Design of Virtual Reality Exergame to Promote Upper-Body Movement for Older Adults with Dementia

Engaging in exercise has many benefits for older adults with dementia, therefore it is beneficial to support access to safe, effective, and engaging exercise programs. The goal of this research is to develop an exercise game (exergame) program for head-mounted display virtual reality (HMD-VR) based on exercise therapy best-practices designed to complement the interests and capabilities of people living with dementia. This paper describes the selection of targeted exercises and the design of the corresponding exergames. Preliminary prototype testing with three people with dementia has demonstrated the feasibility and potential of the exergame. Future work will include testing the exergame program with people living with dementia living in long-term care.
Optimization of Fecal Calprotectin Assay for Pig Samples

Fecal calprotectin is a noninvasive marker of gut inflammation and has been widely utilizedin human gastrointestinal diagnostics. This marker, however, has not been extensively utilized inporcine samples. The aim of this study was to optimize a protocol for the extraction of porcinefecal calprotectin, and to the best of our knowledge this is the first study to be conducted inthis regard. Freshly collected swine fecal samples were used in this study. We determined thevariability of three commercial ELISA assays in the recovery of porcine fecal calprotectin. Wefurther studied the effect of dilution factor and roller shaker homogenization on the yield ofcalprotectin from swine fecal samples. Calprotectin recovery was significantly different(p<0.05)across the three commercial assays with MBS033848 having a greater recovery compared toDAEF-012 and calprest. Fecal calprotectin yield increased with an increase in dilution factorwith maximum recovery at 1:250. Furthermore, homogenization of fecal sample extracts using aroller shaker for tubes for 30 min led to a 30.75% relative increase in calprotectin yield. Further increase in shaking time(at 60 min) led to a reduced calprotectin recovery. Calprotectinrecovery ratio was 130.8% and 101.4% at 30 min and 60 min homogenization respectively. Inour conclusion, we observed that various factors affect the recovery of porcine fecal calprotectin,and therefore the researcher should double check certain parameters in regard to the type of kit,the dilution factor and homogenization time if reliable and reproducible results are to beobtained. Results of the present study provide useful information on a non-invasive protocol toveterinarians and researchers in examining and monitoring swine gut healthusing the fecalcalprotectin.
Suspensions and polymers - Common links in rheology

Rheological techniques are frequently used to characterize particulate suspensions and polymer systems. Experimental data frequently show that similar trends and characteristics are found in both systems. Using common examples and illustrations of the rheological behaviour, we attempt to bring together these separate fields and investigate the common links in the different systems. In many cases the similar rheological behaviour observed in these different systems can be related to the same basic physical principles.

In the current study, the probiotic potential of approximately 250 strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from piglet fecal samples were investigated; among them Lactobacillus plantarum strain JDFM LP11, which possesses significant probiotic potential, with enhanced acid/bile tolerance, attachment to porcine intestinal epithelial cells (IPEC-J2), and antimicrobial activity. The genetic characteristics of strain JDFM LP11 were explored by performing whole genome sequencing (WGS) using a PacBio system. The circular draft genome have a total length of 3,206,883 bp and a total of 3,021 coding sequences were identified. Phylogenetically, three genes, possibly related to survival and metabolic activity in the porcine host, were identified. These genes encode p60, lichenan permease IIC component, and protein TsgA, which are a putative endopeptidase, a component of the phosphotransferase system (PTS), and a major facilitator in the gut environment, respectively. Our findings suggest that understanding the functional and genetic characteristics of L. plantarum strain JDFM LP11, with its candidate genes for gut health, could provide new opportunities and insights into applications in the animal food and feed additive industries.

We study the decays of the J/ψ and ψ<SUP>'</SUP> mesons to π<SUP>+</SUP>π<SUP>-</SUP>π<SUP>0</SUP> using data samples at both resonances collected with the BES III detector in 2009. We measure the corresponding branching fractions with unprecedented precision and provide mass spectra and Dalitz plots. The branching fraction for J/ψ→π<SUP>+</SUP>π<SUP>-</SUP>π<SUP>0</SUP> is determined to be(2.137+/-0.004 (stat.)<SUB>-0.056</SUB><SUP>+0.058</SUP> (syst.)<SUB>-0.026</SUB><SUP>+0.027</SUP> (norm.))x10<SUP>-2</SUP>, and the branching fraction for ψ<SUP>'</SUP>→π<SUP>+</SUP>π<SUP>-</SUP>π<SUP>0</SUP> is measured as(2.14+/-0.03 (stat.)<SUB>-0.07</SUB><SUP>+0.08</SUP> (syst.)<SUB>-0.08</SUB><SUP>+0.09</SUP> (norm.))x10<SUP>-4</SUP>. The J/ψ decay is found to be dominated by an intermediate ρ(770) state, whereas the ψ<SUP>'</SUP> decay is dominated by di-pion masses around 2.2 GeV/c<SUP>2</SUP>, leading to strikingly different Dalitz distributions.
