한 평가가 이루어진 환자 모두에서 발달 지연의 호전을 보였다. 결 론: 본 연구에서 피질 이형성증과 미세발생이상은 대뇌피질 발달 기형의 정도에 따른 조직병리학적 분류로, 임상양상, 특징적인 뇌파소견, 병변 부위, 뇌파, 뇌 자기공명영상 소견에서 두 군간의 유의한 차이는 없었다. 수술 후 예후는 피질 이형성증 환자가 더 좋았으나 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았고, 수술 후 피질 이형성증과 미세발생이상 모두에서 발달 지연의 호전을 보였다. Purpose : The diagnosis of cortical dysplasia(CD) and microdysgenesis(MD) is valuable because they often cause childhood intractable epilepsy. This study is to analyze clinical manifestations, EEG findings, and imaging features based on the pathologic diagnosis(cortical dysplasia and microdysgenesis) in childhood intractable epilepsy with surgical treatment. Methods : We performed retrospective studies and analyzed 27 patients with MCD diagnosed by pathologic findings after brain lobectomy for intractable epilepsy from October 2003 to September 2006 in our hospital. We compared their clinical characteristics, EEGs, neuroimaging studies including MRI, and FDG-PET. We analyzed the locations of malformations of cortical development(MCD). The surgical outcomes were reviewed. Results : There were no pathognomonic seizure types or EEG findings for microdysgenesis. The clinical and EEG features of microdysgenesis were similar to those of cortical dysplasia. Only 6(37 percent) out of 16 microdysgenesis patients showed normal MRI findings and also 2(18 percent) out of 10 cortical dysplasia patients showed normal MRI findings. The most common location of MCD was frontal lobe in both of the groups, followed by temporal lobe. 10(63%) out of 16 microdysgenesis patients and 9 (90%) out of 10 cortical dysplasia patients became seizure free. The locations of MCD was not related to the prognosis of the outcomes. All the patients who had had developmental delay showed improvement in development after the surgery. Conclusion : There were no significant differences in gender, seizure onset age, duration of seizures, seizure types, EEG findings, and MCD locations between CD and MD. The seizure outcomes were better in CD than in MD. All the patients whose pre- and post-oprative developmental status were compared showed developmental improvement.
The Chemopreventive Effect of Taxifolin Is Exerted through ARE-Dependent Gene Regulation

<P>Phase II detoxification enzymes are responsible for the detoxification and elimination of activated carcinogens, and thus act as important biomarkers for chemoprevention. In this study, we tested the chemopreventive activity of taxifolin, a flavanon compound purified from a mongolian medicinal plant, by measuring quinone reductase (QR) activity in HCT 116 cells. Taxifolin induced significant QR activity, but displayed relatively low cytotoxicity in cells (chemoprevention index=5.75). To identify the target genes regulated by taxifolin, DNA microarray was performed with a 3K human cancer chip containing 3096 human genes associated with carcinogenesis. Significant analysis of microarray (SAM) revealed 428 differentially expressed (DE) genes as statistically significant, with a false discovery rate (FDR) of 57.2% (delta=0.3366). Sixty-five genes, including a few detoxification enzymes (<I>NQO1</I>, <I>GSTM1</I>) and an antioxidant enzyme (<I>TXNRD1</I>), were up-regulated and 363 genes were down-regulated in the presence of 60 μ<SMALL>M</SMALL> taxifolin. In view of the finding that selected genes of interest contained antioxidant response element (ARE), we hypothesize that taxifolin modulates chemopreventive genes through activation of the ARE. Transient transfection experiments using the ARE QR-CAT construct demonstrate that taxifolin significantly activates ARE, but not xenobiotic response element (XRE). In conclusion, taxifolin acts as a potential chemopreventive agent by regulating genes <I>via</I> an ARE-dependent mechanism.</P>
Increased serum thymic stromal lymphopoietin in children with atopic dermatitis

Serum TSLP levels, blood eosinophil counts, and serum total and specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were measured in 232 children. Subjects were characterized as having atopic eczema (AE; n = 75), non-atopic eczema (NAE; n = 70), or normal controls (n = 87). Serum TSLP levels in children with AD were significantly higher than normal controls but there were no differences in children with atopic and non-atopic eczema. However, serum TSLP levels in children with AD were not significantly correlated with disease severity, blood eosinophil counts and serum total IgE levels. Our findings show an association between TSLP and AD including both AE and NAE. It is suggested that TSLP may play a contributory role in the pathogenesis of AD regardless of the presence of atopy.</P>

A number of essential oils from Mongolian aromatic plants are claimed to have antimicrobial activities. The essential oil of Dracocephalum foetidum, a popular essential oil used in Mongolian traditional medicine, was examined for its antimicrobial activity. Eight human pathogenic microorganisms including B. subtilis, S. aureus, M. lutens, E. hirae, S. mutans, E. coli, C. albicans, and S. cerevisiae were examined. The essential oil of Dracocephalum foetidum exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against most of the pathogenic bacteria and yeast strains that were tested; by both the agar diffusion method and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay ($MIC\;range\;was\;26-2592{\mu}g/ml$). Interestingly, Dracocephalum foetidum even showed antimicrobial activity against methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. We also analyzed the chemical composition of the oil by GC-MS and identified several major components, including n-Mentha-1,8-dien-10-al, limonene, geranial, and neral.
Carbon contribution of sea ice floes in the Arctic Ocean

To estimate detailed contributions of particulate organic carbon (POC) as a potential food source in various environments of the Arctic sea ice floes, intensive investigations were executed at two different types of sea ice stations (ST 1 and ST 2) in the northern Chukchi Sea during the summer period in 2011. The average uptake rates of carbon and nitrogen in melt ponds from this study were within the range measured previously. The surface ice of melt ponds at ST 1 had the highest POC concentration with a mean of 148.0mgCm<SUP>-3</SUP> (S.D.=+/-86.0mgCm<SUP>-3</SUP>), followed by sea ice cores at ST 2 (mean+/-S.D.=125.7+/-128.2mgCm<SUP>-3</SUP>). The POC concentrations in melt ponds ranged between 90.0mgCm<SUP>-3</SUP> (S.D.=+/-12.7mgCm<SUP>-3</SUP>) and 103.9mgCm<SUP>-3</SUP> (S.D.=+/-47.7mgCm<SUP>-3</SUP>) at ST 1 and ST 2, respectively. Major POC contributors to melt ponds were diatoms with a mean biovolume contribution of 48.7% (S.D.=+/-39.1%) which was strongly related to in situ salinity. Although the total POC concentration of entire sea ice floes ranged from 2.8% to 5.3% of the POC concentration within the euphotic water column at the study locations, the carbon contribution of sea ice floes could be important to higher trophic levels because of the concentrated POC within sea ice floes.
