      • Condition assessment of aged underground water tanks-Case study

        Zafer Sakka,Ali Saleh,Thamer Al-Yaqoub,Hasan Karam,Shaikha AlSanad,Jamal Al-Qazweeni,Mohammad Mosawi,Husain Al-Baghli 국제구조공학회 2024 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.90 No.5

This paper presents the methodology and results for the investigation of the structural safety of 40 aged underground water tanks to support the weight of photovoltaic (PV) systems that were supposed to be placed on their roof reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. The investigation procedure included (1) review of available documents; (2) visual inspection of the roof RC slabs; (3) carrying out a series of nondestructive (ND) tests; and (4) analysis of results. Out of the 40 tanks, eleven failed the visual inspection phase and were discarded from further investigation. The roof RC slabs of the tanks that passed the visual inspection were subjected to a series of ND tests that included infrared thermography, impact echo, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), Schmidt hammer, concrete core compressive strength, and water-soluble chloride content. The NDT results proved that eight more tanks were not suitable to support the PV systems. Based on the results of the visual inspection and testing, a probabilistic decision-making criterion was established to reach a decision regarding the structural integrity of the roof slabs. The study concluded that the condition of the drainage filter was essential in protecting the tanks and its intact presence can be used as a strong indication of the structural integrity of the roof RC slabs.

      • HYBRID LIGHT DUTY VEHICLES EVALUATION PROGRAM

        R. TRIGUI,F. BADIN,B. JEANNERET,F. HAREL,G. COQUERY,R. LALLEMAND,JP. OUSTEN,M. CASTAGNE,M. DEBEST,E. GITTARD,F. VANGRAEFSHEPE,V. MOREL,L. BAGHLI,A.REZZOUG,J.LABBE,S. BISCAGLIA 한국자동차공학회 2003 International journal of automotive technology Vol.4 No.2

A HEV evaluation program, funded by ADEME, was carried out by a group of Laboratories of different specialties in order to evaluate and compare consumption, emission and component technologies of the three first HEVs put on the market (Toyota Prius, Nissan Tino and Honda Insight). This paper presents the results obtained until now. These results show good consumption and emission performance of the tested vehicles compared to conventional ones. The energy management seems to be globally the same for the three vehicles excepting for cold starts where the Insight allows a very earlier stop of the engine compared to the Tino and especially to the Prius. A mapping of the engine consumption of the Prius and the Insight was performed in order to furnish data for the simulation models. The Permanent Magnet motors of the Prius and Tino have different number of pair poles and then different emf at a given speed. The low emf values of the Prius allow operation at high speed with less field weakening control than for the Tino. The inverters of the Prius and the Tino, controlled by a PWM at respectively 5 kHz and 7 kHz. switching frequency, are made of IGBTs with high commutation performances.

Determinants of Corporate Cash Holdings Among Asia’s Emerging and Frontier Markets

Tanveer BAGH,Muhammad Asif KHAN,Natanya MEYER,Rashid SADIQ,Sebastian KOT 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.6

The determinants of Corporate Cash Holdings (CCH) have been a deep-seated debate among institutions and scholars over the last couple of years. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the determinants of CCH among emerging and frontier markets (Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan). Due to endogeneity, the generalized methods of moments (GMM) methodology was applied to capture the impacts of different variables, including profitability, firm size, financial leverage growth opportunity, dividend payout, and the business cycle on CCH. The result shows that the firm’s size positively enhances CCH in emerging and frontier markets. Growth opportunity is negatively influenced by CCH in the case of Bangladeshi firms while a positive driver in emerging markets. The business cycle has a negative bearing on CCH across Pakistan, India, and Bangladeshi firms while positive and significant in Chinese firms. Financial leverage and dividend payout were positive determinants of CCH in Chinese firms, while they appear negative for Pakistan, India and Bangladeshi firms. Finally, profitability has a positive and significant impact on CCH in frontier and emerging markets. The study contributes to the incumbent determinants of CCH literature by introducing a fresh outlook and offering policy insights helpful in emerging and frontier markets perspectives.

Molecular Progress in Sugar Beet Breeding for Resistance to Biotic Stresses in Sub-Arid Conditions- Current Status and Perspectives

Peyman Norouzi, Piergiorgio Stevanato, Seyed Bagher Mahmoudi, Parviz F 한국작물학회 2017 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.20 No.2

The yield of sugar beet depends mainly on the effective protection to a number of pests and diseases affecting the crop. In the absence of actual methods of management, as in the case of viral diseases, the availability of genetic resistance sometimes allows the survival of the crop in the affected areas. Integration of molecular markers in conventional breeding procedures has provided a reliable means for improving the efficiency of selection methods. The present review summarizes the evolution, thanks to the application of molecular techniques, of traditional breeding for resistance to some biotic stresses in sub-arid environments.

Effect of thermal radiation and magnetic field on heat transfer of SWCNT/water nanofluid inside a partially heated hexagonal cavity

        Alizadeh Milad,Fazlollahtabar Amin,Hussein Ahmed Kadhim,Ameen Hussein Ali,Ganji D. D.,Biswal Uddhaba,Ali Bagh 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.10

The interaction between the magneto-hydrodynamic buoyant convection and the radiation in a partly heated hexagonal enclosed space filled with SWCNTs/water nanoliquid was inspected in the current work for the first time. The lowermost wall of the enclosed space was partially heated, while the other regions of this wall were presumed thermally insulated. The upper wall was considered insulated also. The four inclined walls of the enclosed space were maintained at a constant cold temperature. A magnetic field with magnitude, Bo is enforced on the enclosed space. The enclosed space was included inside it a concave hexagonal shaped body under three different conditions at its boundary namely (cold, adiabatic and heated). The outcomes of the present work are obtained for diverse Hartmann number, Rayleigh number varied as 104≤Ra≤106, heated region length varied as 0.1≤LT≤0.4, various conditions of the internal hexagonal body (cold, adiabatic and heated), solid volume fraction diverse as 0≤φ≤0.04 and radiation parameter varied as 0≤Rd≤1. In the present work, the standard Galerkin finite element method (SGFEM) is employed to model the fluid flow and heat transfer. It is established that the Nusselt number along the heated bottom wall of the hexagonal enclosed space (Nuout) rises as Rayleigh number rises. The same increasing is seen for the velocity distribution along vertically mean position. The stream function and Nuout decrease as the Hartmann number increases. The stream function, temperature and velocity have the maximum profiles at the heated condition followed by the adiabatic one, while the cold condition has the minimum profile.
