Objectives: We investigated whether a mixture of the main component of pomegranate concentrated powder (PCP) with appropriate proportions of Eucommiae Cortex (EC) and Achyranthis Radix (AR) could act synergistically as an effective treatment for osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: In order to evaluate the effects of PCP, EC, and AR against OA, knee thicknesses, maximum extension angle of each knee, anti - inflammation effects, the transcript levels of chondrogenic genes mRNA expressions in femur and tibia articular cartilage (AC) with synovial membrane (SM) were analyzed. In addition, the histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the femur and tibia AC or SM were performed. Results: The surgically-induced OA signs in rats were significantly inhibited by 28 days of continuous treatment of PCP, EC and AR single formulas, and PCP with EC:AR mixed formulas. Especially, PCP with EC:AR 4:1, 2:1 and 1:1 mixed formula treatment constantly showed significantly more favorable inhibitory activities, as compared with those of single formula of PCP, EC and AR treated rats. Conclusion: PCP and EC:AR 4:1 mixed formula showed similar OA refinement effects through potent anti-inflammatory pathways as compared with those of diclofenac treatment, and showed additional chondrocyte proliferating effects on the both femur and tibia AC.

Objectives : The objective of present study is to evaluate anti-arthritic effects of dried pomegranate concentrate powders (PCP), Eucommiae Cortex aqueous (EC) and ethanolic (ECe) extracts, Achyranthis Radix aqueous (AR) and ethanolic (ARe) extracts on the primary cultured rat articular chondrocytes. Methods : MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium Bromide) assay was performed cytotoxic effect of test substances. In addition, anti-inflammatory effects were also observed on the lipopolysaccaride (LPS) treated chondrocytes through prostaglandin $E_2\;(PGE_2)$ production and 5-lipoxygenase (LPO) activities, and inhibitory effects on metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 activities were observed on the recombinant human interleukin $(rhIL)-1{\alpha}$ treated chondrocytes with their extracellular matrix (ECM) related mRNA expressions - collagen type II, SOX9 and aggrecan. Results : As results, ECe and ARe showed obvious cytotoxicity against primary cultured rat articular chondrocytes at a dose level of 10 mg/ml, respectively. However, no obvious cytotoxic effects of PCP, EC and AR were demonstrated at a dose level of 10 mg/ml, on the primary cultured rat articular chondrocytes. In addition, treatment of LPS $50{\mu}g/ml$ induced significant increases of $PGE_2$ contents and 5-LPO activities indicating inflammatory responses of the primary cultured rat articular chondrocytes, and also decreases of cell viabilities, increases of MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities with decreases of extracellular matrix (ECM) related collagen type II, SOX9 and aggrecan mRNA expressions were observed by treatment of $rhIL-1{\alpha}$ 50 ng/ml, suggesting damages on the primary cultured rat articular chondrocytes and related ECM degradations. However, these inflammatory responses and related ECM degradations were inhibited by pretreatment of all test substances, in order of PCP > ECe > ARe > EC > AR, and $rhIL-1{\alpha}$ induced chondrocytes deaths are inhibited by treatment in order of PCP > EC > AR > ECe > ARe. Conclusions : Taken together, it is expected that mixed formulation of PCP as main components with appropriate proportion of EC and AR as additional components will be achieved a potent alternative medicinal food for osteoarthritis.
경북 북부지역 마을숲의 실태 연구 -안동시, 예천군, 봉화군지역 대상으로-

본 연구는 경상북도 북부지역(안동, 예천, 봉화) 3개 시·군지역을 대상으로 20개소의 마을 숲에 대한 연구를 실시하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 비보기능 숲은 안동시의 하회리 숲, 온혜리 숲 2개소이고, 엽승이 봉화군의 거촌2리 숲, 안동시의 천전리 숲, 예천군에 금곡리 숲 3개소로 조사되었고, 성황기능 숲으로는 봉화군 개단1리, 해저1리, 복지2리 숲 3개소이고, 수구막이 숲은 예천군 백송리, 봉화군 압동3리로 2개소이다. 기타 마을숲은 안동 신석리, 광연리, 단호리, 마애리, 소산리, 봉화군 오록1리 6개소로 조사되었다. 둘째, 북부 내륙지역 마을숲에는 소나무, 느티나무, 왕버들이 주류를 이루는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 본 연구에서 소실된 마을숲을 발견하였다. 먼저 소실된 마을숲은 4개소로서 안동시의 개곡리, 수곡리, 계평리 숲, 예천군의 중평리 숲 등으로 밝혀졌다. 넷째, 본 연구에서 마을숲의 관리의 개선방안은 마을숲 내에 설치된 시설물을 제거하고 원래 기능에 맞게 복원해야 하며, 관리 주체를 숲관리 전문가로 교체하거나 현재관리자를 지속적으로 교육시킬 필요가 있다. The purpose of this study was to survey 20 village forests in the northern inland part of Gyeongbuk Province (Andong, Yecheon and Bonghwa). The results of this study can be summed up as follows; First, 2 forests(Hahoi and Onhoi villages in Andong) function primarily as ``Bibo`` or Feng Shui(geomancy) supplement, 3 forests(Geochon 2 village in Bonghwa, Cheonjeon village in Andong and Geumgok village in Yecheon) function primarily as ``Yeopseung`` or evil spirit restrainer, another 3 forests(Gaedan 1, Haejeo 1 and Bokji 2 villages in Bonghwa) function primarily as ``Seonghwang`` or village shrine and 2 forests(Baeksong village in Yecheon and Apdong 3 village in Bonghwa) function primarily as ``Sugumagi`` or terra energy retainer. The other 6 forests(Sinseok, Gwangyeon, Danho, Mae and Sosan villages in Andong and Orok 1 village in Bonghwa) function just as windbreak, etc. Second, the sample forests consist primarily of pine trees, zelkovas and willows. Third, 4 lost village forests have been identified: Gaegok, Sugok and Gyepyeong villages in Andong and Jungpyeong village in Yecheon. Fourth, in order to improve the management of village forests, it is deemed necessary to remove the facilities from the forests and restore the original functions of the village forests. To this effect, the current forest managers need to be replaced with professionals or educated on the management of forests continuously.
