IT Entry Knowledge and Skills of UniversityTeachers vis‐à‐vis their Interest Levels: The Case of the Oldest University in Asia

Allan B. de Guzman,Camilla J. Vizconde 서울대학교 교육연구소 2004 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.5 No.2

Technology, considered as the new language of teaching and learning, is an irrevocable reality. Any institution of higher learning is expected to look into the future without losing sight of its core capabilities-the malleability of its faculty members. Today, more than ever, teachers are expected to operate in an environment where “hi-teach”, “hi-touch” and “hi-tech” govern their instructional behaviors. It is in this light that this study was conducted to situate teachers coming from a time-tested institution, such as the University of Santo Tomas, the oldest university in Asia, in terms of their IT knowledge, skills, and interests with a view to identifying implications on how faculty development programs may be made more responsive to the present-day educational structure.

The university of Santo Tomas Viewed from the Lens of Total Quality Management: Implications to Total Quality Education

Allan B. de Guzman,Josefina R. Torres 서울대학교 교육연구소 2004 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.5 No.1

Considered as a major management approach for improving organizational performance and competitive advantage, Total Quality Management (TQM) poses a challenge to dynamic institutions to adopt a systemic philosophy that places emphasis on customer needs and a commitment to a culture of excellence. Higher education institutions (HEIs) as learning organizations are expected to respond proactively to this challenge by examining closely how their educational centerpiece operates in an environment of quality. This inquiry aims to determine how the oldest university in Asia implements TQM as regards its Vision, Involvement, Continuous Improvement, Training and Education, Ownership, Reward, Yearning for Success, and Customer Focus (VICTORY-C). Moreover, it documents the best practices of the institution under study, categorized in the light of TQM principles and identifies implications for total quality education.

From Teaching from the Heart to Teaching with a Heart: Segmenting Filipino College Students' Views of their Teachers' Caring Behavior and their Orientations as Cared-for Individuals

Allan B. de Guzman 서울대학교 교육연구소 2008 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.9 No.4

Caring, as a universal human phenomenon, should permeate elementary, secondary and tertiary level instruction. The practice of leaching, especially at the tertiary level, is not only substantial and procedural but relational as well. To teach with a heart is the essence that makes teaching a form of caring. When teaching is viewed as a form of caring, teachers become relational geniuses in their own right. This study is all attempt to segment Filipino college students' views (n=1000) of their teachers' caring behavior and their orientations as cared-for individuals. The identified clusters of teacher roles that indicate caring behavior imply that acts of leaching become acts of caring depending oil how the teachers, the efficient cause of education, perform their ordinary tasks in the context of extraordinariness. Such extraordinariness spells out a big difference in the way teachers practice the so-called single loop caring or caring visibility and double-loop caring or caring presence. The former refers to teaching from the heart while the latter pertains to teaching with a heart. Interestingly, the extent to which teachers' caring behavior is felt and experienced by the students positively shapes their orientations as cared-for individuals.

Employment and employability profile of a select group of Filipino college graduates

Allan B. de Guzman,Belinda V. de Castro 한국교육개발원 2008 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.5 No.1

Graduates are exhorted to develop personal skills, qualities, and experiences that enable them to compete in the labor market (Moreau & Leathwood, 2006; McQuid & Lindsay, 2005). This graduate tracer study (GTS) creates an empirical portrait that describes the employment aspects of the graduates of a comprehensive university in the Philippines during the years 2001‐2004 to identify policy imperatives for greater relevance of higher education curricula to industry needs and expectations. A sample of 540 randomly selected graduates representing various disciplines participated in this study. Data were gathered through a survey instrument developed by a pool of experts identified by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines. Data were treated in‐depth through descriptive and inferential statistics. Graduates of the institution under study pursue advanced studies and other work‐related training. The impressive employability profile of comprehensive university graduates to middle level management positions particularly those representing the social behavioral sciences, natural sciences, medical fields, engineering and technology and mass communication is brought about not by the academic honors of the graduates but through capabilities such as knowledge, skills and attitudes used in work places. There is a need to develop a more functional framework for employability where the diversity of fields of study offered in universities are linked to the diversity of employment is also discussed in this paper.

When is similar different? When is different similar? A review of language assessment foci of selected Philippine English language textbooks

        Allan B. de Guzman,Rowena Marie R. Chua,Geline R. Cruz,Jeanno Lorenz G. Dinglasan,Mary Noll P. Giliberte,Mary Anne G. Martin 한국교육개발원 2012 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.9 No.2

The centrality of textbooks in basic education calls for periodic assessment of their pedagogical, substantial and assessment features, thus ensuring optimum development of students—the end-users of all educational efforts. Cognizant of the fact that textbooks define the backbone of “micro” organizations for classroom activities (Schmidt, McKnight, & Raizen, 1997), this exploratory undertaking is aimed at identifying the dominant emphasis of a select group of Philippine textbooks in English with regards to macro skills, facets of understanding, and learning strategies. A total of 12 textbooks across four curriculum levels published from 2004 to 2006were subjected to content analysis. Results indicate that Philippine English language textbooks put a premium on the writing and reading skills of students. There is continuing emphasis on the knowledge aspect of language assessment strategies, leaning toward behaviorism. Cognitive strategies are extensively employed along with memory strategies. Policy implications of the study are also discussed in this paper.

