        Coherent Absorption Spectroscopy with Supercontinuum for Semiconductor Quantum Well Structure

        We suggest that supercontinuum can be used for absorption spectroscopy to observe the exciton levels of a semiconductor nano-structure. Exciton absorption spectrum of a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well was observed using supercontinuum generated by a microstructrured fiber pumped by a femtosecond (fs) pulsed laser. Significantly narrower peaks were observed in the absorption spectrum from 11 K up to room temperature than photoluminescence (PL) spectrum peaks. Because supercontinuum is coherent light and can readily provide high enough intensity, this method can provide a coherent ultra-broad band light source to identify exciton levels in semiconductors, and be applicable to coherent nonlinear spectroscopy such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), lasing without inversion (LWI) and coherent photon control in semiconductor quantum structures.

      • Hydroquinone Exhibits In Vitro and In Vivo Anti-Cancer Activity in Cancer Cells and Mice

        <P>Hydroquinone (HQ, 1,4-benzenediol) is a hydroxylated benzene metabolite with various biological activities, including anti-oxidative, neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory functions. However, the anti-cancer activity of HQ is not well understood. In this study, the in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity of HQ was investigated in various cancer cells and tumor-bearing mouse models. HQ significantly induced the death of A431, SYF, B16F10, and MDA-MB-231 cells and also showed a synergistic effect on A431 cell death with other anti-cancer agents, such as adenosine-2′,3′-dialdehyde and buthionine sulfoximine. In addition, HQ suppressed angiogenesis in fertilized chicken embryos. Moreover, HQ prevented lung metastasis of melanoma cells in mice in a dose-dependent manner without toxicity and adverse effects. HQ (10 mg/kg) also suppressed the generation of colon and reduced the thickness of colon tissues in azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulfate-injected mice. This study strongly suggests that HQ possesses in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity and provides evidence that HQ could be developed as an effective and safe anti-cancer drug.</P>

        Relationships between Blossom-End Rot in Pepper and Calcium Fertilization during the First Fruit Setting Period

        Blossom-end rot is probably the most recognizable Ca deficiency that affects fruit production including pepper. We investigated the induction of blossom-end rot during the period of rapid vegetative growth and fruit setting, and the effect of Ca fertilization on the suppression of blossom-end rot in pepper plants grown in a plastic-film house. During the first fruit setting period, more than 60% of pepper fruits larger than 8 cm showed the symptoms of blossom-end rot. Under the condition of transpiration occurring at a much faster rate, growing leaves of pepper plants could be the greater sinks for Ca than developing fruits. The incidence of blossom-end rot was significantly decreased after two weeks of Ca fertigation. Calcium application during the rapid vegetative growth and fruit setting period could be suggested as a preventive step to overcome the local Ca deficiency inducing blossom-end rot of pepper fruits.

        Recently, Indoor air quality(IAQ) in workplace, residential environments and schools has been concern of people, scientists and related the public. And so in Seoul has recognized the healthy effect related to IAQ in schools. Therefore, the objective of this study reported in this article were to measure and compare the perception of IAQ of selected air pollutants at three different schools in Seoul. We performed a questionnaire survey of 400 students about their awareness for the importance of IAQ in our school. And we measured the IAQ of 3 schools considering as site region, construction year and studying level. The indoor air pollutants and parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, respirable particulate matter(PM10). formaldehyde(HCHO), total bacteria counts(TBC), carbon dioxide(C0₂), and noise were monitored in indoors. In results, all most response of occupant has recognized the awareness of IAQ at schools. The PM10. TBC and Noise level of all schools were higher than the standard of the public 150㎍/m³ and 500 CFU/rn³, the level formaldehyde(HCHO) was below 0.1 ppm of the healthy guideline of Korea And the concentration of CO₂ were investigated below 1,000 ppm of the standard implying ventilation in 2 schools except for 1 school(c school). Finally. the control of most important pollutants of IAQ in school were PM 10. TBC and Noise. Therefore, it can be concluded that the indoor air quality of selected 3 schools studied was perceived as acceptable. it is recommended that the government related IAQ was suggested the guideline and control of lAQ problems in schools. and all member relating school need to be effort to reduce the exposure of sources to undesirable indoor pollutants such as Particlate and Noise.

