Bioremoval of reactive dye Remazol Navy by kefir grains

Ali Osman Erdoğdular,Dilek Kılıç Apar 한국응용생명화학회 2019 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.62 No.-

Potential use of living and non-living kefir grains (small, gelatinous white/yellow irregularly shaped masses consist of live bacteria and yeasts) on removal of reactive dye Remazol Navy RGB from aqueous solutions were investigated. Experiments were carried out under different process conditions in order to optimize and model the bioremoval processes. At all conditions the living kefir grains exhibited higher dye removal efficiencies than the non-living grains. In 180 min, 96.3% and 79.4% dye removal was obtained with living and non-leaving kefir grains respectively, at pH 2, 25 °C for 100 mg/L initial dye concentration by using 2.4 g/L kefir grain. Maximum adsorption capacities by living and inactivated kefir grains were obtained at 400 mg/L initial dye concentration as 134.59 and 56.92 mg/g respectively. Consecutive batch studies show that the living kefir grains could be reused over at least 5 cycles with high dye removal efficiency without any nutrition supplement. The biosorption kinetics both for living and non-living kefir grains were best described with pseudo-first-order kinetic model. On the other hand the biosorption equilibrium for living and non-living kefir grains were better defined by Temkin and Langmuir isotherm models respectively. Results suggest that the kefir grains could be used efficiently, eco-friendly and economically for removal of dyes from aqueous solutions.

Peak Discharge Prediction due to Embankment Dam Break by using Sensitivity Analysis based ANN

Ali Osman Pektas,Tarkan Erdik 대한토목학회 2014 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.18 No.6

Accurate prediction of peak discharges due to embankment dam failure is essential to identifying and reducing potential for lossof life and damage in the downstream floodplain. Because, when a dam fails the damage is certain, but the extent of this damagecannot be evaluated in advance. The loss of life and property damage can vary depending on flood area and population. In orderto cope with embankment dam breaching and to take necessary steps beforehand many researchers worked on parametric breachmodels based on Regression Analysis (RA) to estimate the peak outflow from a breached embankment dam since 1970s. RA is awidely-used approach that could provide acceptable results. Since, this approach bears restrictive assumptions, direct applicationof RA ignoring these assumptions might cause pitfalls and biased calculations. In this study, it is shown that previous worksgenerated by RA gives biased calculations and a new alternative approach, based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), issuggested in replacement of classical RA, which gives more accurate results according to both numerical error criteria andscientific background.

        Ali Osman, Kaya,Suleyman, Buyukberber,Metin, Ozkan,Necati, Alkis,Alper, Sevinc,Nuriye Yildirim, Ozdemir,Suleyman, Alici,Onur, Esbah,Veli, Berk,Celalettin, Camci,Arife, Ulas,Ugur, Coskun,Mustafa, Benek Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.2

Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of a gemcitabine plus docetaxel regimen as a second line therapy for patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) resistant to doxorubicin and ifosfamide-based therapy. Patients and Methods: Medical records of 64 patients with advanced STS who received gemcitabine plus docetaxel regimen as a second line treatment between May 2006 and June 2011 were examined. All patients had been previously treated with doxorubicin plus ifosfamide-based regimen at first line setting. Patients received gemcitabine 900 $mg/m^2$ on days one and eight intravenously over 90 minutes, followed by docetaxel 75 $mg/m^2$ on day eight intravenously over one hour. Cycles were repeated every 3 weeks. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 37/27 and the median age was 44 years (range; 19-67 years). Objective responses were observed in 13 (20.3 %) patients (2 CR, 11 PR) and stable disease in 21 (32.8 %). Total clinical benefit (CR+PR+SD) was observed in 34 (53.1 %). Median overall survival (OS) was 18 months (95% confidence interval (CI):12.1-23.9) and Median time to progression (TTP) was 4.8 months (95% CI: 3.6-6). A total of 243 cycles of chemotherapy were administered. The median number of cycle was 3 (range;1-11). The most common grade 3-4 hematologic toxicity was neutropenia (35.9 %). The most common nonhematologic toxicities consisted of nausea/vomiting (37.5 %), mucositis (32.8 %), peripheral neuropathy (29.7%), and fatigue (26 %). There was no toxicity-related death. Conclusion: The combination of gemcitabine plus docetaxel is an active and tolerable regimen as a second line therapy for patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma who have failed doxorubicin and ifosfamide-based therapy.

      • Inquiring Prescriptions Using Geographic Information System (GIS)

Osman, Asim Seedahmed Ali,Kalil, Eman Galaleldin Ahmed International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2021 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.21 No.12

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is considered to be one of the most important technologies provided by the Internet in our era. GIS enables institutions and individuals to plan and make decisions in many fields. GIS assists in accessing new and updated information on planning process. GIS also enables determining distances such as length, width, area on a map, and allows analyzing and processing a large amount of data for the search of geographical characteristics of locations. This paper explains the concept of dispensing prescription through the specific code of drug on an electronic system using GIS technology. The proposed methodology aims to inform patients of all the prescriptions dispensed and to help individuals inquiring about prescription at the nearest pharmacy through GIS technology. This proposed methodology is considered significant in some cases, as the patient does not know price, specifications and pharmacy location where the drug required is available, thus increasing the time and effort cost that is spent searching for the prescription.

Optimal Selection of Arm Inductance and Switching Modulation for Three-Phase Modular Multilevel Converters in Terms of DC Voltage Utilization, Harmonics and Efficiency

Ali Osman Arslan,Mehmet Kurtoglu,Fatih Eroglu,Ahmet Mete Vural 전력전자학회 2019 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.19 No.4

The arm inductance (AI) of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) affects both the fault and circulating current magnitudes. In addition, it has an impact on the inverter efficiency and harmonic content. In this study, the AI of a three-phase MMC isoptimized in a novel way in terms of DC voltage utilization, harmonics and efficiency. This MMC has 10 submodules (SM) perarm and the power circuit topology of the SM is a half-bridge. The optimum AI is adopted and verified in an MMC that has 100SMs per arm. Then the phase shift (PS) and phase disposition (PD) pulse width modulation (PWM) methods are investigated forbetter DC voltage utilization, efficiency and harmonics. It is found that similar performances are obtained for both modulationtechniques in terms of DC voltage utilization. However, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the PS-PWM is found to be0.02%, which is slightly lower than the THD of the PD-PWM at 0.16%. In efficiency calculations, the switching and conductionlosses for all of the semiconductor are considered separately and the minimum efficiency of the 100-SM based MMC is found tobe 99.62% for the PS-PWM and 99.64% for the PD-PWM with the optimal value of the AI. Simulation results are verified withan experimental prototype of a 6-SM based MMC.
