Occlusion-Robust Segmentation for Multiple Objects using a Micro Air Vehicle

This paper presents a novel object extraction method using a micro air vehicle (MAV) for improving the robustness of occlusion. The proposed method is based on saliency of objects for extracting regions of interest (RoIs) using scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) features and segmentation of target objects using GrabCut, which requires advance learning. We obtained original aerial photographic time-series image datasets using a MAV. Results of experiments revealed that object extraction accuracies measured using precision, recall, and F-measure improved according to the MAV movement for images with changing rates of collusion between two objects: a chair and a table. Especially for images of a chair, which is smaller than the table, our method functioned well for the extraction of object regions. For improving extraction accuracy based on the result to extract the table, an advanced mechanism combined with flight patterns is necessary to adjust the suitable distance between the MAV and a target object.

A continuous composite oxygen isotope (δ<SUP>18</SUP>O) stratigraphy from benthic foraminifera in the Bering Sea was reconstructed in order to provide insight into understanding sea-ice evolution in response to Northern Hemisphere Glaciation. Oxygen isotope records from multiple species of benthic foraminifera at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 323 Site U1343 (54<SUP>o</SUP>33.4'N, 176<SUP>o</SUP>49.0'E, water depth 1950m) yield a highly refined orbital-scale age model spanning the last 1.2Ma, and a refined age model between 1.2 and 2.4Ma. An inter-species calibration was used to define species offsets and to successfully obtain a continuous composite benthic δ<SUP>18</SUP>O record, correlated with the global composite benthic δ<SUP>18</SUP>O stack curve LR04 to construct an orbital-scale age model. The consistency of the benthic δ<SUP>18</SUP>O stratigraphy with biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy confirms the reliability of both methods for constraining age. The time difference between cyclic changes in sedimentary physical properties and glacial-interglacial cycles since 0.8Ma is notable, and suggests that physical properties alone cannot be used to construct an orbital-scale age model. Amplitude changes in physical properties and a significant drop in the linear sedimentation rate during glacials after 0.9Ma indicate that the glacial sea-ice edge extended beyond the Bering Sea Slope (Site U1343) at this time.
Chemical Bonding State of Sulfur in Oxysulfide Glasses

Simple binary $Na_2S-SiO_2$ oxysulfide glasses were prepared by a conventional melt-quench method in order to investigate the role of sulfur in glass structure and the electronic state. By X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) measurement, S2p binding energy of the glass was observed at approximately 161eV which was close to that of ionic $S^{2-}$. The coordinating state around silicon atoms were investigated by ${29}^Si$ MAS-NMR measurement. The chemical shift observed from NMR supported that sulfur atom was joined to a silicon atom by substituting for an oxygen atom and was present as a non-bridging sulfide ion in low alkali content. On the other hand, it could be presumed that a portion of sulfur anions existed in an isolated state from the glass-network frame at high alkali content. The state of these sulfurs was also studied by Raman spectroscopy in detail.
Evaluation of Magnetic and Thermal Properties of Ferrite Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Magnetic nanoparticles can potentially be used in drug delivery systems and for hyperthermia therapy. The applicability of Fe₃O₄, CoFe₂O₄, MgFe₂O₄, and NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles for the same was studied by evaluating their magnetization, thermal efficiency, and biocompatibility. Fe₃O₄ and CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles exhibited large magnetization. Fe₃O₄ and NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles exhibited large induction heating. MgFe₂O₄ nanoparticles exhibited low magnetization compared to the other nanoparticles. NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were found to be cytotoxic, whereas the other nanoparticles were not cytotoxic. This study indicates that Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles could be the most suitable ones for hyperthermia therapy.

A new digital control method for permanent magnet synchronous motor based on deadbeat control using FPGA based hardware controller is proposed. Using the discrete time model of PMSM, the deadbeat control law is derived using a model inverse solution. The superior calculation capability of FPGA realize the ideal digital control feedback system without any sampling compensation method. The verification of the proposed method were carried out through simulations and experiments.
Studies on the characterization of sulfur and coloration in borosilicate glasses

Ternary alkali borosilicate glasses containing sulfur were prepared by a conventional melt quenching method, and their chemical bonding states were investigated based on XPS and 29Si,11B MAS-NMR measurement. The glass samples changed in color from blue to reddish brown due to the state of the sulfur and their glass compositions. From S2p photoelectron spectra, it can be seen that the sulfur exists with a negative charge in the glass. The forming of non-bridging oxygen components was observed from O1s photoelectron spectra of the glasses, which colored to brown and reddish brown. Furthermore, a signal from silicon atoms coordinated to the sulfur was detected in these glasses by the 29Si MAS-NMR measurement. From these results, it is considered that sulfur atoms bonded silicon atoms at the forming range of the non-bridging oxygen component. Globalization has been discussed as an important market environment in various territories. Maritime industry is also closely associated with globalization. Together with globalization, faster, more reliable, and cheaper maritime transport services have facilitated the expansion of global trade. With the development of emerging economies, the maritime industry had increased dramatically. The rise of China as the world manufacturing center was a key driver of this growth. Since 2008, however, there have been some declines because of the global financial crisis. It is not easy for container ports to have a sufficient container cargo volumes including transshipment. Therefore, container ports in individual countries require effective strategies for generating sufficient container traffic. Through a country-level analysis, this paper is designed to empirically investigate the influences of globalization on individual container ports` internal capabilities and transshipment traffic volumes.
New III-V-based Magnetic Semiconductors and Quantum Nanostructures

III-V-based magnetic semiconductors are new functional materials that are expected to lead to the introduction of spin degree-of-freedom for semiconductor devices. This paper describes (1) InMnAsSb/InSb magnetic semiconductor heterostructures and mid-infrared light-induced ferromagnetism, (2) GaN-based magnetic semiconductor GaCrN and high temperature ($>$ 400 K) ferromagnetism and photoluminescence emission, and (3) Mn-including InAs quantum dot structures.
