Triclosan is an antimicrobial or sanitizing agent used in personal care and household products such as toothpaste, soaps, mouthwashes and kitchen utensils. There are increasing evidence of the potentially harmful effects of triclosan in many systemic and cellular processes of the body. In this study, we investigated the effects of triclosan in the survivability of cultured rat neural stem cells (NSCs). Cortical cells from embryonic day 14 rat embryos were isolated and cultured in vitro. After stabilizing the culture, triclosan was introduced to the cells with concentrations ranging from 1 μM to 50 μM and in varied time periods. Thereafter, cell viability parameters were measured using MTT assay and PI staining. TCS decreased the cell viability of treated NSC in a concentration- dependent manner along with increased expressions of apoptotic markers, cleaved caspase-3 and Bax, while reduced expression of Bcl2. To explore the mechanisms underlying the effects of TCS in NSC, we measured the activation of MAPKs and intracellular ROS. TCS at 50 μM induced the activations of both p38 and JNK, which may adversely affect cell survival. In contrast, the activities of ERK, Akt and PI3K, which are positively correlated with cell survival, were inhibited. Moreover, TCS at this concentration augmented the ROS generation in treated NSC and depleted the glutathione activity. Taken together, these results suggest that TCS can induce neurodegenerative effects in developing rat brains through mechanisms involving ROS activation and apoptosis initiation.

Bombyx mori silkworm has many silkworm varieties and the structure and properties of silk can be varied depending on the silkworm variety. Therefore, the choice of proper silkworm variety can be an effective way to control and improve the performance of silk materials in biomedical and cosmetic applications. As a preliminary study, in the present study, thirty nine Bombyx mori silkworm cocoons were prepared and their molecular conformation and crystallinity were examined. Molecular conformation and the crystallinity of silkworm cocoons were different depending on the silkworm variety. Interestingly, the crystallinity index of outside of cocoon was different from that of inside of cocoon and the difference between the crystallinities of outside and inside of cocoon was varied depending on the silkworm variety. In this study, the silkworm variety cocoons were classified into three groups (Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3) based on the difference of crystallinities between outside and inside.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study measured the effects of a taste education program developed in Korea on food neophobia and willingness to try novel foods in school children. SUBJECTS/METHODS: One-hundred and twenty school children (aged 7-9 years) residing in Seoul participated in 12 sessions of a taste education program for 3 months. The Korean taste education program was adapted from “Les classes du goût” by J. Puisais and modified to suit a Korean education environment. The study subjected school children to pre- and post-programs on food neophobia and willingness to try novel foods (WTNF), in addition to children’s food neophobia in their parents. A total of 101 survey data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. RESULTS: Regarding the effects of taste education, scores of food neophobia significantly decreased (P < 0.01) in the posttest, mean (m) score (4.10 ± 1.19) decreased compared to the pretest (4.39 ± 1.00), and WTNF significantly increased (P < 0.001) in the pretest (m) score (0.48 ± 0.33) compared to the pretest (0.32 ± 0.34). This result indicates verification of the study hypothesis. CONCLUSIONS: Food neophobia scale (FNS), an index that measures personal food preference [1,2], showed a very weak correlation with behavioral willingness to taste novel foods (WTNF). Therefore, it is expected that the two scales measure different things. However, considering that the traits of food neophobia are not easily changed, the taste education program was administered in a remarkably effective manner.
Comparison of sealing ability of different obturation techniques in type II root canals
Bo-Kyung Park,황호길,조형훈 조선대학교 치의학연구원 2019 Oral Biology Research (Oral Biol Res) Vol.43 No.2
This study evaluated the sealing ability of obturation technique in type II root canal through the comparison of the presence of voids between the single-cone technique using calcium silicate-based sealer and continuous wave compaction technique using resin-based sealer. This study used 30 extracted human maxillary single-rooted premolars that were instrumented with rotary nickel-titanium instrument and randomly assigned to two groups. The root canals were obturated with either single-cone technique using calcium silicate-based sealer or with continuous wave compaction technique using resin-based sealer. The presence of voids in the samples in mesio-distal directions were evaluated using radiographs. There were more voids in the total volume and coronal third of the roots in the single-cone technique group than in the continuous wave compaction technique group. However, there was no significant difference in the percentage volume of voids in the middle and apical thirds of the roots between the two groups. Additionally, there was no significant difference between two groups with respect to external voids. Within limitation of this study, single-cone technique with calcium silicate-based sealer should be used very carefully in type II root canals.
Applied Practices on Blockchain based Business Application
Bo Kyung Park 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2021 Journal of Advanced Smart Convergence Vol.10 No.4
With the development of blockchain technology, the scope of blockchain applications has expanded rapidly. Blockchain decentralization allows transaction participants to make transparent and safe transactions without a third trust agency. A distributed ledger-based system enables transparent and trusted business for anonymous users. For this reason, many companies apply blockchain to various fields such as logistics, electronic voting, and real estate. Despite this interest, there are still not enough case studies confirming the potential of blockchain as a concrete business model. Therefore, it is necessary to study how blockchain technology can change the existing business model and connect it to a new business model. In this paper, we propose blockchain-based business models and workflow types in various fields such as healthcare, logistics, and energy. We also present application cases. We expect to help companies apply blockchain to their business.
