An Unusual Biatrial Cardiac Myxoma in a Young Patient

        Ali Azari,Leila Bigdelu,Zahra Moravvej,Soheila Chamanian 대한흉부외과학회 2015 Journal of Chest Surgery (J Chest Surg) Vol.48 No.1

This is a report of a biatrial cardiac myxoma in a young man with a 10-month history of exertional dyspnea andpalpitation. The echocardiogram revealed biatrial myxoma prolapsing through the mitral and tricuspid valves duringdiastole. All cardiac chambers were enlarged and dysfunctional. The electrocardiogram revealed a rapid ventricularresponse with atrial flutter rhythm. The masses were resected and diagnosed as myxoma by a histologicalexamination. The follow-up echocardiogram revealed significant improvement in ventricular function and reduction inthe cardiac chambers’ volume. There was no evidence of myxoma recurrence. The most probable cause of thepatient’s heart failure was considered to be tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy.

An Improved Technique for Pulmonary Endarterectomy

        Ali Azari,Zahra Moravvej,Sara Afshar,Leila Bigdelu 대한흉부외과학회 2014 Journal of Chest Surgery (J Chest Surg) Vol.47 No.3

We report a modified technique for pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) on a 67-year-old man with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) who presented with dyspnea. He was referred to our medical center for coronary artery bypass grafting. CTEPH had not been detected in his first visit to another medical center, but upon re-evaluation, the diagnosis was confirmed. PEA was performed with a modified method, which seems to be safe and suitable for the removal of clot and fibrotic materials. Iatrogenic dissection was performed with normal saline injection in the pulmonary artery, and then, the clot was removed completely. Although the technique may not be applicable for all cases, it can be used as an alternative to using an aspirating dissector and a pair of forceps.

        Monireh Mahmoodpour-Azari,Satar Rezaei,Nasim Badiee,Mohammad Hajizadeh,Ali Mohammadi,Ali Kazemi-Karyani,Shahin Soltani,Mehdi Khezeli 질병관리본부 2023 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.14 No.3

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak on the hospitalization rate, emergency department (ED) visits, and outpatient clinic visits in western Iran. Methods: We collected data on the monthly hospitalization rate, rate of patients referred to the ED, and rate of patients referred to outpatient clinics for a period of 40 months (23 months before and 17 months after the COVID-19 outbreak in Iran) from all 7 public hospitals in the city of Kermanshah. An interrupted time series analysis was conducted to examine the impact of COVID-19 on the outcome variables in this study. Results: A statistically significant decrease of 38.11 hospitalizations per 10,000 population (95% confidence interval [CI], 24.93–51.29) was observed in the first month of the COVID-19 outbreak. The corresponding reductions in ED visits and outpatient visits per 10,000 population were 191.65 (95% CI, 166.63–216.66) and 168.57 (95% CI, 126.41–210.73), respectively. After the initial reduction, significant monthly increases in the hospitalization rate (an increase of 1.81 per 10,000 population), ED visits (an increase of 2.16 per 10,000 population), and outpatient clinic visits (an increase of 5.77 per 10,000 population) were observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Our study showed that the utilization of outpatient and inpatient services in hospitals and clinics significantly declined after the COVID-19 outbreak, and use of these services did not return to pre-outbreak levels as of June 2021.

      • Literacy and Breast Cancer Prevention: a Population-Based Study from Iran

        Harirchi, Iraj,Azary, Saeedeh,Montazeri, Ali,Mousavi, Seyed Mohsen,Sedighi, Zahra,Keshtmand, Gelavizh,Zarinkolah, Zahra,Soltani, S.M. Amin Khalifeh Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.8

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide and the leading cause of death from cancer among women. Evidence suggests that early diagnosis and screening interventions might help to improve outcomes. This population-based study was conducted to determine breast cancer awareness and screening behavior among Iranian women and to examine its association with women's literacy. The study was carried out in two provinces, with 1,477,045 population, located in central and eastern part of Iran. Overall, 770 women were studied. Of these, 482 (62.7%) were literate and 287 (37.3%) were not. The results obtained from the data analysis indicated that there was a significant difference between literate and illiterate women. Further analysis of the data using logistic regression showed that literacy was an important contributing factor for breast cancer prevention behavior. The findings suggest that in order to improve women's health and breast cancer outcomes providing equal educational opportunities for women seems necessary.