        The Obama Administration`s North Korea Policy and Prospects of Six-Party Talks

        이 논문은 6자회담과 오바마행정부의 대북정책을 분석하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 논문의 전반부에서는 6자회담의 진행과정, 성과, 한계점 등을 다루고 있다. 6자회담이 시작된 이래 미국, 남한, 북한, 중국, 일본, 러시아 등 당사국들 간에 있었던 9.19공동성명, 2.13합의, 10.3 선언 등의 내용을 살펴봄으로써 그 동안에 있었던 6자회담의 성과 및 자세히 다루었다. 또한 2010년 4월의 천안함 사건과 11월에 발생한 북한의 연평도 도발이 남북관계에 미친 영향을 분석하였고 이후의 남북, 북미관계의 진행상황에 대해서도 언급하였다. 본 논문의 두 번째 부분에서는 오바마행정부의 대북정책을 분석하였다. 오바마행정부의 대외정책의 기조를 파악하기 위해 2010년에 발행된 QDR, NPR, NSS 보고서의 핵심내용을 살펴보았다. 이 보고서들의 공통점은 전 세계적 차원에서 핵무기의 확산을 막고 핵무기를 감축할 것이며, 국제테러리즘에 대하여 적극적으로 대처하겠다는 오바마행정부의 의지가 나타나 있다. 또한 이러한 오바마행정부의 대외정책 목표들이 어떻게 대북정책에 투영되고 있는지를 분석하고 있다. 아프가니스탄, 이란, 이라크, 국내경제문제 등의 시급성으로 인해 오바마행정부의 대북정책은 정책의 우선순위에서 밀려나게 되었고 이로 인해 북한 핵무기 폐기를 위한 6차회담의 진행은 큰 진전을 보지 못했다. 한국의 이명박 정부가 등장하면서 추진한 ``비핵개방 3000``정책도 북한이 대북 강압정책으로 인식하게 되면서 남북관계 또한 경색국면을 벗어나지 못한 점, 그리고 이러한 상황에서 발생한 천안함사건과 연평도 폭격으로 한반도의 긴장이 고조되었음을 지척하였다. 본 논문의 마지막 부분에서는 향후 오바마행정부의 대북정책의 향방과 6자회담을 전망하였다. 현재 6자회담의 진행을 막고 있는 첨예한 이슈들인 북핵 검즘문제, 북미관계정상화, 평화조약체결 등에 대한 설명과 분석을 통해 6자회담을 통한 대화와 타협이 북핵문제의 해결책임을 제시하고 있다. The purposes of this paper are to critically reexamine the progress of the Six-Party Talks (6PT), and to evaluate Obama administration`s North Korea policy. This research will be focused on answering the following two questions: 1) Can we resolve North Korea`s nuclear provocation through negotiation? 2) What can be done for the resumption of the 6PT? Next, I examined three significant arrangements were attained respectively on September 19, 2005. February 13, 2007. and October 3, 2007. Also, I discussed Obama administration`s overall policy objectives as well as his North Korea policy. In the final section of paper, I recommended several points for the resolution of North Korean nuclear weapons program. I recommended the Obama administration not to drag out issues pending between Washington and Pyongyang. Also, I urged the Obama administration must preserve policy coordination with the ROK in coping with North Korea`s nuclear, missile, and conventional threats.

        Clinical course of ulcerative colitis patients who develop acute pancreatitis

        <P><B>AIM</B></P><P>To investigate the clinical course of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients who develop acute pancreatitis.</P><P><B>METHODS</B></P><P>We analyzed 3307 UC patients from the inflammatory bowel disease registry at Asan Medical Center from June 1989 to May 2015. The clinical course of UC patients who developed acute pancreatitis was compared with that of non-pancreatitis UC patients.</P><P><B>RESULTS</B></P><P>Among 51 patients who developed acute pancreatitis, 13 (0.40%) had autoimmune, 10 (0.30%) had aminosalicylate-induced, and 13 (1.73%) had thiopurine-induced pancreatitis. All 13 patients with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) had type 2 AIP. Two (15.4%) patients had pre-existing AIP, and three (23.1%) patients developed AIP and UC simultaneously. Compared to non-pancreatitis patients, AIP patients had UC diagnosed at a significantly younger age (median, 22.9 years <I>vs</I> 36.4 years; <I>P</I> = 0.001). AIP and aminosalicylate-induced pancreatitis patients had more extensive UC compared to non-pancreatitis patients. All patients with pancreatitis recovered uneventfully, and there were no recurrences. Biologics were used more frequently in aminosalicylate- and thiopurine-induced pancreatitis patients compared to non-pancreatitis patients [adjusted OR (95%CI), 5.16 (1.42-18.67) and 6.90 (1.83-25.98), respectively]. Biologic utilization rate was similar among AIP and non-pancreatitis patients [OR (95%CI), 0.84 (0.11-6.66)]. Colectomy rates for autoimmune, aminosalicylate-induced, and thiopurine-induced pancreatitis, and for non-pancreatitis patients were 15.4% (2/13), 20% (2/10), 15.4% (2/13), and 7.3% (239/3256), respectively; the rates were not significantly different after adjusting for baseline disease extent.</P><P><B>CONCLUSION</B></P><P>Pancreatitis patients show a non-significant increase in colectomy, after adjusting for baseline disease extent.</P>
