Objectives: Genomic markers linked to exercise-associated health benefits and/or sporting performance are increasingly used to guide decision-making in healthcare and sport/exercise science. This project investigated whether the IL-6R SNP “rs2228145” might be provisionally designated a novel physical activity/exercise marker. rs2228145 results in an Aspartate358/Alanine358 change adjacent to the site where the IL-6R protein is cleaved into two fragments, resulting in ~two-fold increases in blood-borne levels of soluble IL-6R [‘sIL-6R’]. Methods: Cohorts of staff/students at Cardiff Metropolitan University donated/completed: [i] finger-prick capillary blood samples (subjected to ELISAs for sIL-6R, the associated signalling protein sgp130, and the IL-6/sIL-6R complex); [ii] cheek-swab samples containing buccal epithelial cell DNA (subjected to PCR-based IL-6R/rs2228145 genotyping assays); [iii] International Physical Activity Questionnaires (to estimate physical activity levels in the week preceding sample donation). Results: As expected, we observed significant genotype-dependent differences in blood-borne sIL-6R levels (CC (44.1±21.7ng/mL) vs. AC (28.6±7.3ng/mL) vs. AA (19.9±6.5ng/mL; P<0.05)); Importantly, AA homozygotes undertook significantly more physical activity than AC heterozygotes (6318±899 v. 3904±2280 MET-mins/week; P<0.01). Genotype was significantly associated with physical activity levels (P<0.05), and sIL-6R (P=0.197) and sgp130 (P=0.160) showed non-significant correlations with physical activity levels. Conclusions: These data suggest that IL-6R/rs2228145 genotype may influence participation in physical activity/exercise, perhaps by impacting on abilities to tolerate activity without experiencing adverse-effects. Although more research is required to confirm these preliminary findings, designation of IL-6R/rs2228145 as a novel marker, and determination of participants’ IL-6R/rs2228145 genotypes, may in future be useful tools to aid exercise-providers in designing personalised exercise programmes matched to clients/patients.
Korean Student Perceptions of a CANVAS Based EFL Class During COVID-19: A Case Study

This study was designed to examine the feelings and perceptions of English learners at a Korean university towards using CANVAS as an online teaching medium during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected from 129 students enrolled at a university in the greater Seoul area. A survey questionnaire consisting of a combination of multiple choice, Likert scale and open-ended questions was used as the primary data collection method. In addition, if consent was given, survey participants were contacted by e-mail to discuss responses in further detail. Data was analyzed using general qualitative analysis and discussed using descriptive statistics. The findings show that despite pandemic related disruption and some feelings of frustration related to the efficiency of the system, students were able to adapt quickly to using CANVAS as their main learning interface and were generally satisfied with it. In addition, they relied on a specific number of CANVAS functions which helped with the learning process and improvement of English ability. Administrational and educational implications of these findings as well as limitations are also discussed.
Towards a Slime Mould-FPGA Interface

Purpose The plasmodium of slime mould Physarumpolycephalum is a multinucleate single celled organism whichbehaves as a living amorphous unconventional computingsubstrate. As an excitable, memristive cell that typicallyassumes a branching or stellate morphology, slime mould isa unique model organism that shares many key properties ofmammalian neurons. There are numerous studies that revealthe computing abilities of the plasmodium realized by theformation of tubular networks connecting points of interest. Recent research demonstrating typical responses in electricalbehaviour of the plasmodium to certain chemical and physicalstimuli has generated interest in creating an interface betweenP. polycephalum and digital logic, with the aim to performcomputational tasks with the resulting device. Methods Through a range of laboratory experiments, wemeasure plasmodial membrane potential via a non-invasivemethod and use this signal to interface the organism with adigital system. Results This digital system was demonstrated to performpredefined basic arithmetic operations and is implemented ina field-programmable gate array (FPGA). These basic arithmeticoperations, i.e. counting, addition, multiplying, use data thatwere derived by digital recognition of membrane potentialoscillation and are used here to make basic hybrid biologicalartificialsensing devices. Conclusions We present here a low-cost, energy efficientand highly adaptable platform for developing next-generationmachine-organism interfaces. These results are therefore applicable to a wide range of biological/medical and computing/electronics fields.

This article presents an initial review of research (published in English) on the impact, internationally, of English as an additional language (EAL) provision in the school sector. The impact is on English language learners (ELL): children and young people for whom English is an additional language and who are thought to need extra help with English to succeed in the school system. The review looks not only at the impact on children and young people, but also at the nature and efficacy of the teacher workforce, concluding that there are several gaps in provision and in research in the field.
The use of CANVAS LMS in remote academic EFL writing classes: Its benefits and limitations

The purpose of this study is to explore how English instructors at a Korean university utilized the CANVAS learning management system (LMS) when teaching EFL academic writing classes online, and their perceptions of its effectiveness and limitations. Seventeen instructors working at a university located on the outskirts of Seoul participated. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire consisting of a combination of multiple choice, a 5-point Likert scale, and open ended questions, all of which were used as the primary data collection method. Data analysis was conducted using general qualitative analysis for the open ended questions and descriptive statistics for the multiple choice and 5-point Likert scale questions. The findings of the study indicate such tools and functions as Lecture Contents, Inbox, Announcements, Assignments, Learn Status, Assignment Comment, and Speed Grader were used frequently on CANVAS, which was also related to the instructors’ high levels of satisfaction with this LMS in the areas of sharing course content, managing a classroom (e.g., monitoring students’ learning activities and communicating with students), and administering assignments and exams. On the other hand, the instructors reported that they used such tools and functions as Collaborations and Discussion less on Canvas, which matched their relatively low satisfaction with CANVAS in writing related areas such as grading, giving feedback, sharing peer feedback, and doing collaborative writing activities. Administrational and educational implications of these findings are discussed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean university students’ perceptions of how the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technology (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Augmented Reality/ Virtual Reality) will contribute to current and future general English (GE) education at Korean universities in the era of 4IR. Data were collected from 177 university students who were taking GE classes at a Korean university at the time this study was conducted, and a survey questionnaire which includes multiple choice, Likert scale, and open-ended questions, was used as the main data collection method. Data were analyzed by following descriptive statistics and the general qualitative data analysis method. The findings of this study show that students perceive that some, but not all problems that current GE classes have could be fixed by the 4IR technology. In addition, they believe that the development of 4IR technology will drive a change of the future GE education, but some aspects of current GE classes (e.g., their mandatory status at university and learning in an offline context) and the roles of human agents (e.g., students’ ownership of their English learning and human teachers’ different roles to AI teachers’) should be valued in the future GE classes. Educational Implications of the findings and limitations of the study are also discussed.
