Effect of Compositional Parameters on the Characteristics of C-SiC-$B_4C$ Composites
Aggarwal, R.K.,Bhatia, G.B.,Saha, M.,Mishra, A. Korean Carbon Society 2004 Carbon Letters Vol.5 No.4
Carbon-ceramic composites refer to a special class of carbon based materials which cover the main drawbacks of carbon, particularly its proneness to air oxidation, while essentially retaining its outstanding properties. In the present paper, the authors report the results of a systematic study made towards the development of C-SiC-$B_4C$ composites, which involves the effects of compositional parameters, namely, carbon-to-ceramic and ceramic-to-ceramic ratios, on the oxidation behaviour as well as other characteristics of these composites. The C-SiC-$B_4C$ composites, heat-treated to $1400^{\circ}C$, have shown that their oxidation behaviour at temperatures of 800~$1200^{\circ}C$ depends jointly on the total ceramic content and the SiC : $B_4C$ ratio. Good compositions of C-SiC-$B_4C$ composites exhibiting zero weight loss in air at temperatures of 800~$1200^{\circ}C$ for periods of 4~9 h, have been identified. Composites with these compositions undergo a weight gain or a maximum weight loss of less than 3% during the establishment of a protective layer at the surface of carbon in a period of 1~6 h. Significant improvement in the strength of C-SiC-$B_4C$ composites has been observed which increases with an increase in the total ceramic content and also with an increase in the SiC : $B_4C$ ratio.

The chloroform extract of the seeds of Carica papaya has been screened for the hormonal properties using ovariectomized female rats for estrogenicity, estrogen primed immature rats for progestogenicity and castrated adult male rats for androgenicity. The results revealed that the extract lacks progestogenicity and androgenicity as evident from the failure of the extract treated animals to mimic progestogen and androgen related changes in the target tissues. The increased weight of vagina and uterus, open status of vagina, cornified and epithelial cells in the vaginal smears and hypertrophy in the uterine epithelium, endometrium and stroma with increased glycogen and sialic acid content in the uterus of the chloroform extract treated animals, which are comparable to those of the ovariectomized estrogen treated animals, suggest that the chloroform extract possesses mild estrogenic activity.

Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) gene is a structural gene associated with the growth and development of the animals. The present investigation was carried out to unravel nucleotide sequence and polymerase chain reactionrestriction fragment polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) of IGFBP-3 gene in buffalo. Genomic DNA was isolated from a total of 157 animals belonging to Murrah, Surti, Jaffarabadi and Nagpuri breeds of Indian riverine buffalo. A 655 bp of IGFBP-3 gene was amplified in all the breeds and amplicons were digested with Hae III, Taq I and Msp I restriction enzymes. On digestion with Hae III yielded single restriction pattern of 8 fragments of sizes 201, 165, 154, 56, 36, 19, 16 and 8 bp in all the animals studied. Similarly Taq I and Msp I also revealed single restriction pattern yielding fragments of sizes 240 and 415 bp and 145 and 510 bp, respectively. This shows nonpolymorphic nature of restriction sites in buffalo. Nucleotide sequencing of 587 bp of IGFBP-3 gene in Murrah buffalo was done and submitted to the GenBank (Accession No. AY304829). Nucleotide sequencing revealed an addition of 4 bases in the intronic region as compared to cattle.

Ten improved mulberry varieties (V1, C1730, C2016, C2017, Anantha, RFS-175, Thallaghatapura, Vishala, S1 and S1635) were evaluated through enzyme assay and estimation of soluble protein content followed by regression analysis, grown under irrigated conditions in the alluvial soils of Gangetic plains of West Bengal in India for five successive crops in a year. The nitrate reductase (EC No. 1.6.6.1) activity (NRA, mmol NO2 - h-1g-1 fr. wt.), total soluble protein (mg g-1 fr. wt.) was estimated which showed to vary significantly in the tested varieties. In addition to these, the other parameters like unit leaf fresh and dry weight (g), moisture%, unit leaf area (cm2), specific leaf weight (g cm-2), total soluble sugar (mg g-1 fr. wt.), leaf yield/plant (kg), shoot yield/plant (kg) and net photosynthetic rate (NPR, mmol m-2 s-1) were also studied which showed to vary significantly in tested varieties. Among them, S1635, having higher NRA (13.25 mmol NO2 - h-1g-1 fr. wt.), total soluble protein (39.63 mg g-1 fr. wt.), NPR (16.66 mmol m-2 s-1), total soluble sugar (48.44 mg g-1 fr. wt.), leaf yield/plant (0.689 kg) and shoot yield/plant (1.135 kg) showed its superiority over other tested varieties. Regression and correlation coefficients were analysed, and a strong positive correlation was found between NRA & total soluble protein, NRA & NPR, NRA & total soluble sugar, NRA & unit leaf weight, NRA & specific leaf weight, NRA & leaf yield/plant, NRA & shoot yield/plant, NPR & leaf yield and NPR & specific leaf weight.

ENHANCEMENT OF FERROMAGNETISM IN NANOCRYSTALLINE Zn_(1-x)Cu_xO (0.03 ≤ x ≤ 0.07)
JYOSHNARANI MOHAPATRA,D. K. MISHRA,P. K. MISHRA,B. P. BAG,S. K. SINGH 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2011 NANO Vol.6 No.4
We report room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) in nanocrystalline Zn1-xCuxO (0.03 ≤ x ≤ 0.07) materials synthesized by autocombustion technique. The average particle sizes are in the range of 60 nm. The saturation magnetization and coercivity of 7% Cu-doped ZnO is enhanced significantly in comparison to 3% and 5% Cu-doped ZnO. There is not much variation in the optical band gap due to Cu doping, thus suggesting the uniform distribution of Cu in the ZnO matrix. Micro-Raman and photoluminescence analysis predict the presence of clusters of oxygen vacancies in Cu-doped system which improves with the increase in Cu concentration. This study provides further evidence that oxygen vacancies play an important role in the enhancement of room temperature ferromagnetic property in Cu-doped ZnO.

We report the H2 and LPG gas sensing behavior of RGO/SnO2 QDs synthesized by a surfactant assisted hydrothermal method. The RGO/SnO2 QD based sensor shows a high response of 89.3% to H2 and 92.4% to LPG for 500 ppm test gas concentration at operating temperatures of 200 C and 250 C, respectively. Further, the RGO/SnO2 QD based sensor shows good selectivity for H2 and LPG in the presence of other interfering gases such as ammonia, chloroform, toluene, benzene, acetone, n-butylacetate, acetic acid and formic acid. We observed that the gas response to H2 is 29.8 times higher than that to acetic acid whereas the gas response to LPG is 17.8 times higher than that to formic acid. Long-term analyses have also been performed to demonstrate the reproducible nature of the RGO/SnO2 QD based sensor over passing time which shows excellent reproducibility.