Why go into teaching? Understanding Filipino preservice teachers’ reasons for entering teacher education

Arleen B. Hao,Allan B. de Guzman 한국교육개발원 2007 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.4 No.2

This study investigates Filipino preservice teachers’ reasons for deciding to enter teacher education and then relates these reasons to demographic characteristics. A factor analysis of the responses from Philippine teacher education institutions indicated eight motives for pursuing the teaching profession, which in predominant order are idealistic, migratory, developmental, employment security and stability, supremacy, liberating, altruistic, and perpetual. Motives mostly affected by students’ demographic characteristics pertain to the idealistic and the altruistic. The migratory factors appeared to prevail independently because they did not indicate any relationship or dependence on any other student variables. Findings of the study are expected to indicate needed improvements in policies, particularly in student recruitment, selection, and retention, as well as in pedagogical practices in tertiary education.

Push and pull factors affecting Filipino students’ Shadow Education (SE) participation

Belinda V. de Castro,Allan B. de Guzman 한국교육개발원 2010 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.7 No.1

While a number of national studies have been conducted in various parts of the globe, determinant patterns of shadow education (SE) in the Philippines is still unknown. This study aims to establish preliminary data on the factors that determine SE participation of a select group of 1,235 Filipino basic education students. Respondents were asked to accomplish a researcher-made instrument (Cronbach α = 93.5%), wherein data was treated in-depth through descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that despite the rising education cost vis-à-vis students’ socio-economic status, there exist a number of factors that determine Filipino students continued SE participation. Such factors can be used as basis in curricular and instructional restructuring and in strengthening the dynamics between school and community partnership.

A structural equation model (SEM) of the impact of transformational, visionary, charismatic and ethical leadership styles on the development of wise leadership among Filipino private secondary school principals

Marishirl Parco-Tropicales,Allan B. de Guzman 서울대학교 교육연구소 2014 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.15 No.4

In recent years, wisdom is seen as a key resource for school leaders in dealing with the dynamics of the changing school environments. This study purports to expand the growing interest on wisdom by testing a model that describes the impact of transformational, visionary, charismatic and ethical leadership styles on wise leadership development among a select group of 320 Filipino secondary school principals through structural equation modeling. A multi-aspect questionnaire was used to characterize the respondent principals’ leadership orientation and styles. Specifically, the following adapted tools were used: the Transformational Leadership Behavior Inventory, the Ethical Leadership Scale, the Charismatic Leadership Scale, the Visionary Leadership Scale and the Wisdom Development Scale. Results of the structural equation model revealed that: (1) each of the four types of leadership has a significant positive impact on wise leadership development, (2) high charismatic qualities of principals could lead to higher capability for wise leadership, (3) transformational and visionary leadership appeared to have the most impact on wise leadership development and (4) five pairs of leadership styles (visionary and charismatic, charismatic and ethical, transformational and ethical, transformational and visionary, and transformational and charismatic) when any of them is practiced by the school principals indicate stronger effect on wise leadership. Implications for practice, theory and policy are also discussed in this paper.

      • Information Technology Needs and Benefits in Multi-Unit Restaurants

Baek Seung-Hee,Guzman Allan B. de The Korean Society of Community Nutrition 2006 Journal of community nutrition Vol.8 No.3

This study attempted to investigate and compare the level of needs and expected benefits of information technology(IT) applications in restaurant operation from managerial and employee levels. Self-competence levels, education and training needs, and the company IT application levels were evaluated. The respondents for the study were the staff of full-service, mid-scale restaurants owned by a firm. Among the respondents, 17.6% were in managerial level(managers) and 82.4% were in employee level(employees). The results of this study indicated that compared to employees, managers perceived more in-depth that IT is beneficial and is needed in restaurant operation. Both groups rated IT as very much needed and beneficial to restaurant operation. However, managers rated their own technological competence significantly higher than the employees did. Both groups expressed the desire for IT training and education although the managers' needs were stronger than the other group. The company's IT application level was assessed by the managers and employees at a slightly higher than average score on a 5-point scale, showing no difference between the groups. The study findings show that the respondents perceived the IT needs and benefits than the present IT application level of restaurants, which suggests more IT applications be adopted to the restaurant operations.