The Relationship between Anger Expression and Its Indices and Oral Lichen Planus

        Masoumeh Mehdipour,Ali Taghavi Zenouz,Alireza Farnam,Rana Attaran,Sara Farhang,Maryam Safarnavadeh,Narges Gholizadeh,Saranaz Azari-Marhabi 전남대학교 의과학연구소 2016 전남의대학술지 Vol.52 No.2

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. Depression, stress and anxiety are psychological factors that their influence on the expressionof lichen planus by affecting the immune system’s function has been confirmed. There is a probable relationship between anger and OLP expression. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the association of “anger” and OLP. In this descriptivestudy 95 subjects were included in 3 groups. A: patients with oral lichen planus,B: positive control, C: negative control. Anger and its indices were assessed by theState-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 (STAXI-2) questionnaire, and pain wasmeasured via the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The collected data were analyzed statisticallyusing SPSS 18 software. The lichen planus and positive control groups borehigher total anger index (AX index) values compared with the negative control. Comparing anger expression-in (AXI) among the lichen planus and negative controlgroups revealed higher grades in lichen planus group. Evaluating the pain severity index(VAS) data and anger indices in lichen planus group, Spearman’s Rank CorrelationTest revealed a significant correlation between TAngR (reactional anger traits) andpain severity. The findings of this study indicated that there was a significant correlationbetween anger control and suppression of lichen planus development. On the otherhand, the patients with more severe pain mostly expressed their anger physically. Based on the findings, we can make the claim that anger suppression and its control-in(gathering tension) may play a role in the development of lichen planus as a knownpsychosomatic disorders.

Adsorption of p-Cresol on Al2O3 coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes: Response surface methodology and isotherm study

        Jalil Jaafari,Mohammad Ghanbari Ghozikali,Ali Azari,Mohammadbagher Delkhosh,Allah Bakhsh Javid,Ali Akbar Mohammadi,Shilpi Agarwal,Vinod Kumar Gupta,Mika Sillanpää,Alexey G. Tkachev,Alexander E. Burako 한국공업화학회 2018 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.57 No.-

The development and design of adsorbents with high adsorption performance is an effective method of removing p-Cresol from effluent for environmental protection. Therefore, an Al2O3 coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) composite for adsorption of p-Cresol from aqueous solution was synthesized. The p-Cresol concentration was determined by estimating the absorbance of the sample solution on a DR5000 UV/vis spectrophotometer. Box–Behanken design (BBD) was involved in the optimization of p-Cresol adsorption upon Al2O3 coated MWNTs adsorbent against the process parameters time, pH and adsorbent dose. The effects of these factors were studied in the ranges 5–40 min, 4–10, and 0.2–2 g L−1, respectively. The lack of fit obtained for this model was 0.357 which confirmed that the model is highly significant and the experiments are accurate and reliable. The results showed that adsorption isotherms fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model and Qmax was calculated to be 54.05 mg/g. Our results demonstrate that Al2O3 coated MWNTs has the potential to be used as an effective adsorbent for the rapid uptake of p-Cresol from aqueous solutions.

Application of mesoporous magnetic carbon composite for reactive dyes removal: Process optimization using response surface methodology

        Babak Kakavandi,Ahmad Jonidi Jafari,Roshanak Rezaei Kalantary,Hamed Gharibi,Anvar Asadi,Ali Azari,Ali Akbar Babaei,Afshin Takdastan 한국화학공학회 2016 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.33 No.10

Discharging the effluents of textile wastewaters into potable water resources can endanger the ecosystem, due to their reactivity, toxicity, and chemical stability. In this research, the application of powder activated carbon modified with magnetite nanoparticles (PAC-MNPs) as an adsorbent for removal of reactive dyes (Reactive black 5 (RB5) and reactive red 120 (RR120)) was studied in a batch system. The adsorption performance was evaluated as a function of temperature, contact time and different adsorbent and adsorbate concentrations. The levels of factors were statistically optimized using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) from the response surface methodology (RSM) to maximize the efficiency of the system. The adsorption process of both dyes was fit with the pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The identified optimum conditions of adsorption were 38.7 oC, 46.3 min, 0.8 g/L and 102mg/L for temperature, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial dyes concentration, respectively. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum sorption capacities of 175.4 and 172.4mg/g were obtained for RB5 and RR120, respectively. Thermodynamics studies indicated that the adsorption process of the reactive dyes was spontaneous, feasible, and endothermic. After five cycles, the adsorption efficiency was around 84 and 83% for RB5 and RR120, respectively. A high value of desorption was achieved, suggesting that the PAC-MNPs have a good potential in regeneration and reusability, and also can be effectively utilized in industrial applications. PAC-MNPs also show a good anti-interference potential for removal of reactive dyes in dye-industry wastewaters.
